Afghanistan Deaths

KABUL, Afghanistan -- August has become the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, where international forces have started to go home and let Afghan forces take charge of securing their country.

A record 66 U.S. troops have died so far this month, eclipsing the 65 killed in July 2010, according to a tally by The Associated Press.

This month's death toll soared when 30 Americans - most of them elite Navy SEALs - were killed in a helicopter crash Aug. 6. They were aboard a Chinook shot down as it was flying in to help Army Rangers who had come under fire in Wardak province. It was the single deadliest incident of war being waged by Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces and insurgents.

On Tuesday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai used the start of a three-day Muslim holiday to plead with insurgents to lay down their arms and help rebuild the nation. Karzai wants Afghan security forces to take the lead in defending and protecting the nation by the end of 2014.

At a palace celebration, he also greeted eight boys and young men who had been asked to become suicide bombers, but then turned themselves in to Afghan authorities.

"Today we witness another good day for Afghanistan," he said. "We have with us those children who were forced by the Taliban - or whoever was behind it - to commit suicide attacks. They (the children) were saved using their wisdom."

He said five had been released to their parents, one was going to study in Turkey and authorities were still trying to find the relatives of the remaining two.

Karzai spoke on Eid al-Fitr, a holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which is observed by millions of Muslims around the world. The month of dawn-to-dusk fasting and extended prayer began Aug. 1.

Violence is being reported across the nation despite the U.S.-led coalition's drive to rout insurgents from their strongholds in the south.

At the same time, the U.S. military has begun to implement President Barack Obama's order to start withdrawing the 33,000 extra troops he dispatched to the war. He ordered 10,000 out this year and another 23,000 withdrawn by the summer of 2012, leaving about 68,000 U.S. troops on the ground. Although major combat units are not expected to start leaving until late fall, two National Guard regiments comprising about 1,000 soldiers started going home last month.

Aside from the 30 Americans killed in the Chinook crash, southwest of Kabul, 23 died this month in Kandahar and Helmand provinces in southern Afghanistan, the main focus of Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces. The remaining 13 were killed in eastern Afghanistan.

Besides the 66 Americans killed so far this month, the NATO coalition suffered the loss of two British, four French, one New Zealander, one Australian, one Polish and five other troops whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed. One of the five was killed in a roadside bombing Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said. No other details were released.

So far this year, 403 international service members, including at least 299 Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan.

So where is Code Pink and all the other anti-war progressives that complained endlessly before Obama took office? Interesting that we don't see much of them these days. Guess they changed their minds and are now pro-war????

403 dead *this year*. That's 403 invaluable American lives, the blood of which are all entirely on Obama's hands. There is no good reason to be there, none. We are just killing Afghani's and losing Americans to fill the bank accounts of the companies that own our elected officials. I spit on all of them.

I assume that the families of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan are told that they died to "protect us from terrorism." That's similar to how deaths in Vietnam were to "keep us free" and "protect us from communism." You have to wonder how long Americans are going to accept this.

Until we have a draft and the apathetic Americans have a son or daughter, fighting on foreign soil & watch their children forced to be deployed over & over again., then the Flag Wavers, will take notice.

That may be the most horrendous solution I have ever heard. Reinstate the draft so the blood price hits closer to home.

It is hard not to be frustrated by this war. It is even harder to think of the lives already lost as a sunk cost.

Obama needs to get off his fund raiser campaign trail and get to work on bringing our troops home. Over 100 of our finest ladies have also died in this so called war against civilians and kids. Stop listening to those generals who are so far in the back lines that would take a long range cruise missile to hit. Put those congressmen on the roads with the troops. Can't happen, because even the generals and colonels don't ride them. Otherwise, why can't Obama remember his campaign promises? Even those small kids over there kill our troops with roadside bombs not counting all those suicide bomb carrying idiots.

This is a war and there will be deaths. Last month in Chicago we had 55 murders and this does not make the news. Something is wrong with the media . I wonder how many have been murdered in the whole USA in one month. It may be safer to go to war

What is hardly ever mentioned is the number of wounded, many of whom end up leg-less. If we consider that approximately ten soldiers are wounded for every one killed. The casualty rate becomes horrific.

And not just the ones physically wounded. A lot of soldiers suffer from PTSD, which requires a lot of therapy and time to deal with, from what I understand.

I spoke to some soldiers a few weeks ago who were home on leave. I was told that the solders over there were being forced to:

Patrol without a round in the chamber - safety on, no clip in sometimes. That may be good for California, but it's not good for soldiers in combat.

Call in for permission to fire back. He told he that he once had to wait for 45 minutes to get permission to return fire. He was jammed into a small doorway in a blasted out building for all of that time, unable to move, while the shooter got closer and closer to him.

Eat: Yep, eat. The soldiers are eating MRE's three meals a day when they can get them, and he said he had been eating cookies for meals for months. It seems that the food supply lines are stretched too thin, and they cannot get food to the soldiers.

We need to get out of Afghanistan. What our president has gotten us into over there is a religious war, and we are getting chewed up.

Hi there. I took a moment and looked at the congressional record. During Desert Storm, the democrats voted 100% to go to war, and the republicans voted the smae with one no vote.

Diring the Iraq war, 100% of the democrats voted to go to war, and all but 8 republicans voted for it.

The information that the war was based on was examined by every memeber of congress, and the votes nearly unanimous. So tell me...

How was this "Bush's war?"
01:22 PM on 08/31/2011
They were Bush wars, but now they're Obama wars as well. Just as Obama inherited the recession which he now bears a responsibility to end, he also has a responsibility to bring our involvement in foreign conflicts to an end.

Thanks obama.

If Obama had stuck to his promise to bring the troops home from Afghanistan by the end of his first year, this wouldn't be the headline..... Way to go Obama

The RICH ones NEED WARS > Weaponry Manufacturing IS very powerfully "profitable"

WAR IS JUST LEGALIZED MURDER; MEN INVENTED IT TO KILL THEIR ENEMIES WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO PRISON. All women around the world need to stand up to the horrors of war. It's barbaric and we should be more civilized that this!! Remember the Bible says: "Thou Shalt Not Kill.

I thought "thou shalt not kill" was a commandment given to Moses from God. Over all it is still good policy. Don't lie, cheat, steal, murder, and take Sunday off.

BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!! THE U.S. CANNOT AFFORD THIS WAR! We're bankrupt for God's sake. It's time to let these people take care of themselves! WAR IS JUST LEGALIZED MURDER. The Bible clearly states: "THOU SHALT NOT KILL".
