Joseph Hyungmin Son, 'Austin Powers' Actor, Convicted Of Rape & Torture

The actor who played Dr. Evil's sidekick in the first 'Austin Powers' movie may face life in prison for taking part in a brutal abduction and gang rape.

Joseph Hyungmin Son, 40, was convicted last week of raping and torturing a 20-year-old woman in 1990, according to Los Angeles station KTLA. The victim was reportedly walking her dog on Christmas Eve near her home in in Huntington Beach, California, when Son and an accomplice abducted her at gun point. Son was accused of repeatedly raping the woman, sexually assaulting her with the gun then releasing her naked with her pants tied around her eyes.

Although the crime took place years before Son appeared in the 1997 "Austin Powers" movie, it wasn't until 2008 that DNA evidence linked him to the attack. He will be sentenced September 19 and faces 15 years to life in prison.

First time I saw this animal was in one of the earliest UFC events in the mid 90's. He fought Royce Gracie in a tournament and all he did was repeatedly punch Gracie in the nether regions around 50 times. He still lost, but Gracie had to remove himself from the tournament because of obvious pain. When it was announced that Gracie forfeited, Son ran out to the stage and celebrated with his friends. When I heard about this case, it didn't shock me in the least.

If this happened in 1990, he was 19 or 20 as well. Since he reportedly did no other crimes, would a penalty that combines some jail plus probation not be appropriate? As a society we jail a lot of people for life for acts that are not murder, and are regarded in our motherland--Europe--as sadistic barbarians for that.

It wasn't murder but it was a brutal gang rape and beating - a 19 year old kidnapped while walking with her dog on Christmas Eve. You might like to read this crime's facts in this press release from Orange County, and don't forget the victim impact statement (last paragraph) - this girl lost her 20's and almost lost her life.
