Gloria Steinem To Headline Obama Fundraiser In New York City

First Posted: 08/30/11 01:22 PM ET Updated: 10/30/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- First Lady Michelle Obama, longtime feminist activist Gloria Steinem and several other prominent Democratic women will be the featured guests at a fundraiser in New York City next month for President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, in an effort to mobilize and energize Democratic women for 2012.

The Park Avenue fundraiser on Sept. 20 will also feature EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock, Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards and Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.).

Tickets prices start at $500 and go up to $38,500. Mothers and daughters are encouraged to attend together, as well as mentors and mentees.

Steinem's office confirmed to The Huffington Post that she is planning to attend the event. The Obama campaign confirmed that it is the first reelection event Steinem has participated in.

"Women are a really important constituency for us," said an Obama campaign aide. "Their involvement and support was integral in 2008 and we are not taking their support for granted in 2012. The idea behind this fundraiser is engaging women, on a wider scale, to get involved and energized about the political process and the 2012 election."

The fundraiser is not part of the specific "Women for Obama" effort, a grassroots effort to connect with women voters that the campaign will be relaunching for 2012.

Jennifer Lawless, director of the Women and Politics Institute at American University, said Obama needs strong turnout from women in order to win in 2012.

"He needs the women's vote. There's no question," said Lawless. "What's up for grabs right now is the extent to which women are energized and ready to mobilize for him. In every presidential election since 1980, there's been a gender gap with women more likely to support the Democratic candidate than men. Without the women's vote -- because women comprise the majority of the electorate -- it's virtually impossible for a candidate to win the election."

In 2008, an analysis by the Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics found that women were a "significant factor" in Obama's victory. He won 56 percent of women's votes, whereas his opponent, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), won just 43 percent. Men split their vote about evenly between the two candidates.

A recent AP-GfK poll found that less than half of all women approve of the job Obama is doing. That's a significant drop from the 100-day mark of his presidency, when 68 percent of women approved of his performance. Fifty percent now say he deserves reelection.

Women are still more likely than men to approve of his handling of the economy, with 43 percent approving, compared to 29 percent of men.

Steinem -- who is the subject of a new HBO documentary about her life -- was a prominent Hillary Clinton supporter in the 2008 Democratic primary, as were EMILY's List and Wasserman Schultz. All three, however, enthusiastically endorsed Obama when Clinton withdrew.

Planned Parenthood put its support behind Obama in July 2008.

So far, 22 of Clinton's top fundraisers, known as "bundlers," are bundling for the Obama reelection effort. The involvement of Steinem and others in the Obama 2012 effort could help get more Clinton supporters actively involved.

Obama has been beating back Republican attempts to defund Planned Parenthood in recent months. When he took office, he also quickly lifted restrictions on U.S. government funds going to groups that provide abortion services abroad.

Yet at the same time, many pro-choice activists have been dismayed that Obama has included the Hyde Amendment in his budget proposals, a measure that bans federal funds from being used to pay for abortions.

Similarly, pro-choice groups were disappointed when Obama signed an executive order reaffirming the restrictions on federal funding for abortion.

Pro-choice issues aside, Lawless said that like the rest of the electorate, women are being hammered by the tough economic situation and may need extra motivation to get out the vote.

"The status quo is not so great right now. The jobs situation is bad. The economy is bad," said Lawless. "The Obama team has had several incredibly successful legislative successes, but they haven't necessarily communicated those successes the right way. So I think they have to, right off the bat, start energizing everybody, even if the people they're trying to energize are the people who would be their obvious core supporters."

All of these women have become the women's auxiliary of the democratic party. It's pathetic. And they wonder why their organizations are dying.
Well thank God Obama made it possible for women over seas to get abortions. Women are nothing but their reproductive organs after all.

she and the others just joined and very "special" group which includes everyone who voted for Bush in 2004.

It's called "Idiots for Voted for the Re-election of a Pathetic President"

I did have a lot of respect for Gloria Steinem. Key word here is 'did'. She, like the Obamas and Clintons, are followers of Saul Alinsky.

People.......please google Saul and learn how he was not for democracy but for socialist take-over.

Hillary Clinton rejected Alinsky's methods. You know who didn't? Karl Rove didn't.

Yes, Gloria did help women, and now the dems need the women's vote, just like the need the illegals vote. Groups are being pandered to and don't even realize it.

Who was it that said, "We bury you so gently you never know you're dead." I know, but do you?

GOP-TP tactics: Endless repetition of talking points to perpetuate fear, anxiety, insecurity, divisiveness, obstructionism, uncertainty, threats, frustration, prejudice and anger. These do not really seem like a formula for making the US stronger.

Neither does attacking women's rights, worker's rights, senior's rights and endless attempts to block healthcare for those who are not in the top 2.3%. Reasonable people must work to win in 2012.

I am a registered Democrat and I wouldn't cross the street to meet Gloria or Michelle. In a time when people are financially struggling the Dems decide to hold a fund raiser that is expensive and noticably for the wealthy only. Is this what Obama meant by spreading the wealth? Spread the wealth to my cause? I don't need a disrespectul First Lady and Gloria to define me as a woman. The outfit that Michelle wore on the plane to New York was an insult to the American women and the fashion industry. No one with a good self-image and a good-self esteem would wear a multicolored dress, with a boob belt over an open sweater and then further damage the look with orange shoes. Was she sober when she adorned this outfit? How many Democratic women want to be seen in such an outfit? The most important question is, "Why would anyone want to look like that out in Public?"

I am a feminist and have been one for 45 years and my mother and grandmother feminists too, long before the word was coined. but when are we going to realize that these people , Republicans or Democrats, prominent feminists and conservative leaders have very little in common with most Americans and live in avery different America then you and me. They actually have more in common with each other

Even tho I am a femmist I wouldn't be able to walk into Gloria Steinem's apartment building, the door man wouldn't let me in, but Glen Beck's wife could because she belong to the same class as Gloria Steinman.

I doubt I would be let in Jerry Moss's Bev Hills Home Either. Moss is a millinaire
many times over, the owner of the horse Zenyatta, and the owner of a Kentucky
Derby Winner and on the board of the Calif Racing Association. .
However, I was able to chat with him for several times. Why? Because we have
a common interest-horse racing. So your comment may be correct in one
regard..but not necessairy true in terms of a "common interest"

My point is that these wealthy people don't really have a clue how the most of Americans live and it is becoming more and more evident as you see "serious people" talking about what they perceive as important issues which have nothing to do with what's going with the majority of America.

68% of Americans make under 50 thousand dollars a year.

What's your point? Class issues are clouding the real issues. I could not care less where anyone chooses to live, but I do know that Gloria Steinem has a very long track record orf helpng women of all classes and I have no idea what Glen Becks's has ever done....or care.
