Prattsville, New York Underwater From Irene Flooding (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/30/11 01:33 PM ET Updated: 10/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Some areas may have been spared from severe damage by Tropical Storm Irene, but inland areas of New York and Vermont are seeing their worst flooding in decades.

The CNN video below shows the damage caused by Irene in the small town of Prattsville, New York. The Catskills town of just over 300 homes was almost entirely underwater when newscasters arrived.

A state police helicopter was needed to rescue over 20 people stranded in the town yesterday, according to CNN.

The town was flooded when a local creek rose over 15 feet in under 12 hours. Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden told CNN that the rainwater spilling off the Catskills sent a volume of water that was greater than Niagara Falls through Prattsville.

According to the Associated Press, continued flooding on bridges and roads has cutoff at least three towns in New York and “some Vermont rivers still haven't reached their peak.” Flooding in Vermont is the worst in a century.

In Bartonsville, Vermont, strong floodwaters carried away a 141-year-old covered bridge as onlookers watched in shock.

Apocolyptic floods. And where would these people who have built in flood -- and tornado zones for that matter -- rebuild? It seems like the whole country is being rattled. Even NYC with earthquakes. Mother Earth not amused....

Don't build towns in flood plains.
Don't rebuild unless the townspeople pay for it themselves & pay 110% of ALL flood insurance cost forever.

Feeling bad and sad for the people of upstate NY and VT. Everybody thought it would be NYC and LI that got the worse due to the population but these areas were never even discussed for this type of damage.

I wonder if Rush is still saying that the storm was overblown. What an idiot and anybody else who believes what he says.

If you listen to Rush full time for a week, you'll learn you were an idiot prior to that week.

What happened to all the smart guys saying that Irene was just a glorified summer rain storm? 40 people killed by a rain storm. That is amazing. Please refrain from giving us your future weather casts. I hope none of the dead payed any attention to their lambent forecasts.

I feel so sad for all of our fellow American's that have endured all the tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, and destruction by fire in the past few months. We are tough people and a very generous people. We have helped so many different countries in their hour of need and now the tide has turned........there are many here in this country that need help. Does anyone know of any other country that has offered to help our citizens? Perhaps Mexico or any of the European countries etc? I won't suggest Japan because those people have suffered so very much. But I shall remember when another needs help.......my charity donations from here on out will go to Americans only. I have always contributed generously.....I have now learned my lesson.

irene reminds me of another storm that never even made it to Hurricane stage but did enormous damage because of the heavy rainfall as well. Tropical storm Allison killed 40 people and dropped 40 inches of rain. NEVER think a storm system even though it is just a tropical storm or a catagory one hurricane is not very dangerous.
"The storm dropped heavy rainfall along its path, peaking at over 40 inches (1,000 mm) in Texas. The worst flooding occurred in Houston, where most of Allison's damage occurred: 30,000 became homeless after the storm flooded over 70,000 houses and destroyed 2,744 homes. Downtown Houston was inundated with flooding, causing severe damage to hospitals and businesses. Twenty-three people died in Texas. Along its entire path, Allison caused $5.5 billion ($6.7 billion 2008 USD) in damage and 41 deaths. Aside from Texas, the places worst hit were Louisiana and southeastern Pennsylvania."

Question: If this would have happened three years ago, how many times would have CNN mentioned Bushes name. Today though, Obama's name never comes up and it's just another "Run of the Mill" CNN report.

That is probably due to the fact that President Obama was on top of the situation, while Bush never was really on top of anything.

Will these people get the full plate of free FEMA benefits that New Orleans dwellers got? Or will they be denied because it's probably just another cracker white town, they will be told to file insurance claims..keep track of this one "FOLKS"...

Last report I saw from FEMA said they were just about broke!

I live close to the town. Our local tv stations showed more of the destruction and more news coverage. YES, the entire town got both washed away and totally flooded! There are no roads into nor out of the town left either.
To others...please have some compassion for all the areas here in NY state still suffering the aftermath. Many residents in my vicinity won't have power back on til Sunday. Keep them in your prayers please. ty

It's a horrible situation.
Due to idiots not cutting back/down trees near power lines, we lose power for 1-5 days EVERY year.
Don't build, don't rebuild in flood plains.
Force people to cut back/down trees near power lines or make tham pay for rebuilding of lines/poles & the loss their neighbors sustain.
05:25 AM on 08/31/2011
Compassion is definitely needed. Too much vitriol against people who are down for the count. Don't kick a man when he's down, folks, please. It could be you someday.
