The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/23/2011 10:41 am EDT   Updated: 10/24/2011 5:12 am EDT

Summer is coming to an end and that means students across the country are prepping for the trek back to school.

Pencils, notebooks, and binders are the basic necessities for any pupil, but students shouldn't forget to gear-up with this year's latest tech as well. From note-taking apps and noise-canceling headphones to soda-powered alarm clocks and digital textbooks, we've compiled a wide-ranging list of high-tech school supplies for students to help them ease the stress of a busy schedule, study for exams, write papers, take notes in class, and much more. The items in this guide are meant to be practical, affordable, and fun.

Whether you're in college, high school, middle school or simply a caring parent, these tech accessories will help any student achieve high-marks in class--and unwind when the cramming is over.

iPads, robot hoovers, expensive coffee machines... American students have too much money if these are the sort of things they are buying.

So, dolt, by your writing you expect students - or anyone else other than a tech writer - to run out and buy 23 "must have" items?

You writers should quit using the phrase "must have." Ever heard of the word "recommended"?

This trend of wanting to sound very dramatic demonstrates shallowness.

Some of these things are cool "extras", but they're not really necessities for budget-strapped college students. Plus, it's just more junk to pack up, move, break and lose.

I was a student up until last year. Let's take it from the top.

1. Any headphones will do. Are libraries noisy to the point that you need noise canceling headphones?
2. People download music anyway.
3. How often do college students clean their bathrooms?
4. How's about you just keep track of your laptop? And lock it up when not using it?
5. Netflix counts as a gadget now?
6. External hard drive. One time buy. Stores everything you have or need.
7. Have / need no iPhone.
8. If you like coffee, get a french press. $20. Makes enough coffee for a travel mug.
9. Having your whatever take notes FOR you will just cause you to space out all the more. Notes by themselves aren't overly beneficial.
10. Camera. Meh.
11. You know what else has an alarm clock in it? Your cell phone. That thing you charge every day anyway.
12. Laptop locks are smart, I'll give you that.
13. Yes, because we're all walking around 4-5 hours a day.
14. You know what else encases your laptop? A backpack.
15. You can download textbooks, too.
16. Sure, why not. They give flash drives away with freshmen orientation crap, though.

On 14, having a laptop sleeve is rather helpful. I made the mistake of just putting my laptop in my backpack during a five week summer program, and it was seriously banged up by the end of it. However, the ones shown in the slide are considerably more fancy than anything anyone would need.

In one article, this site decries the ever increasing comsumerism that has engulfed America -
then in the next article, they list out the must have school items for kids.

Yeah, that makes sense -

Somehow half my post was chopped. But yeah, that's my question. The first item is a $300 pair of frickin headphones. That's a month's rent for a student sharing an apartment. It's like a lesson plan on how to become an American indebted to the banks at 18+% interest rates.

I actually have this on my pc. While you're right about many devices having webcams, the clarity (lack of pixillation) on this one is excellent.
