777 New York City Schools Workers Will Lose Jobs In Biggest Layoff Under Mayor

School Layoffs

First Posted: 08/24/11 10:13 AM ET Updated: 10/24/11 06:12 AM ET

The New York Times:

Nearly 780 employees of the New York City Education Department will lose their jobs by October, in the largest layoff at a single agency since Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg took office in 2002.

The layoffs are a direct consequence of budget cuts to schools, which have occurred in each of the last four years, forcing principals to make tough decisions about what and whom to do without.

They should end sending welfare checks to enemy nations instead of killing our nation and children's futures. Israel would be a good place to start.

Financial Plan Summary :

Both Bloomberg and Cuomo have painted themselves into corners by making promises not to raise taxes but also having to deal with huge revenue gaps. Without increasing incoming funds the only option is to reduce costs, hence the lay offs.

Considering how Bloomberg has expanded NYC government since his arrival including appointing large numbers of commissioners (most of whom will receive NYC pensions regardless of how long or short they serve), one would think the fat cutting could start there.

That Quinn woman is in full campaign mode and wants Bloomberg's endorsement badly. So don't look to her for any action on this front, nor assisting in anything that might tick off her mentor.

Finally there is the on going trend of declining white middle class and above enrollment in NYC public schools, especially from middle school and above. This is having and will continue to affect the school system.

Step up the the plate Bloomberg and get rid of some of these Blood Sucking Leaches!

This should be an easy starting point!

Lots of people in lots of occupations are unemployed right now...to the tune of 9+%. Percentages in this article are 5-6% of the current staff. ARRA money artificially papered over budget problems for 2 yrs...now its over. Feel bad for anyone laid off....but that's what is happening to a lot of people right now. Phildelphia school chief got $905K to leave? thats out of whack.

So how does it help the situation to make more unemployed? That's absurd. If the rich paid their fair share of texes, we wouldn't have to do this. I bet you think it wouldn't be a good idea to lay off police and fire but those involved in schools- hey, ok. We are cutting our own throats
06:09 PM on 08/25/2011
Police or fire, people can get laid off....and it a shame when they do---but no worse if its a teacher or a cop or a salesperson...no one is owed a job for life.....we are all subject to circumstances

I don't know of fire/cops getting pink slips, and I've always wondered why. Teachers fall under the same public umbrella in many ways. We hear teachers constantly in the news about layoffs, etc. But cops/fire? I've heard very little. Especially fire, who in my area make near or above six figures.

Back in the 80's I attended an educational conference called "A Nation at Risk". There were Ministers of Education from several countries and the ONE THING they all said was that when there is a financial crisis the LAST thing they touch is education. And we wonder why our children are so far behind children in other progressive countries. Try cutting some of those six figure salaries of the those figure-heads who sit in their ivory towers and make mandates. I've seen first hand where district administrators do nothing but "write memos to the previous memos" and take 2 hour lunch breaks at a restaurant where they can have a martini. The money saved could help save teacher jobs.

Imagine if liberal get their way with legalizing all the illegal in the USA. The illegal then will take over the school financial aid. If there is protest all across the state of new york because of downsizing in financial aid wait until the illegal get a piece of the pie.
03:22 PM on 08/24/2011
Liberal this is what you get for maintaining your pep project ENTILTEMENTS PROGRAMS. Because Maria from Mexico here illegally with 10 kids can rake up up to 2200 Dollar and a free aparment with a FREE home attendant and free healtcare. The Govt cant take from my pocket what I dont have anymore that is why all the jobs cut. The city of New York rather take American jobs than to tell Maria to go back to her country.

Wall St. & Banks & Auto Industry was to big to FAIL---------But it's ok if our educational institution Fails, no bail our for them------Pretty close to being done w/failing the middle class/time to hit the eductional institutions! What next? Teahers, firemen, taxi drivers, cashiers all must pay MORE of their share. Didn't ya hear Rep. Sessions? They just don't pay enough in tax's!

This is nothing new guys. Expect more of this. This is what happens when our politicians are up for sale to the highest bidder. They have been systematically hollowing out this country by deregulating banking, deregulating the stock market, and by creating laws that make it legal for US companies to bring in goods from foreign lands tax free (NAFTA). One would think if a country spends 6-7 trillion bailing out the banks that it helped all those individuals who were about to lose their homes. Wrong it helped all those banks to open up more branches. I wonder how much money passed through our politician's hands for the banks to get a huge check without any strings attached. Basically they were given our money to do what they wanted to do with it. Nice! Our politicians are greedy. They forget they work for us. I guess we will have to remind all of them one day.

Where do you think the money is coming from? Since the coffer is empty as is spent in all entitlements programs.

Typical to blame the unions! Why are we still giving the BUSH tax cuts? Why are we still at how many wars not paid for? Why are we allowing austerity when the real abuses lay somewhere between the Petagon, big banks and large corporate entitlements. How about that SECRET 9 TRILLION the Feds tried hard to keep quiet? How about the measly settlements the government is working on for lost home owners by abusive and cheating banks?

Its just EASIER to blame the unions and make the working people pay our way out of the deficit and spending issues. Keep blaming unions until we have wages at the level of Asia with no future of aging issues.

More lobbyists in DC will certainly take care of what public education is left in this country.

Why not just cut all the free unentitled benefits that are being given to ILLEGAL ALIENS living in the city??? It would be MORE than enough to fix the budget!
01:28 PM on 08/24/2011
If it isn't Obama's fault then it's the illegal aliens. Lets try looking for a solution.
03:13 PM on 08/24/2011

I was in the grocery store the other day and ran into an old friend I had not seen in 20 years. She was a teacher and had just retired. Her first comment to me was, "After teaching for 30 years, I now know that the only job qualification I have is yelling at people." Teachers are a great asset but their jobs should not include guaranteed lifetime employment contracts.
