Orangutan Overload (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 08/22/11 07:36 PM ET   Updated: 10/22/11 06:12 AM ET

Orangutans have been making quite a splash in news this summer.

Most recently, people watched in awe as an orangutan at Japan's Tama Zoo cooled off in a shockingly human manner, wiping his face with a wet towel.

In June, National Geographic captured on film an orangutan named Suryia befriending a hound dog named Roscoe.

Unfortunately, orangutans face many threats. Palm oil plantations have recently emerged as a cash crop for fuel and food, but production can not only destroy rain forests but also may endanger the orangutan population. Earlier this year, two Girl Scouts raised awareness about the plight of the orangutan, challenging the makers of their Girl Scout cookies to remove palm oil from the ingredients.

Michelle Desilets, executive director of the Orangutan Land Trust, told Mongabay.com, "We have found orangutans beaten to death with wooden planks and iron bars, butchered by machetes, beaten unconscious and buried alive, and doused with petrol and set alight."

According to National Geographic, orangutans are also threatened by deforestation and hunting.

"..only remain in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra islands of Indonesia..."

Borneo is an island that three countries occupy. Malaysia, Indonesia Brunei. Get your facts right!

Last week Orangutan Outreach, I think it was, had a Fiver Friday -- for $5 you could save 2.5 acres of rainforest for 20 years! I spent $10. What a bargain!

Read your product labels! Stop using products that contain non-sustainable palm oil -- and hold corporations that use it accountable. These creatures are amazing!

After reading all the posts on this article I can say with the exception of a few untershtuppers (yiddish for troublemakers) most of the comments have been both interesting and educational. When I look into the eyes of any of the Great Apes I see so much intelligence...how can anyone look at these awesome animals and not see the eyes of a sentinent creature. Just because our tongues do not speak the same language................The saddest part of all of this is that it is very difficult to teach any form of conservationism to people who are starving....it is almost impossible to stay the hand of a human competing with another species for food....I wish there was a solution but as one of the commentators said GREED RULES ALL..........I remain open and hoping.............

From what I've read, the problem is not starving humans competing for scraps of food with the orangutans. It's evil, greedy corporations (like Eka Tjipta Widjaja and his company, Asia Pulp and Paper) who are clearcutting rainforest for palm oil plantations (not to mention well-intentioned but misguided biofuel efforts in Europe). That and the sheer corruption at the highest (and lowest) levels of Indonesia's government that allows the logging to occur despite the (phony?) government efforts to conserve what's left of the rainforest.

I know this is a bit late in replying...I agree with you...as far as orangutans are concerned greed is absolutely what is destroying them. I was talking about all the great apes...and specifically the African Apes.Jungle "meat" and the problems with subsistenance farming and poaching/ as well as warfare and starvation. Chimpanzees,Gorillas and Bonobos as well as the smaller monkeys are all considered "meat"...It would be like eating a cousin...

I traveled to Borneo several years ago and saw first-hand the effort to save the orangutan. It requires a great deal of time and money. I recently purchased an acre of rainforest to help protect orangutan habitat. Perhaps some of you can help.
