Earthquake 2011: 13 Ways Our Days Were Marginally Impacted

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/23/11 05:15 PM ET   Updated: 10/24/11 06:12 AM ET

In case you've been stuck in an Internet-less vortex and haven't heard yet, New York City felt the reverberations of an earthquake that originated in Virginia this afternoon.

The quake was only a 5.9 magnitude, so side effects have been minimal thus far, but that doesn't mean there was no impact at all. Take our offices for instance. We were all momentarily distracted by the tremors -- those of us who felt them, anyway -- and we're still trying to get back into our work groove.

If you don't believe us just check out the evidence below. Last one to Tweet something with a Will Smith tie-in's a rotten egg!

Northern NJ was one of the top five super sized site to the nuclear spent fuel dump. 10,000 year underground holding tank solid crack free and no earthquakes in recorded memory. Geologist went back a few thousands years earlier and found evidence to the contrary. And the super still in search of a home is at least not in nj. The earthquake free zone. Promise. Thank goodness.

There's nothing wrong with being freaked out by an earthquake. I've experienced a few here in Seattle, and they freak me out for weeks afterward. What's funny to the rest of us is the way this relatively mild earthquake was all over the national news. If we needed any proof that there's a New York/D.C. provincialism in the national media that the rest of us rely on, we certainly got it.

I have to say this a was learning experience for me since this is my 1st time I experience a earthquake shock. By residing in the DMV area, I would have never believed or accept anyone telling me our area is prone for earthquake. Once the tremors came through the Montgomery Cty,MD area at 2:00pm, that 20 seconds was a memorable moment. After the shock went by, the
news media deliberately broke the news asap about the quake going through the east coast.

I think the government agencies on the east coast & down south might have to rearranged their
disaster plan for the areas that were effected by this earthquake. Reality set end, so federal & state emergency plan have to really change their priorities in order to be prepared for future shocks or tremors that may occur.

Earthquakes are like sex. 14 seconds of shaking followed by 3 straight hours of talking about it.

I wish! I was laid off two days ago and my husband was fired!:) Tell me where to send it and you've got yourself a deal.

I would have personally blamed the earthquake on the planking phenomena and Obama:)

Sooner than later we will get the big one, I just wish we could predict where it will happen. When I lived in San Francisco I was in N.Y. when the big one hit. I was on a cruse when the North Ridge quake hit L.A. I guess I have been lucky, it must be a terrifying ordeal.

you should sell yourself to private industry as an "Earthquake Prevention System". I know during the boom they would have bought it, but I don't know in these "lean" times whether corporate can be as frivolous as they once were about paying money for nothing.

I am only glad that this earthquake happened because every time I turned to a news channel, i had to look at the same building in Tripoli with a cloud of smoke coming from it in the background. It was definitly a change of pace.
