U.S. Troops May Stay In Afghanistan Until 2024: Report

America and Afghanistan are close to signing a strategic pact which would allow thousands of United States troops to remain in the country until at least 2024, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Well, if we try to look at it from the bright side....

by 2024... the number one cause of death amongst the troops, rather than IED's, suicide or sniper fire will probably be .... old age...

Can we expect to read articles like: "It was reported that Pvt. Corp.Winst­­on E. Johnson, age 74, on his 24th tour to Afghanista­­n, deceased yesterday after falling from his rollator ..." ?

This future perspectiv­­e also made me wonder if Thomas Friedman will still be writing articles in the NY Times by then where he writes that "the next six months will be crucial" ...

Like elections matter. Had an election in 2000 - the loser of which was appointed President by the SCOTUS. Had an election in 2008, the winner of which, going against his promises, stayed the course in Iraq, escalated the war in Afghanistan, and started a new one in Libya. And who will we have running in 2012? A warring democrat, a warring republican or a third party candidate with no chance of winning. Big whoop!

US politicians will pay a very high price at the polls if they don't get us out of Afghanistan. There's no excuse for continued military involvement in the Middle East and elsewhere when everything is crumbling here at home. We can no longer afford, either morally or financially, to police the world.
