New Technologies Help Border Patrol And Border Crossers, Respectively

The battle between border crosser and border patrol just got a little nerdier.

While Homeland Security estimates that nearly four million Mexican migrants were apprehended on the U.S.–Mexico border between 2005 and 2009, the Pew Hispanic Center estimates about 1.5 million Mexican citizens successfully migrated to the U.S. in the same period. In the past few years, however, two opposing "crowd-sourcing" technologies have brought the clash between border crosser and border patrol into the digital age.

Border patrol agents in Texas, overwhelmed by the number of migrants attempting to cross their expansive border, established a program in 2008 called BlueServo.net to "crowd-source" their challenge. The website describes itself as "an innovative real-time surveillance program designed to empower the public to proactively participate in fighting border crime." Essentially, volunteers around the world sit at their computers watching surveillance cameras set up across the Texas-Mexico border. When the "Virtual Texas Deputies" detect movement on one of these cameras, they report the encounter; when enough reports coincide, border patrol agents are deployed to the location. On their Facebook page, users leave comments such as "on camera 4 ... four to five people ran from left to right" or "swimmers on cam 13 now" to alert the sheriffs to border crossers.

CNN reported in 2009 that user Rob Abernethy, a 42-year-old factory worker from Lincolnton, North Carolina, watches BlueServo cameras for an average of half an hour every day because "he feels like he's part of an altruistic group of volunteers.” CNN also reported that Abernethy saw it as "no worse than any other form of quick entertainment."

"It's no different than watching 'Everybody Loves Raymond' reruns ... It's just something to do," Abernethy said in the interview.

Although Governor Rick Perry provided $2 million in Criminal Justice grant funds to support the initiative, the El Paso Times reported that the project largely failed to meet its projected goal of 1,200 BlueServo-related arrests in the first year. In the first six months, only three arrests were made, according to the paper.

On the other side of the equation, a new tool to assist undocumented migrant workers safely over the border into the United States is being developed by Ricardo Dominguez, activist/hacker from the University of California in San Diego. The free GPS application is called the "Transborder Immigrant Tool" and was wrapping up its testing in 2009. In an interview with Vice Magazine in November of 2009, Dominguez described how his application works.

“We looked at the Motorola i455 cell phone, which is under $30, available even cheaper on eBay, and includes a free GPS applet. We were able to crack it and create a simple compass-like navigation system. We were also able to add other information, like where to find water left by the Border Angels, where to find Quaker help centers that will wrap your feet, how far you are from the highway -- things to make the application really benefit individuals who are crossing the border,” he said.

To date, there have been no reports of border crossers using the program successfully. But, then again, maybe that's the point.

The Transborder Immigrant Tool sounds interesting, I wonder how many human smugglers and sex traffickers have used it to aid their crimes.

These people are going to cross the border whether we like it or not. This technology at least assists them so they don’t lose their lives in the process.

It amazes me how many people of european descent have a distaste for mexicans who come to this country seeking a better life, when your families did the same thing, when you all invaded this continent. How would you all like it, if Mexico was the one who invaded Europe and did to you, what this government did to the natives of this continent, and branded you as being illegal. I would suggest you start by being respectfull to all those who have the same dreams, we all have

You should see what they are doing to California. I could name many Cities for you to go and visit and see the 3rd world mentality. Mexicans throwing motor in dumpsters along with other things. It;s funny how the Democrats want their vote yet the tree huggers would have a fit if they knew just how much disrespect these people have for the earth!

Ignorance is bliss!

Unbelievable, I'm watching a documentary on the Current TV channel called "This (Illegal) American Life" about illegals in America. The illegals keep talking about how happy they are to sneak across the border and live here illegally. Most send the money they make back to Mexico so I guess they are stimulating Mexico's economy and not that of the country where they (illegally) live.

It's a sad day when so many people sneak into our country with impunity. Then a president who doesn't believe in enforcing the law? I had such high hopes when I voted for Obama. Enforce the law or just let anyone who wants stream across our border, make a choice. And why isn't the government arresting this guy who developed the program to help people cross the border illegally? He's aiding law breakers.

You can shop at Sears, Walmart, JC penny, Home Depot, Target, Costco, or eat at, Mcdonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and many other American owned restaurants, stores and other shops in Mexico.

Even stores owned by Mexicans are full of American products.

Mexico is the U.S.’s second largest trading partner after Canada, and Mexico-U.S.trade reached $232 billion in 2002. Mexico-US trade has increased by over 225 percent since the North American Free Trade Agreement of 1994. U.S. exports to Mexico total $62.5 billion (year to date, while imports were $90.2 billion(Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, International Trade Administration)

Oh yeah, most of those remittances to Mexico are being spent on American products.

The government isn't arresting the guy who developed the program that most cell phones with a GPS system already have because most cell phones with a GPS system already have it.

I think we should get someone like sheriff Joe Arpaio to head up a task force on keeping our border safe. He seems to be doing a decent job in Phoenix rounding the illegals up.

"This website just encourages profiling"

Wow, the go to excuse for the ignorant even when it doesn't fit.  How exactly is it profiling if I report a van dragging along the ground driving through a small dirt road from Mexico to the US?  I mean really, let it rest.  Everything and anything used to deport more illegals will be deemed profiling by those who wish to harbor illegal immigrants and shower them with the rights and privileges of the tax paying American citizen.

