People this east coast quake was GOD way of getting you all attention, in a different way. A very unusual earthquake at best. The magnitude of it is mind blowing, from Georgia to Canada. What awesome power! I warned you that our sinful lifestyle will cause GOD to punish us or at least strike fear into our heart. And this quake was a wakeup call from Him to us. He is still reeling mad at New York for approving gay rights and same sex marriage. Remember, He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah along with three other cities because of homosexuality and other sins. He also made sure that our nation Capitol felt His wrath all the way to the golf course, huh. I also told you all, that He would respond to it in due time and He has. People when I warn you not to go against GOD wishes (words the BIBLE) and you ignore them, expect Him to manifest His anger and wrath toward you. You will reap what you sow. Now here come a Hurricane for the East coast, after that, what's next, only time and your sins will tell. People, you better start fearing GOD before it gets to late. Don't forget about Japan!

We felt it over in Bern, Switzerland. Slight tremor, nothing too harsh.

Well, shoot! Didn't feel anything 3,000 miles away here.

Never any fun up here 'less there's a bear or cougar attack.

S&P downgrades the US. Instead of taking this shot across the bow as a reason to begin cutting back government spending, Obama goes on the attack against those who DARE to tell the truth. As a result of this government attack on S&P, the S&P CEO is fired.

The next day, Washington is shaken with a force never before recorded by our scientists.

Concidence? I think not.

I knew someone would blame President Obama for the earthquake. Wow totally unbelievable.

He just did it to drum up support for infrastructure spending.

Sadly, the GOTP response was : "Why should spend money on things God will just destroy?"

This was a Messge from God, to the hypocrirical Evangelical conservative Tea Party-ers and southern Republicans. Stop the hating, and work together, with ALL of God's children.
You-all are NOT the only chosen ones.

Yes, stop hating Tea Party members. God doesn't like hypocrites.

I didn't see anywhere in that comment where he said he hated Tea Party members.

I was in the Whole Foods on Duke Street when the store began to shake. No one could tell what was happening. Items fell off the shelves, and glass bottles in the display cases rattled the entire time. I think a lot of us remembered the noise and shaking in Alexandria when the plane hit the Pentagon on 9/11.

The Earthquake was felt in Vanceburg, KY for a few seconds...nothing too major...we thought the washing machine might be shaking the house...but it was a little more intense and went on for about 30 or 40 seconds. Crazy!

We felt it here in Williampsort, PA. About 45 seconds of shaking and rattling, but nothing serious. My fiance thought someone had driven into their buidling at work and I didn't know what the heck was going on.

My first thought, I thought maybe my washing machine in the basement had REALLY become unbalanced.

Second thought was that it was an earthquake and it wasdue to all the new fracking going on up here, but I guess that wasn't the case.

We felt it in Wilkes Barre.

We felt it at work in Vaughan (north of Toronto). It was a weird feeling. I thought I was just dizzy. I can't imagine how it felt in Virginia and other parts of the States that felt it :S

Were camping in Geneva on the Lake Ohio and it rocked our 5th wheel pretty good! Didn't know what was going on until they mentioned it on TV. Crazy!

I made a basic map that shows the original earthquake in context with where the nearby nuclear power plants are, and some of the problems they had with the shutdown of the reactors: http://rhiza.com/2011/08/24/va-quake/

Interesting to see them on the same map. There's another reactor near Raleigh, NC (Shearon-Harris).

Reporting from Reno, Nevada... we did not, I repeat we DID NOT feel anything!!! Glad everyone's ok over there, quite the rare event for you east coasters. The last "Big One" in VA (also a 5.8) was in 1897...
