New Yorkers Are Preparing For The Hurricane By Buying Cute Rain Boots (VIDEO)

New Yorkers are known for being fashion-savvy, rain or shine.

So "The "Early Show" decided to go downtown in Manhattan to see how citygoers were preparing for the big storm, which is forcing evacuations in low-lying parts of the city.

Apparently, New Yorkers are buying rain boots. Really cute, expensive rain boots. And thus they have been dubbed "Evacuistas."

Reporter Taryn Winter Brill asked several shoppers in shoe boutiques, "Have you thought about your disaster kit?"

The skeptical-looking New York women all replied, "No, I have not." Instead they had gone shopping for rain boots from brands like Hunter (we really like the lace-up, high-heeled pair in the clip!).

"I mean, if you're going to be out and walking around in all the slush, you might as well try to be a little fashionable," said one chic woman.

We totally agree. Excuse us while we leave the office to go pick up some Hunter wellies.

I think the point is that people prepare for things -- states of emergencies, included -- the same way they already live their lives. So in this case, these fashionistas were doing what they knew to do to prepare, which was getting boots, and doing so in the same shopping pattern that they normally shop in.

I am right outside of NYC and I don't care about my wellies. I do care about having my water restored, loss of power, falling trees and I am hoping everyone is safe.

Oh, yes, the very first thing I think of when I hear "state of emergency" is, "How would these boots look on me as I am running away from a tsunami". I love NYC, and I go often, but this was just stupid.

Hey, I'm in Toronto and I'm not ashamed to say I would make sure I had my Hunter boots ready for the storm!

People deal with stressful situations in many ways.

Really? Next time, when something stressful enters your life, review your thoughts with the same jaundiced eye as you are now.

Only in New York could Hurricane Irene inspire wardrobe makeovers: cute rain boots - check! designer rain gear - check! portable generator - oh, I need that... Never mind, when disaster strikes and the media crews come calling they want to look their best!

Umm, she is really in for a surprise if she thinks hurricanes bring slush. If this is where New Yorkers are in terms of storm knowledge, they are in for a lot of trouble before this is over, and the slush boots aren't enough to save them.

Ahhh... I definitely wouldn't worry about what I was wearing if we were about to get a hurricane. I would be more concerned about having water and some sort of power.

Last time we had a bad hurricane in Houston, I didn't have power for three weeks.

Really ? As luck will have it they will make it through the storm without a hair blowing out of place - and be complaining they can't find a taxi on Sunday to take them to the Theater because of all the broken glass in the streets ......... and don't expect them to walk on the glass and mess up their new boots !

Form your post to Gods ears, you hope that NY does not get it hit bad, much of the city is at sea level and a great deal of damage could be done, remember Katrina?
