Keystone XL Pipeline: Obama Campaign Writer Arrested In TransCanada Protest

Barack Obama Keystone Xl

WASHINGTON -- Among the 500-plus people to get arrested since August 20 for sit-in protests outside the White House is Elijah Zarlin, formerly a senior email writer on the Obama Campaign's new media team that helped propel him to the presidency.

Like many of the 2,000 volunteers who have signed up to participate in the White House sit-ins, Zarlin, who now works as a campaign manager at CREDO Action, is calling on Obama to block approval of TransCanada's Keystone XL. The oil pipeline would run from the Canadian tar sands in Alberta to refineries on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

"He said the rising of the oceans and the warming of the climate was going to slow when he was elected -- that was part of his speech..." said Zarlin, who drafted fundraising emails sent out under the names of Obama, David Plouffe and others. "It's disappointing to me that he might approve this."

The White House has emphasized that fate of the Keystone XL will be decided by the State Department, which is expected to complete its review of the pipeline by the end of the year. But activists are holding Obama -- not Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and not lawmakers on Capitol Hill -- accountable.

Author and environmentalist Bill McKibben told HuffPost in an interview last week that his fellow protesters "spent a lot of time talking about how one of the last times many of us had been sleeping on the floor was when we'd been out campaigning for Obama, and how much we hoped that he would do something to remind us why we were so enthusiastic." McKibben spent two nights in jail after being arrested on Aug. 20 for civil disobedience. "This time [Obama] has a clear shot to do it. We'll see."

A State Department review released on Friday found the pipeline would have "no significant impact" on the environment, and suggested the project move forward. In an interview over the weekend, David L. Goldwyn, a former State Department official, said Clinton would likely approve the proposed pipeline.

"We hope that as wave after wave of these people line up to get arrested -- you know, that’s no small thing! -- that he’ll realize that these are his people, the people who helped get him where he is and the people that he needs to get another term," said Zarlin. "Obviously I would hope that he would do it not to be reelected, but because it’s the right thing to do. It’s still up to him and I’m still very hopeful. I don’t know that I’m optimistic, but I’m hopeful that he’ll make the right choice."

OBAMA 2012!!!

Now that he has an official record, this guy will fit in rather well with Mr. Obama's den of tax cheats, domestic terrorists, convicted felons, avowed socialists and racists! But he needs to get a much more serious offense if he wants one of the chairs near the President.

Oh please.

He doesn't really have all that many Republicans in his Administration.

"There will be NO lobbyists in a Barack Obama administration, not one"

--B.H. Obama, on over two dozen campaign stops in 2007/08, while speaking of the stranglehold of DC by special interests and lobbyists.

Instead, Mr. Obama then appointed 14 former lobbyists to high-ranking, policy-making posts in his administration.

Outright liar Obama.

And Lo , Obama raised his staff , and the seas parted. !!!

Obama's naive comments before his election were actually taken seriously by anyone ?

I have a bridge to sell you !

The Pipeline will be approved , because it's simple common sense.

Obama lied to all of us. not just you, Elijah Zarlin.

And yet and still - he's still the best politician around. Who else is there to choose from? Rick Perry? He's Bush-part-duex, only he's not quite as smart (2.8 gpa). Palin? Well, she likes to sleep with black guys. Case closed. We might as well keep the smart, capable and visionary brother we've got. OBAMA 2012

Smart Definitely, Capable? Yeah, with an ability to lie better than any politician or sociopath I've ever seen? Visionary? Hell yeah, now we have 'advisors' going into oil rich Uganda.

Whatta guy. Whatta keeper.

We were all set up. And a lot of us have felt that way since his speech at the Democratic Convention in 2004.

I wonder if we can compost the Tar Sands with a bacteria slurry mix and convert the mess into Natural Gas which would be way easier to move through a pipeline or by truck in concentrated form ?

It must be terribly disappointing to have supported Obama's 2008 campaign and some of his early projects and then realize that he has thrown those projects AND the folks like Zarlin under the bus as Obama worked to bring the Republicans in to his camp, albeit, fruitlessly. To declare that the Keystone XL pipeline would not have any negative environment effects only means they have managed to bring in tons more sand for the present administration to hide their heads in. A president with a much larger dream would realize that fossil fuels of any sort, anywhere, are not the future and would be working on other sources of energy. There is no presidential candidate or president in sight such as that.

Not being reported anywhere….new leak near deepwater horizon getting worse.
http://www.examiner.com/environmental-news-in-tallahassee/new-leak-near-deepwater-horizon-site-quickly-becoming-a-massive-oil-slick

"Over the past two weeks, I have been closely following reports of renewed leaking in the Macondo oil field, the site of last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster (Map). First, New Orleans Lawyer Stuart Smith reported that nearly 40 ships were hired by BP to conduct a boom-laying mission over the August 13th weekend. Next, nonprofit organizations On Wings of Care and Gulf Restoration Network conducted a joint flyover of the spill site, bringing back photographic evidence of fresh oil near the site of the Macondo well. This in turn prompted reporters from the Mobile Press-Register to hire a boat out to the site, where they found massive "globules" of oil rising to the surface, creating a growing sheen on the water (you can read about that here).

Today, pilot Bonny Schumaker of On Wings of Care once again took to the air over the Gulf of Mexico, finding evidence of what appears to be a massive leak near the site of last year's drilling disaster."

You note that "there appears to be a massive leak near the site of last years drilling disaster".
What do you mean by "near"? Within 100 yards? Or within 1 miles? Or within 5-8 miles? I wish peaple would more specific when they write an artical. You also say that the leak is in the Macondo oil field, how many square miles does the oil field cover? 1, 5, 10 100 or 500 sq miles?

I read that online somewhere so not sure it isn't being reported but "near the site" is good enough for me. If they aren't reporting it widely it is because of embarrassment and because they don't know how to "fix it".

Since BP is the one hiring the 40 ships to lay booms…I think it is safe to say where the problem is coming from.

Sure Obama will approve the Keystone debacle, he needs money for his reelection campaign. To hell with the environment, the next president can take care of that !
And that is exactly why the US is going down the drain, slowly but surely !

Mr. Zarlin believed in all the hype that was about change when he wrote for this Administration just like so many others. What he didn't realize was the change he would see did not follow his own dreams in how this country should be taken care of. Happens every election. Someone works hard to get a person elected and has great hopes about what they are told, then Poof reality pops up it's little head. All smoke and mirrors.

Putting politics aside and whose watch this is under, pipelines work. Think if pipelines can be built into areas that always flood and bring water to areas that are draught prone.
