Maryland Teen In Custody For Allegedly Facilitating Terrorist Jihad Jane Plot

By MARYCLAIRE DALE   08/26/11 07:12 PM ET   AP

PHILADELPHIA -- A Maryland teenager from Pakistan is being held in U.S. custody on terrorism charges, accused of soliciting funds and recruits to help a Pennsylvania woman known as Jihad Jane, two people close to the investigation confirm.

Juvenile charges filed last month accuse the 17-year-old of helping Colleen LaRose support overseas terrorists she had met online, they said Friday. LaRose, 48, has pleaded guilty to charges she plotted to kill a Swedish artist who had offended Muslims.

The Ellicott City, Md., teen had accepted a full scholarship to prestigious Johns Hopkins University, according to a person close to his family. Instead, he remains in custody at a youth facility in Berks County, Pa. He could have his case moved to adult court when he turns 18 next month.

According to the person, the FBI searched the family's home near Baltimore and interviewed the teen several times at FBI headquarters without a lawyer or family member present. However, the parents had authorized the interviews.

The teen met LaRose online when he was 15, according to LaRose's indictment and the person close to the investigation.

A law enforcement official confirmed details of his arrest to The Associated Press. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the sealed juvenile case. The AP is not publicizing the teen's name because of his age.

The teen's lawyer, Jeffrey M. Lindy, told the AP it would be "very inappropriate" for him to comment on the case, which he called "highly sensitive."

The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported on the arrest in Friday editions.

The teen came to the U.S. four years ago and has lived with his strict, education-focused family in suburban Baltimore. An older brother attends a college honors program in engineering. The parents, legal residents, work menial jobs.

Teachers at Mt. Hebron High School remember the May graduate for his strong work ethic.

"(He) was very strong academically and an extremely hardworking student," Howard County school district spokeswoman Patti Caplan told the AP.

The teen is accused of meeting LaRose in an online chat room in 2009.

Her indictment alleges that he solicited money for her online and circulated a questionnaire to at least one woman asking about "her beliefs and intentions with regard to jihad," and if she had a European passport.

In soliciting funds, he pledged to forward money to LaRose, for her to pass on to the jihadists, authorities say.

"I know the sister and by Allah, all money will be transferred to her. The sister will then transfer the money to the brother via a method that I will not disclose," he wrote in July 2009, according to the LaRose indictment.

LaRose, of Pennsburg, had dubbed herself Jihad Jane in a YouTube video that had caught the attention of the FBI by 2009.

She faces a possible life term after pleading guilty to four federal charges, including conspiracy to support terrorists and lying to the FBI. Her sentencing has not been scheduled.

LaRose, an elder caretaker in small-town Pennsylvania, had cultivated a shadow life online. She destroyed her hard drive, stole her boyfriend's passport and moved to Ireland in August 2009. She soon persuaded another U.S. woman, Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, to join her there the following month.

Paulin-Ramirez, 32, a single mother from Colorado, had also spent long hours on the Internet before moving to Ireland with her 6-year-old son. She married an Algerian man days later.

She voluntarily returned to the U.S. after she, her husband and five others were detained in Ireland in a terror probe in March 2010. She pleaded guilty in Philadelphia this past March to a conspiracy charge and faces a maximum 15-year term.

In the view of Department of Justice officials, the charges against the homegrown, female suspects underscore "the evolving nature" of the terrorist threat.

The case now involves not just the American women but a teenage boy educated in U.S. schools.

Defense lawyer Jeremy Ibrahim, a Department of Justice veteran who represents Paulin-Ramirez and has handled a few federal juvenile cases, one involving an arson that destroyed part of Interstate 95, said the case "clearly was a difficult decision for the prosecutors."

"However, they certainly appear to be acting in the best interest of all involved, including the American people," Ibrahim said.

LaRose's lawyer, public defender Mark Wilson, has not returned recent messages seeking comment about the juvenile's arrest.

The teen is charged with providing material support to terrorists and other crimes. His diverse, academically rigorous high school was about half white and one-quarter Asian, including a fair number of students of Middle Eastern descent, Caplan said. The school, with nearly 1,500 students, is also 13 percent black and 5 percent Hispanic. The suspect did not take part in sports but won several academic honors and awards.

A Johns Hopkins spokeswoman confirmed the teen had been accepted but would not be enrolling.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on reports of his arrest.

Wow 'JihadJane' - they always seem to come up with a nickname for someone. Doesn't matter if the person has done good or bad, he or she will get a nickname. I just don't understand the importance of this or am I missing something?

Pakistani people define themselves first by their religion and second by their education. What a waste of a wonderful young mind! Such shame he's brought onto his poor family. He will never get to go to JHU now, never get to fulfill his parents American dream for him. He squandered everything for muslim extremism. Yet another life they've stolen.

Well if it is found he did these things then he is a terroristy and should be treated as so with life in prison or the death sentence. He is old enough to know what he is doing and is responsible for those actions and should take his medicine like an adult.

It makes no sense, so what if he is only 17, he is old enough to know better. Seems to me
it shows a lack of bring up. He's a trator and should be punished as such. She should be put
to death flat out.

An overview, in observation of "games" contests and contestants.

The irrational fanaticism of any religious organizations overall strategic ideology, is what should be scrutinized here.

The muslim world has the all inclusive wholly / holy jihad issues, and their followers are primed to verbally expound their belief system which calls for the killing of all of those who disagree with their particular brand of religion.

