Rick Perry: Social Security A 'Monstrous Lie'

(AP/The Huffington Post) -- During a stop in Iowa on Saturday Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry stood by his criticism of Social Security as a "Ponzi scheme." He said the entitlement program amounts to a "monstrous lie" for young Americans, the Houston Chronicle reports.

HuffPost's Elise Foley reported last week:

...Perry recently walked back his claims that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme," but other Republicans have made similar statements in recent months, saying the entitlement program is a "scheme" to take money from the American people.

Perry has previously taken a hard-line stance against Social Security. In his 2010 book, "Fed Up!" he suggested the program was unconstitutional, put in place "at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government." He also wrote that Social Security is "set up like an illegal Ponzi scheme."

While on the trail in the Hawkeye State, Perry warned that President Obama has driven the nation's economy into a ditch, arguing that his own record as governor qualifies him to lead the way out.

"Instead of eliminating our economic crisis, he worsened it," said Perry. "Instead of addressing the debt, he exploded it."

Perry told nearly 400 activists that he's created 1 million jobs while governor of Texas, all during a stretch where the nation was losing 2.5 million jobs. Perry said he'll take his record of cutting taxes and regulation to Washington and he said the Texas rebound proves that those efforts work.

Perry was joined at a county GOP picnic by fellow candidates, Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan, but Perry was getting the bulk of the attention.

Perry singled out recent comments by former Iowa governor and current Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's that food stamps were helping to bolster the economy by getting buying power into people's hands.

"Food stamps are not a solution, they are a symbol of the problem," said Perry. "Today's leaders see it differently."

Perry sought to drive the problem home, noting that Iowa has suffered as well under the Obama administration.

"Today, one in eight Iowans is on food stamps," said Perry. "That is a testament to the widespread misery created by this administration."

Perry has moved near the top of most polls only a couple of weeks after announcing his decision to run for the Republican nomination. He was making his second visit to Iowa, where precinct caucuses traditionally launch the nominating season, and he has made it clear he will compete for those caucuses . He's begun building the organizational structure essential to delivering backers to those caucuses.

With his solid standing in the polls, he ignored all of his rivals and focused on Obama and Washington.

"It's a statement that the state that feeds the world has so many people dependent on the government for food," said Perry.

"You have lost 12,000 jobs since the current resident of the White House took office," said Perry. He said that is precisely the opposite of his own record in office.

"Since I've become governor, Texas has created more than 1 million jobs, while the rest of the country has lost 2.5 million jobs," said Perry.

His twin themes: making life easier for business, and making life tougher for government.

"We've got to stop spending money we don't have," said Perry. "I promise you this, I will work every day to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential to you as I can."

While there haven't been any recent polls in Iowa, most activists here put Perry in the first tier of Republican candidates.

Kevin McLaughlin, one of the organizers of Saturday's event said Perry's rapid rise comes because he's a governor of a big state, but also because he offers a message that resonates with the Republican base.

"He's the governor of a state that doesn't have an income tax and he's riding the wave," said McLaughlin.

Paul has caused something of a stir in the state, building a deeply committed core of backers that allowed him to post a very close second- place showing in the Republican straw poll.

"Our problem is government is too big," said Paul. "As government gets bigger, your personal liberties are limited. We don't need a federal reserve system, we need a gold standard for our money."

Perry should be held accountable for the lies he tell the people, and all the others that get up on that stage, and give the wrong answers, even though they know exactly what they'er saying is untrue.
They should be called out, right then and there on stage, and challenged to tell the truth.

The only scam I see going on here Rick is the one the Republicans are working on to screw the people out of their invested social security retirement.
Trying to scare the people into giving up the only safty net they to fall back on . Thats preventing the Big Business from tightening their grip any further on the people's lives.
Which they are already doing so through the economy and the Job Market.
This is a corporate take over of the peoples right's.
They want to distroy the people's government so Private corporations can take over the country.
Right now the government that is sworn to uphold the constatution that protects the freedoms and rights of the American people ,Is the only thing standing in their way.

How can a business replace the time of a person's life that was given to the company? How will that or any business make any money without workers to build their products, sell them, service them, man the office or all those hundreds of tasks that are all part of the chain. And don't forget that a market does not generally consist of 4 rich people buying a product it requires volume of sales.
We workers pay into the Social Security System and the congress steals that money and apparently bails out their rich corporate friends, so how is this the fault of those on SS? It is the fault of the Congress. Duh.

Hey, if corporations are people, how come they do not have to put into Social Security and stuff?

Brings up another point; since corporations are legally people (recent Supreme Court decision) what is the nationality of these guys. (girls? what is their gender?) I cannot have dual citizenship, can they?
I have maintained since they became people that if my wife gets smart and dumps me i'm going to start dating corporations and marry one. We'll adopt some little workers, i mean kids, and some small corporations. Then i'm going to divorce my dear corporation (irreconcilable differences) and take half the assets.
An American success story!

So they told us to invest in 401ks. HAHAHAHA! Have you seen yours lately? 201k is more like it (200.5 technically). I trust Wall Street as much as K Street with our money.

I am sick of the Rick Perrys of the world. There are too many of them.

Perry knows that the taxpayer will pay him an early and very expensive retirement out of the income taxes we pay. And his medical care will be paid by us, too.

Perry doesn't want us to have a bare minimum retirement and medical care even though many will pay in for 45 years for the right to have benefits and health care.

What a jerk!

Sounds more like some of the "jerks" coming on HP constantly defending big corporate business and the politicians whose pockets are lined with their money. Then these same "jerks" go on to bash and disparage main street America. Where has all the logic and common sense gone in this country?

It isn't what your income is as much as it costs to live.

Gailsunday wrote earlier about 'rolling back the price of everything.....pharmaceuticals......oil, gasoline, real estate, loan interests, late fees, interest rates on credit, all kinds of insurances, bonuses and salaries of CEO, white collar management, medical practice, food, health care, hospitals, ....and I am sure there are a whole lot more fees of all kinds'.

People don’t realize how much the stock market is driving up prices, too. They say that after a stock is sold once, then the business doesn’t make any money on the stocks. That is not true, many in the company get stock options. Also they buy extra stocks, then try their best to increase the value of those stocks.

Higher profits are what makes the price of a stock go up and also gives those multimillion dollar CEOs their big bonuses.

We need to stop the slashing of Medicare and Social Security for future retirees. If we don't , then many will end up working until they drop while paying for lavish and early retirement and medical benefits for the elected state and federal government retirees, by us paying more federal taxes.

We already match the money they put into their TSP which is like our 401k, -only better, (because they 'work' for us.)
