Gemma Ward To Star In 'The Great Gatsby'

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/30/2011 7:49 am Updated: 10/29/2011 5:12 am

There's been no shortage of models making the leap from the catwalk to the big screen lately.

This summer, we saw Rosie Huntington-Whiteley star in "Transformers 3." Then we learned that Sasha Pivovarova will appear in autumn's "In Time" alongside Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried.

And last week, we reported that Natalia Vodianova will play opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in World War II-era love story, "Belle du Seigneur."

The latest supermodel to hit the silver screen? Runway beauty Gemma Ward, who has just signed onto the cast of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby." It's a great fit for the Aussie model: coincidentally, the 1920s New York-set project is, for reasons unknown, filming down under.

This isn't Ward's first foray into film, as she played a mermaid in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." But she is said to have a larger role in the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation.

Though her character has not yet been confirmed, the New York Observer notes that the most prominent female part up for grabs is Catherine, Myrtle Wilson's sister. Carey Mulligan already has dibs on Daisy Buchanan.

Who do you think she'll play?

I believe this will be the third movie attempt for this novel. I hope it turns out better than the first two. "Gatsby," one of my very favorite novels, seems to be very difficult to translate to the screen. I tend to doubt success again this time.

The greatness of the novel is the narration, and unless we have a narrator reading the entire book word-for-word over the visual images, a movie can never equal Fitzgerald.s greatest work. Some literary works are best left that way.

Make the first sentence of the second graph: "The greatness of the novel is the WRITING..."

Sorry 'bout that. I should wait until I'm fully awake before I start typing.

Why does Hollywood (or should I say "Hooeywood") insist on remaking movies that have been made a number of times? The story of Gatsby has been told and retold in two or three full-length movies on the big screen and one on the small screen. What is the point of making the same movie over and over again? It's like remaking Titanic again and again and again. The story is always going to end the same way and we know it by heart. Move on to something new and fresh! This one threatens to go right down the drain, I predict.

She can't even hold a candle to Mia Farrow with Robert Redford in their film of Gatsby. This is a non-starter.

I've always felt that Gatsby is the most over rated book ever written.

But can she act? I guess we'll find out. It's amazing to me, though, that celebrities who have never been in the acting field and never had any ambitions to be actors end up as actors. Some who come to mind are Alex Karras (in Victor Victoria), Dick Butkus (in various movies and TV shows), and Mikhail Barishnikov (in White Nights and Company Business). These three have done pretty well as actors (not great, nowhere near award status, but not nauseating, either). You just never know.

Justin Timberlake in another movie? Please, spare us. He looks and acts like a little weasel or a little girl with his little girl mannerisms and voice. He's the ultimate effeminate twink.

oooh Hendricks would be perfect for Myrtle. I seen Jordan more tall and athletic, but I can't put a finger on who.

All three of these roles have actually already been cast.

This is one blonde that will make you weak in the knees. Very pretty, but maybe it is just me and my weakness for pretty blonde ladies.