The christians are raised to believe that only their faith will win the battle of religions because it is the one true faith. They are also primed by holy men to go out and pander their particular brand or flavor of faith.

It is an overall "neck to neck" pandering game to which it is said to have only one outcome.
This reveals that it is just a contest, a race, a GAME, with contestants.

But there are no acceptable parting gifts good enough for the loser of this primal game, errant integrity and ego issues warp all perspective in this massive ego boosting contest.
Who will become the cock of the walk? Who's cuisine will reign supreme?

Only contests, games, have only one winner.
This encourages the stubbornly strong "us and them" division on the game board.
The game of religion runs concurrently with the game of life.

Each of these games have got a very predictable outcome if and when either side wins, as they are both being played with "risk" and "stratego" on a world wide "monopoly" board. Checkmate!

I don't know about your religion, mine doesn't think it's the best nor does it try to impose
itself on others. Ane we do not want to commit suicide blowing ourselfs up to prove anything.

Ah, then you must not be Christian, because Christians have been trying to force their religion down my throat my entire life, and they send missionaries around the globe to force their beliefs on others, usually people who follow religions and cultures far older than the entire Judeo-Christian-Islamic theology, and yes, they are one. Islam is a combination of Judaism, Christianity and ancient Arabic paganism. Then again, Christianity is almost entirely pagan in roots, but I digress on that point.

Each year, our governent continues to allow millions of foreigners to come to the U.S. Hundreds of thousands of muslims are included and will become embedded to bring harm to our citizens. Their main goal is to eliminate as many infidels as possible. They have time, a lot of time for the right moment.

You like to spread fear, don't you? Fear is the weapon of terrorism, so doesn't that make what you are doing a form of terrorism?

Either that, or you're paranoid. You need to get a grip, you really do. Hate is messing with your mind, and it is only going to make your life miserable, which is what caused Jihad Jane to become the freak she did. This teenage boy is no worse than the Columbine killers, and they weren't Muslim.

Fear is a waste of time and energy, and fear is destroying the American people. If we let it continue to do so, then the terrorists win, don't they?
01:31 PM on 08/29/2011
It's not spreading fear, it's reality. The head in the sand comment nailed it. We kept our head in the sand before and we got 9/11 to show for it. Not trying to start a fight but it's true. We might fear something we don't understand, but we get islam shoved down our throats at every turn. It would be ignorant of us as a people not to wake up and do some checking into it. To me, all signs point to the majority of muslims don't like America in general and don't want to assimilate. That same rule applies to ANY country that happens to be graciously hosting them, period.

My dear chilifan, it is not fear I'm spreading, it is vigilance. And, nice try with that "hate" thing you lefties always spew out when that is your feeling about anyone outside your ilk.
09:07 AM on 08/29/2011
Chilifan, why do you say its spreading fear? You have to look at the situation we are in and take action. Sticking our heads in the sand will help nothing. Im sure America talked about Hitler before we fought him. And Im sure there were calls to stop talking about him for spreading fear.
The boy was helping terrorism. As for being no worse then Columbine..... I think thats bad enough. There are millions out there that want to see all Jews and Christians dead. Its not just a few bad apples. Consider this........ How many Columbine students would it take to keep the United States military at war for 10 years?
10:41 PM on 08/28/2011
What can they do? Get sent back to their own country and blow themselves up. I know thats harsh, but the Goverment can no longer protect the Americans and they let them all in and our safety is put at stake. Why?

Who first started using the term, "Own it !", I do not know, I guess it mean "Take the responsibility for the wrong you have done and try to make it right". I knew a company that would tell its employees, "If you make a mistake acknowledge it quickly and quickly make any adjustments with the offended customer that have to make to have them once again become a satisfied customer !". What can Islam do? What can individual Muslims do, well since the Quran says at 5:45-55 that its writer also gave the Scriptures to the Christians and the Jews all Muslims should go over the entire Bible, Genesis to Revelation, examination each significantly relevant verse for any good advice that can help them become better people. They should get to know the Bible well enough to "Scripturally call any professing Christian on the carpet" for any Scriptural infractions they may commit in deviation from what is correct for Christians. "Own it !" Your Quran says its writer gave the Christians their direction, some of you say "They corrupted it", but one, if serious about being pleasing to Our Creator should look at each verse and analyze how the verse can be better or use the good it has to help another person become what Our Creator wants them to be.

One way to battle the "evolving nature" of the homegrown terrorist threat, especially with young students, is stop the bashing of our country and the revisionist history being taught in school where our educators are teaching our children what an awful, awful, people Americans are and that we should apologize to the world for who we are. Afterall, we have a President who does...

We have gotten off track with some type of bizarre social experiment with our kids, but it's not too late to get back on track. Let's teach our children to have pride in our country and our exceptional form of government, civil rights, women's rights, freedoms and opportunities. And if anyone is foolish enough to believe that there is another country in the world that is better than ours, tell them to travel the world and see what the social condition is in other countries.

If we don't get our children to understand that they started off with a huge advantage in life by being born in this country, and to explain the sacrifices so many before them made in order to keep our freedoms, and those of other countries in tact, than those before us have sacrificed in vain. Have we become that fat, lazy and complacent - not to mention politically correct - that we should take this country for granted? Shame on us if this is our attitude. It's time we all wake-up before our children vote to make Arabic the national language.
