Michele Bachmann Says She'd Consider Oil, Natural Gas Drilling In Everglades (VIDEO)

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/29/2011 9:14 am Updated: 10/29/2011 5:12 am

(AP/The Huffington Post) SARASOTA, Fla. — Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Sunday that she would consider oil and natural gas drilling in the Everglades if it can be done without harming the environment.

Bachman said the United States needs to tap into all of its energy resources no matter where they exist if it can be done responsibly.

"The United States needs to be less dependent on foreign sources of energy and more dependent upon American resourcefulness. Whether that is in the Everglades, or whether that is in the eastern Gulf region, or whether that's in North Dakota, we need to go where the energy is," she said. "Of course it needs to be done responsibly. If we can't responsibly access energy in the Everglades then we shouldn't do it."

In 2002, the federal government at the urging of President George W. Bush bought back oil and gas drilling rights in the Everglades for $120 million. Bachmann, who wants to get rid of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said she would rely on experts to determine whether drilling can be done without harming the environment.

"No one wants to hurt or contaminate the earth. ... We don't want to harm our water, our ecosystems or the air. That is a minimum bar," she said.

"From there, though, that doesn't mean that the two have to be mutually exclusive. We can protect the environment and do so responsibly, but we can also protect the environment and not kill jobs in America and not deny ourselves access to the energy resources that America's been so blessed with."

The Minnesota congresswoman, who is seeking the GOP nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012, is on a four-day swing through Florida, ending Monday in Miami.

"We do have EPA's in each of the 50 states and I think that it's up to the states," she said. "The states have the right to develop their own environmental protections and regulations, as they all have."

She said she recognizes there is a federal role when environmental issues cross borders, but she added that a big problem with the EPA now is that it does not consider job creation or job losses as part of its role in enforcing regulations. She said the regulations it does have prevent businesses from being able to reasonably create a profit.

"If we create a new department that is focused on conservation and get rid of the EPA, that would send a strong signal about what our priorities are. We believe in conservation, but I also believe at the same time that the EPA has overstepped its bounds," Bachmann said.

Among other topics, Bachmann said the stock market drop after this summer's debt ceiling compromise demonstrated disappointment that Washington had not taken more significant steps to reduce spending.

"We need to get our house in order fairly quickly," she said. "What you saw with the markets was the markets reacting to the fact that Washington, D.C., did nothing to get its house in order."

The St. Petersburg Times reports on the message Bachmann communicated to Floridians at a rally:

She hailed the tea party as being common-sense Americans who understand government shouldn't spend more than it takes in, know they're taxed enough already and want government to abide by the Constitution.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians," said the conservative congresswoman, according to the Times. "We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending."

She also said she would consider Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who took office earlier this year, as a running mate.

"Marco Rubio has the hallmarks of, I think, everything that a person would look for in a potential candidate. He's got so much going for him," Bachmann said, also naming South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint as another possibility.

Bachmann signaled to the Times that she is serious about winning the Sunshine State in 2012.

UPDATE: Bachmann spokeswoman Alice Stewart tells Talking Points Memo that the presidential candidate's comments regarding last week's earthquake and hurricane were made "in jest."

Decades ago they drilled test wells all over Florida, no oil to be found not even in the Glades. She should know better but then history is not her strong point... come to think about it she does not have any strong points.

Michele why don't you offer to make the Florida Everglades a site for environmental dumping without regulation. Just think, you could be personably responsible for the extermination of hundreds of species of plants and animals. Once again if it's okay for business to do it then the rest doesn't really matter. One would have to ask the question if that there is any place in the United States where drilling for oil would be stopped for environmental concerns. What comes after all of the public lands have been raped, the repeal of Eminent Domain laws, so that private lands could be opened. Home many more US Constitutional Amendments are we going to need, to take away the Rights of Individuals, in order to give business the freedom to take everything?

I think she should consider canceling her campaign for POTUS because she's got zero chance of being elected.

Although, if she did win he GOP nomination it would make it a cake walk for Obama to get re-elected...

This kind of mean spirited bashing is the heart of the Democratic party. Don't respond with an alternative, just trash the person. The hypocrisy of most Dems that comment here shows that a new idea will never come from your side. This is why I left the Democratic party. At least Bachmann has an original idea. What we see coming out of Washington is nothing. Exploring real answers to our energy problems doesn't only mean solar, wind, or thermal. These are solutions that won't be implemented because they are still in their early stages and too expensive. We have oil and gas in the ground in many places less sensitive than the Everglades. Why not use these sources first. Lets go for domestic sources of energy and leave other solutions to science fiction for now.

since republicans never clean up after them selves and have not an Original idea since Hoover died, we have renamed the party of "just say No" to republicants! Cant raise the taxes, cant bring the troops home, ,cant say what your plan is to get more jobs, cant say how they plan to better the ecconomy other than cutting the debbt! where In Gods Name were the republicants when bush said "lets go git sadam Hussain, he hehea, he"! Oh yeah 98% of the republicans voted to go to war! that was ron Paul! and yes some democratics felt they had to because their jobs were @ risk, and most who voted for the authorization, did lose their jobs! if germany and japan have gotten alternatives up to 105 and efficency of transmittion to 90% while on the best day in the usa our transmittion of electrity loss is over 45%while germanys loss is 10% and in production of electrity germany and japan and now china, are using far less Jewels to product kilowatts! why is that? Because the oil industry demands deregulation! deregulation demands inefficency!

You'd think someone so deeply religious would defend those who's calling is to protect "God's" creations like the EPA.... Get your priorities straight Michelle, according to the bible we are shepards of the earth, not owners. A shepard looks after the flock's well being and continued health with an eye constantly looking out for the next generation. It is not our place to destroy the planet, it does not belong to us. We are merely looking after it for our children and their children...

So drilling for oil and gas in a completely unique on this planet ecosystem recognized as a national treasure by the government by companies that have proven time and time again that they have neither the ability or desire to clean up their messes is a "good idea"??? And now she wants Rubio as a running mate, who's family has recently been tied to illegal drug importing cartels? Whatever this woman has said in the past may have been entertaining, bordering on comedic but this has to stop now. She is completely unfit for office.
03:07 PM on 08/30/2011
So the earthquake and hurricane is a sign from god that we need to abuse our planet and environment more?

"To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed." -- Theodore Roosevelt

"Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance." -- Theodore Roosevelt

"The nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value." -- Theodore Roosevelt

Bachmann is just another Reagan Republican betraying the legacy of the Grand Old Party.
