Katie Holmes On 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Daughter, Relationship (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/24/11 11:51 AM ET Updated: 10/24/11 06:12 AM ET

Katie Holmes is mother to one of the most famous and fashionable little girls in the world. There is no five year old, at least in the American non-monarchial world, quite as style-forward as Tom Cruise's one blood heir, and, at least from the paparazzi's perspective, the two are never apart.

In her new film, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," Holmes has to focus on building a relationship with another little girl. Playing the new wife of single father Guy Pearce, she's forced to bond with his young daughter, played by Bailee Madison. What is at first awkward develops into a trust in the most extreme of conditions (hey, it's a horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro), something that Holmes said having a young daughter helped her conceptualize.

"I think being a mom myself, when I read my character and I saw the journey she takes and how we see her make sacrifices for her child -- I think I didn't understand that until I became a mom," Holmes recently told Reuters. "Just how much you love this person. You will do anything for that person, and you have strength you didn't know that you had, which is what I like about my character. So I think that being a mom definitely gave me much more insight to this character."

It's a similar sentiment to what she expressed at a recent press conference to promote the film.

"I love the relationship between Kim and Sally, and I love the bonding that occurs, and it's really about two human beings that recognize something of themselves in each other," she told assembled press. And that shared relationship that turns into something very special and powerful and Kim has to learn not only to listened but to bring this little girl in her life, but to make her feel safe."

She lets her 5 year old wear heels and makeup, and not in a "let's play dress up" kind of way. She loses major mom points for that alone.

There has got to be a special place in hell for the "author" of this article. "Tom Cruises's one blood heir" is as cruel a statement as I have read in this section. I have no doubt that Tom views his two adopted children as fully his children.

I don't think its as cruel as it is just plain moronic and stupid. Really, who writes that? Obviously someone with very little knowledge of the world, parent-child relationships or adoption. That is just appalling.

Goodness - Bailee Madison has played everybody's little girl in every film put out this year. Isn't there another little girl in the world? Anyone?

How STUPID and IGNORANT! So this daughter (named for whatever idiotic reason name Suri) is 'the most fashionable 5 yr old in the world"? God help the child. Idiotic people trying to push their ideas of what is ok for 5 year olds. Where is CPS? I guess too busy going after Christians who dare to swat their 3 or 4 yr old's behind in public when they need it. Meanwhile children like Suri are used and abused by the press and media...and their "parents" just blythly go along..like that is normal. Just remember folks...Michael Jackson never had a real childhood, the press and media refused to let him be a kid. And look what happened to him. Lets hope and pray Suri gets to be normal sometime.

The child's name is "SooWee," which is Sanskrit for "Improbable offspring of gay dyslexic midget pretending to be 'Father'."

To refer to Suri Cruise as "Tom Cruise's one blood heir" is so rude and disrespectful to the two older children that he already has. Just because they are adopted, doesn't make them any less his children or any less his heirs (unless the writer knows something about the contents of his will that the rest of the world doesn't). For the millions of families who have adopted children, siblings and family members, that comment is highly offensive. The implication that blood ties are stronger and more legitimate than adoptive ties is an affront to the millions of families who have CHOSEN to expand their families and take another person into their heart. Such adoptive relationships don't require blood to be legitimate or strong or worthy, they are ties of choice and they are equal to ties of blood. Your writer's comment, in distinguishing Suri from her brother and sister, as the "one blood heir" is ignorant and hateful.

I agree with you whole-heartedly! We have many adopted cousins and a few of my close friends have adopted as well and a comment like that would be very hurtful to those children as well as their parents.

oh wow, I didn't know that....did she actually become a scientologist? I have more and more respect for Nicole Kidman all the time.

Del Toro didn't direct the movie... he wrote and produced it. It is a remake of a TV movie from the 70s.

It's really sad that HP takes marching (and Entertainment story) orders from the Celebrity Centre of the cult of $cienTOMogy - but this drivel shows an all-time low in both journalistic professionalism and basic writing.

Young "mother" finds parallels in her own life and the life of the character she portrays on screen ! What a breakthrough !

And what's with the crappy looking hair ? We're used to seeing Teeny Tom with his dirty, unkempt HairClub4Men weave-wig.....but now he's got Katie not washing her mop for days as well ?
