Earthquake Felt During Indians-Mariners Game

Earthquake Indians Game

By TOM WITHERS   08/23/11 03:30 PM ET   AP

CLEVELAND -- Shock waves from an earthquake on the East Coast made the press box sway slightly and sent some fans toward the exits during the first game of a doubleheader between the Indians and Seattle Mariners.

As the Mariners were batting in the fourth inning Tuesday, the press box high above home plate and the third-base line moved left and right and continued for nearly 30 seconds. Fans sitting in the upper deck at Progressive Field noticed the unusual movement, and weren't sure what was happening.

"It went on for at least a minute," said Betsy Hammond, who was attending the game with her husband, Tim, and their three children. "We were looking around and someone stood up and yelled, 'Is that an earthquake?' Then someone who works here came over and said they heard it on the radio."

Play was not interrupted on the field. The Indians reported no structural damage to the 43,000-seat ballpark.

The Hammonds were celebrating their son Liam's 10-year-old birthday with his first game – one he'll never forget.

"My first thought was, 'That's weird, I can't move this seat,'" Tim Hammond said. "I thought it was the wind. I know the stadium is made to move, but I didn't know what was moving it. I was thinking maybe they blew something up on that movie set. A lot of people got up and were like 'We're out of here.'"

Filming for "The Avengers" is taking place on East 9th Street near the ballpark.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington and was felt as far north as Rhode Island and New York City.

"The odd thing was that it went on for a long time," Betsy Hammond said. "Then, the longer it went on, the more I wondered what was happening."

Progressive is good; regressive, not so much.

No place else to put this. davidortiz was the last 'outed' major leagur with the PED use. There are supposed to be a hundred or so more. Who are they? I buy tickets. I should be able to know. What's the latest on poohholts ad HGH? Where is his trainer, you know, his 'best friend'? Why are all these things covered up? It is not a case of innocent until proven guilty; with public figures, it is definitely the other way around.

This stadium is built below ground. You can actually see it as the left field wall starts below ground level and rises to the street and the basketball complex, (used to be called Gund Arena), located behind the ball park. I toured this stadium soon after it opened, from the dugouts to the locker-rooms, the field, press boxes and luxury suites. I'll bet those folks felt one heck of a rumbling, being that the caissons for the park are buried a mile below.

I live in Vegas now - 15 years. We occasionally, (2 - 3 times a year), get rolled by some of California's quakes. And sometimes we get our own! Nothing to worry about, unless, of course, you're staying on the top floor of one of our casinos.....

Oh it was nothing compared to California earthquakes! NJ has not had a major quake..Neither has the east coast. Don't worry, we're fine.
04:51 PM on 08/23/2011
I really hope and pray that no-one was injured. Last i checked the news said that no injuries had been reported, so i hope it stays that way. We even had people in Augusta, Georgia saying they felt 'movement'. They even evacuated parts of ASU. I understand that some of you Californians are use to this sort of thing (I have a sister that lives in Cali) but some States are not equipped/ready for earthquakes. When you're not prepared, it can be horrific and devastating. With earthquakes happening in places out of the norm and a huge hurricane coming our way- i don't think things should be taken too lightly. I pray that everyone makes it through all of this unharmed.

I live in Northern NJ, and yes we felt a tremor and it freaked us out. It is nothing and it gets blown up because we never have them. Its like when it rains in california. West coast people take it easy on us, it's not a common accurance for us. Glad it never got to be more than a shake.
07:45 PM on 08/23/2011
@C M C. Don't believe that song. It DOES rain in So Cal. Good thing it was just a tremor, though. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

NOT AT ALL FUNNY!! IF YOU'RE NOT SEEING A PATTERN OF "UNUSUAL EARTHQUAKES" HAPPENING IN PLACES WHERE THEY'VE NEVER HAD THEM BEFORE, YOU'RE MAKING LIGHT OUT OF SOMETHING YOU SHOULDN'T. We in California are expecting "The Big One" any time..we're WAY past due. I'm not the "Little Red Hen" running around screaming "The Sky Is Falling", but let's face it...weather is getting harsher. tsunamis, and various other "Warning Signs"...Earth is trying to warn us that it's NOT happy and is fed up with what we've done to it...Not to mention the religious beliefs and prophecies coming true. Your snide comment was very inappropriate!
04:28 PM on 08/23/2011
His comment wasn't that big of a deal. No one was injured, no major problems, RELAX!!
B.T.W., these types of weather occurrences have been happening forever! It is the natural cycle of the Earth!

Well, it's not nothing. I was in Kmart during the quake and ceiling tiles fell from the ceiling and stuff falling off shelves. Pretty disturbing. Over here on the east we always wish you all the best when quakes hit...

Wishing that all our neighbors on the east coast are safe .
04:25 PM on 08/23/2011
That may be true, and being a native Californian, I'm used to it happening and expecting "The Big One." What's NOT funny is that they're happening in states and other countries where they've never occurred before. Add a tsunami and recent other "Natural disasters", and we may want to stop making light of things that aren't funny.

It was pretty cool. I live just north of New Haven, CT. and my house was swaying side to side. It lasted 15-30 seconds. It appears that there were no injuries anywhere as reported by the news.

My kids are there right now and, when it hit, they immediately called me and asked "umm - did we just have an earthquake?" THEN the announcer came on the PA and told everyone not to panic, that there was a "slight" tremor.

The New Madrid fault if and when it erupts is going to be brutal for Memphis and St. Louis.
