Hurricane Irene Hits Washington, D.C.

First Posted: 08/27/11 11:04 PM ET Updated: 10/27/11 06:12 AM ET

Washington, D.C., is bracing as Hurricane Irene reaches the nation's capital.

Mayor Vincent Gray told reporters on a 9:15 p.m. conference call that an hour earlier, the center of the hurricane was 170 miles southeast of the city, heading north at 16 miles per hour with maximum winds of 80 mph. Unlike New York City, which shut down its transit services at noon today, Washington's Metro system is running on its regular schedule.

"We are expecting to be affected by winds of 35 to 45 miles to hour with gusts of about 70 miles per hour," Gray said. "The winds are beginning to peak." He said they'll continue to peak until 2:00 a.m.

"We could have a rainfall that would be anywhere in the range of four to eight inches," Gray said.

19 trees are down so far, and the tropical storm warning will continue until the morning. DC now has a flash flood watch.

Gray said that reports of a curfew in the city were false. "There never was consideration of a curfew, so I don't know how this got started," Gray said. "There will be no curfew. There's no necessity for a curfew."

Gray thanked people for staying off the streets. D.C. saw 9,155 power outages by 9:15 p.m., but that number is coming down as electric company Pepco works with those homes.

The city distributed sandbags and is operating homeless shelters and additional evacuation shelters. Gray said the city is paying special attention to lower-level areas near water such as Anacostia and Georgetown. Many of those who have been evacuated in D.C. faced leaky roofs that made their homes uninhabitable.

A Metro spokesperson said the city's transit system has no change of service planned for weather-related reasons.

"We think we are ready for virtually any eventuality, but one never knows in this situation because there are so many things that can occur spontaneously," Gray said.

As far as Hurricanes/Tropical storms go Isabel was worse in Washington DC than Irene. Isabel snapped telephone polls in some spots the winds were so strong. Sure at the shore and east of town it was very bad, but not so bad in town.

The Politicians survived though.I feel sorry for the people that have lost homes and family and businesses even more sorry for them if they expect the Government to help them at all they might get a little help but how long will the Good-for nothing politicians take to get the help to these people? How long does it take to form commities and analize what happened and then discuss the imformation and tghen they will have to form another commity to oversee the first one and they will have to vote on wether the first commity had it right and then Congress will have to approve anything

What is up with all these Obama and Michelle bashing posts in an article about a huricane. gee wizz folksa.

I agree. The hateful comments about the President and the First Lady are truly hateful. Eric Cantor and others have commented that disasters are the state's responsibility and not the goerenment. John Boehner has made the comment that anything the president wants to do to help the middle and lower class will be vetoed. All of them did sign a pledge to Grover Nordquist. With that said, I do remember people during Katrina on roofs and begging for help.

I disagree. President Obama has spent this country into oblivion and deserves whatever criticism he gets. Michelle is simply along for the ride at the taxpayer's expense.

The current administration has done far more damage than any hurricane, earthquake, flooding or fire could ever do!

I was working a great job, plenty on money coming in, pay for my flood insurance, and not relying on the govt for free handouts. You can blame it on everyone else but the one who is to blame if it make you feel any better!

Besides not liking the way she talks, something I don't think is nationally of that much importance, do you have any complaints about how she's handling the present situation, or are you just so mad as heck that you have to complain and criticize anything and everything.
12:30 PM on 08/28/2011
Just stating that she d...r...a...g....s.... out her words. Takes 10 minutes to make a complete sentence. YOU on the other hand, might like that kind of language skills! as for the comment about my screen name, I'm not a Regressive Republican or a NON-Progressive democrat.... just a citizen who had my coastal home damaged!

if you don't think that being held in a high position and not being a good speaker to the public/nation, tells us a lot about YOU! Thanks for letting us know what level you are on!

And the war in Afghanistan was started when??
And the illegal war in Iraq was started when exactly?

30 months seems like a few minutes in the scenario.

Einstein indeed!

Why so? Do the conservative NY drag queens wear longer dresses??
12:35 PM on 08/28/2011
Didn't anybody tell you? There's no such thing as a conservative drag queen. We are normal people who do normal things, unlike you liberals.

The nation would be far, far better off if Washington just sank right back into the swamp upon which it was built.
10:58 AM on 08/28/2011
If only we could be so lucky! Maybe it's time to move the capitol of this nation to the Heartland, or middle of the country. Maybe that would change the attitude of our politicians!

That's an excellent idea, move the capitol to where humans live.

Be very careful, the "Anointed One" may move it to Chicago, IL before we can change the WH.residents! So far he has received any and all laws as "do not apply to him".

I lived on Tybee Island, off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. We lived through many hurricanes in a little brick house right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Although we got use to the hurricanes, we became respectful of their fury. I saw the big damage to the big houses built on stilts. Unfortunately, there were no building codes involving hurricanes back in those days.

Maybe if Michele had walked outside, the hurricane would have been scared away.

"D.C. Gets Slammed by Irene"

Headline should be, "Heavy Winds and Rain hit D.C."

Really! I saw the headline this morning and thought that something had really happened there. These headlines are very misleading.

It should have been, "Water droplets and slight breeze trickle DC"
