Michele Bachmann Memoir Completed, Will Be Released In November

Michele Bachmann Memoir

HILLEL ITALIE   08/29/11 08:53 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — Michele Bachmann has a book deal.

Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Group (USA), announced Monday that the Republican presidential candidate's memoir will arrive in November and already has been completed. The book, reports of which first circulated in June, is currently untitled.

Sentinel declined comment on whether Bachmann had assistance on the book. Former Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund said reports that he worked on it were wrong. He said that he had no involvement with the book.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Bachmann is not permitted to receive an advance against royalties.

According to Sentinel, Bachmann will "share previously untold stories" about her private life, "including her roles as a tax attorney, a wife, a mother of five and a foster mother of 23." Virtually all of the Republicans candidates have published books, a standard for modern presidential campaigns.

"People are the most important ingredient in life," Bachmann said in a statement issued Monday through Sentinel. "I love people, and I care deeply that our nation's economy turns around so they can realize their American dream. This book will help to share my enthusiasm for an energized, pro-growth economy, and the life experiences that inform my optimism for the American people and for American greatness."

Bachmann formally entered the race to seek the GOP nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012 in June. By August, she was celebrating a win in the closely watched Iowa Republican straw poll, a test of strength in the leadoff caucus state. But Texas Gov. Rick Perry's decision to join the field has weakened Bachmann's standing in the polls. She trails Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, with Texas Rep. Ron Paul also in the race.

Doug Sachtleben, a Bachmann spokesman, said the book rollout shouldn't detract from her campaign.

"Throughout Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida, the congresswoman has kept a full schedule of meeting and talking with thousands of people, and she will continue with that full campaign schedule all through the days up to and beyond the release of her memoir," Sachtleben said.

Bachmann's climb comes barely five years after her arrival in Washington. The outspoken congresswoman tapped into anger about taxes and government spending that gave rise to the tea party and paired it with a social conservative following she honed in Minnesota.

She also has a history of controversial remarks, most recently when she said that Hurricane Irene and last week's earthquake near Washington were signs that God was unhappy about government spending. Bachmann later explained that she was joking.

Now 55, Bachmann didn't get her political start until her mid-40s when she won a state Senate seat the year after losing a local school board race.

KaChink!  How candidates cash in!

♦  'speaking fees' paid directly to candidate, spouse, family members instead of or in addition to donations; may also be paid by the campaign committee itself for a variety of things.

♦  salaries/honoraria/consulting contracts, paid by either donors or their own committee or a friendly PAC.

♦  Book sales!  Palin and Pelosi are great examples; donors/friends/their own committees or PACs buy the books and distribute them in various ways.  Pelosi's book sold about 3K copies, but there were articles about her committee/pacs/donors buying them in bulk; I can't get any sale numbers above the 3K mark. Hillary's memoir vastly outsold Bill's.

♦ Reality TV; Delay on DWTS, Palin's series (which also compensated her family members), etc.

And of course the standard perks/gifts like scholarhips for spouses/kids, internships/plum jobs, BoD positions for businesses and charities (compensated), travel, vacations (hotel/food comped), tangible gifts, etc.  This isn't meant to be a complete list; they're too numerous to handle in 250 words.

Bachmann is an embarassment to a lot of Minnesotans and she hides behind her ideas of God and
paranoia. Please people dont give her any credence.

Surprise, Surprise, another politician who hasn't done a thing to help this country cashing in on her fame. Sound like Palin? This has to be a very short book. Isn't it amazing how many tea partiers have books. How about proposing legislatoin. Oh, I forgot, you're too busy writting your book. Was it written on tax payer time? Perhaps a tax payer lawsuit is in order to get our money back for fraudulently accepting a public salary while working on private matters.

It probably goes something like "Gee I forgot what I was going to say"! LOL

The money from this book is reallly going to fund her run against Amy Klobochur. Her running for president is really a cover to build up her war chest for the next election.

I prefer my politicians to have at least a three digit IQ. When this stupid 'woman' yelled Happy Birthday to Elvis on the anniversary of his DEATH....that was all I needed to know. I'm not even a raving Elvis fan...love him but not raving....and I gasped when she yelled out HB. I think anyone who was alive on Aug. 16, 1977 knows exactly what they were doing when they heard of his death. This woman cannot be bothered by something as 'meaningless' to her as FACTS.

Geez, even I knew Elvis' birthday.  I let my office staff propose holidays for inclusion (it was a lot of fun), and that was one of them.  You wouldn't believe the cakes they'd do the day before to celebrate!

How in the heck can all of these famous folks just "up and write a book" and get rich, when (although I know I'm not famous) I can't even get to first base with mine??? Go figure! http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1944639

HHenry, 'celebrities' get limited runs (especially after Pelosi; her last one sold about 3K copies.)  For the rest of us, sometimes it's just dumb luck.  I had a summer job when I was 19 with a senior partner at a law firm, and didn't have anything to do in the office other than the  once-a-month multimillion dollar foreign deal (a week living in a hotel, netotiating and writing multiparty/multicountry contracts, great training.)  He didn't care what I did the other three weeks as long as I was in the office, and we had these new 'computers' (with mag cards), so I started writing a silly thing.  He wandered by my desk on a Friday night, was curious and picked it up and went home.  I came in to a big note on my desk on Monday.  He'd read it, had it faxed to a NY publisher friend, took care of the contracts for me, then bragged all over the firm about having the smartest intern.  He remained a friend and mentor until he died when I was in law school; and he made me promise to keep writing, and I have.

I've heard that in modern history (since electricity) that publishers are flooded with manuscripts, and of course there's vanity press but then you assume the risks.  You don't make a lot of money unless you hit the best-seller lists (my aunt and cousin have done that); I figure my pay is maybe a penny an hour for writing.
