The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/23/11 09:47 PM ET   Updated: 10/24/11 06:12 AM ET

News about the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Washington, D.C. on Tuesday and was felt in cities throughout the East coast exploded online, spreading rapidly via social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

Phrases and hashtags related to the earthquake, such as "5.8" and "#earthquake" quickly dominated Twitter's trending topics list.

Mashable notes, "Tweets began pouring in from D.C. nearly 30 seconds before we felt the quake at our headquarters in New York City and well before any reports about the quake emerged from the media." As HuffPostLA reports, many West coast users also took to Twitter to tease their East coast counterparts. "Really all this excitement over a 5.8 quake??? Come on East Coast, we have those for breakfast out here!!!!" wrote one user.

We've compiled some key statistics that illustrate the spike in social media usage immediately following the earthquake. Visit our live blog for more information on the earthquake.

And, we hit about 5,500 Tweets per second (TPS). For context, this TPS is more than Osama Bin Laden\'s death & on par w/ the Japanese quake.

DC is probably 70 miles away Short Pump town center is only 20 or so so call it the Short Pump town center earthquake, besides its a much newer nicer shopping center than old raggedy Tysons.

Holy moly, those are the worst "must-see" stats ever. I thought I might see stats on comparisons between it and other earthquakes, or maybe historical data from other east-coast earthquakes. Instead, I see it generated 5.5k tweets per second... is there a social media richter scale?

We had a 3.9er at 11:39 pm here in the bay area last night. I was lying in bed reading and my husband had just closed the sliding patio door in the bedroom. I thought he had then run into the dresser on his way to the bathroom, but then the bed shook and I realized it was a quake. The epi was about four miles away.

Why are they calling this the "DC Earthquake" when it's actually the Mineral, VA earthquake? Just saying?

It's more dramatic when DC folks are the center of attention.

I think it's more dramatic when you can name familiar monuments and a known city. Does anyone know anything about Mineral, VA and you know society is suffering from ADD so no one would pay attention after 5 minutes. It's sad but true.
