Steve Jobs announced on Wednesday that he is stepping down as Apple's CEO. Thus ends the tech tycoon's reign at the top of the world's most valuable technology company.

Former COO Tim Cook will take over as the company's CEO; Jobs will remain with Apple as Chairman of the Board.

Way back in 1984, Jobs was a young co-founder of a fledgling company. Before the iPad, iPhone and iMac, there was the Macintosh.

TUAW's Steven Sande notes that Jobs "was the man who had the vision to create a company to give birth to the first truly consumer-oriented personal computer."

Vintage Macs explains that the original Macintosh computer came equipped with 128 kilobytes of RAM, a floppy drive, a 512 x 342 pixel monitor, a mouse, and the applications MacWrite and MacPaint.

The Macintosh was introduced to the world via the now famous "1984" commercial, directed by Ridley Scott. The ad was based on George Orwell's dystopian novel of the same name. The spot premiered during Super Bowl XVIII.

In this YouTube clip featured below, a bow-tie-sporting Jobs introduces the Macintosh, which is listed among the top successes of Steve Jobs's carreer. Check out this awesome vintage Apple moment, then watch all of Steve Job's biggest moments at Apple.

I feel lucky to have been a part of the rise of computers and experience Microsoft and Apple during my lifetime. What a pity that his health is putting an end to his genius. As someone who has worked in graphics since the beginning on a PC, I am now the proud owner of an iPad and an iMac and there's no going back. Jobs changed the world with the iPad. Amazing.

I had stock too, sold it when it hit bottom, maybe in 1997. I loved the Mac. I have the Classic and another one all set up in my basement. I also have an IBookon the desk in my bedroom. I remember the IBM-type PC I used at work. You had to call out the whole IT crew to print a spreadsheet. Some printers wouldn't work with the desktops. The fonts wouldn't work right. But the Apple was so great. It is still the best! I have an Iphone and I love it. That's why I bought stock in the Company, I knew the product was fantastic.

He was a gorgeous young man with a brilliant mind who thought outside the box. Whatever is going on with his health now, I wish him good health in the future. If anyone will beat the odds it is Steve Jobs.

What fond memories of my very first Mac. How I loved it. Didn't get the first model, but the second, and I've still got it. I miss the simple little plug and play. Writing on a Mac now, but I've never loved my newer Macs as much as I loved that little Mac box. Thanks for the great video. (And may I say, Steve Jobs, you certainly were a cute young thing.)

It was like seeing the birth of the future/the modern era captured in film. What a great and positive historical moment for the growth of our species' technological prowess (something g that seems so mundane today as a GUI and voice synthesizing).