Of course it's racial profiling.
No one knows how many white illegal aliens enter this country, and no one cares.

Less than 1% of the 4,000-mile U.S.-Canada border is adequately secured by the U.S., according to a government audit that attributes the problem to rivalries and lack of coordination among various law enforcement agencies. As a result, the Border Patrol maintains an “acceptable level of control” over only 32 miles of the Canadian border stretching from Washington State to Maine.

U.S. taxpayers doled out nearly $3 billion in 2010 to guard the Canadian border and federal agents made around 6,000 arrests and confiscated 40,000 pounds of narcotics but the area remains a national security threat. That’s because federal agents don’t have the ability to detect illegal activity across most of the area, according to the GAO probe. As a result, “few northern border miles” reached an “acceptable level of security” in 2010.

In December a separate GAO report focusing on federal borderlands in the north and south revealed that a rural and dangerous portion along Canada is practically ignored by the U.S. As a result, the stretch—which runs from Washington State to Montana—is rife with drug smuggling and potential terrorism and gang threats. The area is also considered an important entry point for aircraft that smuggle drugs from Canada.

Wow I had no idea you could make out a persons physical characteristics from those little blobs?

People have no idea who these folks are who are crossing illegally so how can any claim you made have ANY merit? Don't even go there with the canadian side. People could look at cameras for weeks and never see a soul cross. There have to be at least 1,000 illegal crossings from mexico to every one from canada.

I would of course also welcome tighter standards on the canadian border and I have just the method to do it - if you are not a hypocrite about the issue then you should agree with me on this method:
1. Mandate national e-verify.
2. Stop anchors by either forcing the SCOTUS to rule on the use of the 14th and if upheld mandate a ten year prison sentence for any illegal giving birth here.
3. Constitutional amendment for no more amnesty of any kind ever again.
4. Lifetime ban on all travel here for any reason if caught here illegally.
5. Ten year prison term for the second offense if caught here.
6. Stop all daisy chaining but minor kids and spouses.

If we did this the mexican border would have very few crossings so thousands of BP agents could go north to protect that side.

Done and done!

re: "While Homeland Security estimates that nearly four million Mexican migrants were apprehended on the U.S.–Mexico border between 2005 and 2009, the Pew Hispanic Center estimates about 1.5 million Mexican citizens successfully migrated to the U.S."

- That is why the Pew Hispanic Center cannot be trusted. ICE has always estimated that between 3 to 4 illegals enter the US illegally for every one that is caught. Therefore, if nearly four million were apprehended, then nearly 3 to 4 times that many illegally invaded the US.

That's 9 to 12 million folks, in four years.

That is why I contend the false estimate of 12 million illegals in the US is completely wrong. More like well over 30 million illegal invaders.

The numbers that are thrown around are pretty funny aren't they.

They claim about 10% of all SS reciepts are from illegals yet they are low income and at 12 million (7-8 million workers) only about 5% of the workforce. How can that pen out?

They claim they are more law abiding then citizens yet they can account for up to 25-30% of prison inmates, yet are supposedly only 3% of the population.

They claim illegal numbers at 12 million now for at least a decade. We are supposed to believe that no more came here then left during that period.

quote:
The U.S.-Canada border remains highly vulnerable to illegal activity and terrorist foot traffic, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.
The report, based in part on an assessment from the Border Patrol, said most of the United States' nearly 4,000 miles of northern border remained vulnerable and only 32 miles -- or less than 1 percent of the total border -- was adequately secure in fiscal 2010

According to GAO, Homeland Security believes the risk of terrorist activity across the northern border is higher than the southern border because there are active Islamist extremist groups in Canada that are not in Mexico. The northern border is much longer than the U.S.-Mexico border and has fewer law enforcement officers, making nefarious activity more likely, the report noted.

Terrorist crossings to and from Canada aren't the only problem, according to GAO and Homeland Security. The U.S.-Canada border also has become a well-traveled route for other illicit trade, including drug smuggling and human trafficking.

It's the other way around, the U.S. should get the HeII out of Mexico and stop stealing their wealth.

The FBI and DEA have offices in several Mexican cities. Spokespeople for de facto president Calderón admitted that U.S. agents were active in Ciudad Juárez. U.S. involvement in Mexico is Blackwater. Exposed for crimes against humanity in Iraq, it has changed its name to Xe Services. It came to “help” Calderón in his supposed war against the narcotraffic.

in two years, 4,700 people died violently, Most victims have been civilians executed by paramilitary groups or military people dressed in black or wearing ski masks.

Five transnational corporations control U.S. mass media for imperialist interests and say nothing or spread lies about the people’s uprisings in Mexico and the Mexican immigrants in the United States. This is because the U.S. government is focusing its sights on the rising Mexican opposition in order to gain greater control over Mexican oil, minerals, uranium, water, biodiversity, and immigrant labor. And it wants to keep immigrant labor cheap, and so aligns with the Mexican business elite and its government. The elite loves Uncle Sam like kids love Santa Claus. The Council of big capitalists is crying for more aid in fighting the cartels, and aid is pouring in. It doesen't come in a reindeer sleigh, but as Blackhawk helicopter gunships that spit fire and death.
