Obama Tackles Unemployment, Veterans Benefits, Honors '9/11 Generation'

Obama Veterans Benefits Unemployment

JULIE PACE   08/30/11 02:28 PM ET   AP

MINNEAPOLIS — Recalling "those awful attacks," President Barack Obama saluted the 9/11 generation of veterans Tuesday and publicly relished the prospect of U.S. forces getting out of both Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They have borne an extraordinary burden, with more than 2 million of our service members deploying to the war zones," Obama said. "Hundreds of thousands have deployed again and again, year after year. Never before has our nation asked so much of our all-volunteer force – that 1 percent of Americans who wears the uniform."

Speaking before thousands of veterans and their families attending the American Legion's annual convention, Obama said the Americans who have worn the uniform since Sept. 11 have put the nation in a position of strength and have earned their place among the greatest of generations.

"Every day for the past 10 years, these men and women have succeeded together as one American team," Obama said.

Following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. launched wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; more than 6,200 American troops have been killed and tens of thousands wounded.

Since taking office, Obama has set a course for drawing down both wars after a decade of continuous conflict. All U.S. troops are set to leave Iraq by the end of this year, though the Iraqis could still request that some American troops stay. And in Afghanistan, the 33,000 surge forces Obama deployed in late 2009 are set to come home by the end of next summer, with the U.S. aiming to transfer the lead security role to Afghan forces by 2014, leaving remaining U.S. forces in a support role.

"For our troops and military families who have sacrificed so much, this means relief from an unrelenting decade of operations," Obama said.

Still, the president spoke of ending, not of winning, the Afghanistan war. "As our mission transitions from combat to support, Afghans will take responsibility for their own security, and the longest war in American history will come to a responsible end," he said.

Even as Obama spoke, an Associated Press tally showed that August has become the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, where international forces have started to go home and have left Afghan forces to take charge of securing their country.

A record 66 U.S. troops have died so far this month, more than the 65 killed in July 2010. This month's death toll soared when 30 Americans – most of them elite Navy SEALs – were killed in a helicopter crash Aug. 6.

Obama said the nation's commitment to service members must continue after they return home. He outlined steps his administration has taken to combat homelessness among veterans and support wounded warriors, especially those with traumatic brain injuries.

Despite pressure for Washington to slash its debt and deficits, Obama pledged to protect programs that assist veterans from looming budget cuts.

"We cannot, will not, and we must not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans," Obama said.

The president also acknowledged that the shaky economy means veterans face uncertain employment prospects when they return home. He highlighted initiatives he proposed earlier this summer that would create new training programs for veterans and give tax credits to companies that hire service members.

The White House has said 1 million military veterans are unemployed. Among those who joined the military after the Sept. 11 attacks, the unemployment rate was 13.3 percent as of June.

The nationwide unemployment rate is 9.1 percent.

Getting more veterans to work was high on the minds of those attending the convention.

"We do feel like veterans should have priority because of their service to their country," said Eddie Price, an 86-year-old World War II veteran from Wilson, N.C. "Almost every state, they tell me the veteran unemployment is higher than the regular unemployment. That doesn't seem right."

"Still, the president spoke of ending, not of winning, the Afghanistan war." How does one "win" a war in this day and age? It was/is a "War on Terrorism". How do we measure a win against terrorism? From what is currently being broadcasted around the world, Terrorism still exists and not just in Iraq or Afghanistan. War is horrific and devastating for everyone involved. But for our Military Men and Women, the devastating effects of war can last a lifetime.

Programs that are created to assist Veterans in every which way possible (jobs, housing, mental health, etc.) are absolutely necessary and well beyond deserved. The Obama ADMINISTRATION (and I emphasize the "Administration" part) had to clean up a lot of messes from previous administrations when it came to the "War on Terrorism" and our treatment of military personnel returning from combat zones. I still believe in change, I just understand that change takes time. And in an age of instant gratification, every politician would appear as though they weren't doing enough to help our Veterans.

J, we did win.....osama and his likes have been the only targets in Afghanistan. We got him! Lets get out of there. Out troops do not belong there any longer. What we need there is a operational quarry to gut the country of it's natural resources like we do every where else we show up. Don't you remember the WP/HP/NYT reporting on a huge deposit of minerals discovered in AFghanistan? That's what we'll go after next.

It's disconserting that the people who think the President is doing to much for the Vets are the ones who have never joined or been part of the military. It's disgusting that any of you would have he nerve to post against our best and brightest. Until that day that any of you put on a military uniform and start catching bullets you should do what smart people do and stay out of it. The Veterans Administration is not at fault here and niether is the President. It's all of you who have never given and only have taken from we the nondisabled, disabled, mia, and dead veterans of all the wars. Intellafran really disturbing.

It seems you are ina boat that most aren't. You have health care and 19 million citizens in the US do not. Quit complaining.

Quit complaining? WHose complaining. I served my country for the greater good. What have you done? My disbility is service connected as well as the thousands who were injured in one big illegal war! Now it appears you don't want to give the veterans what YOU have promised them. I ask again noIntellafran.....what have YOU done for the greater good?

the stimulus money if you remember was the first part of a three part package. That money was used to keep teachers, policemen and firemen on the job. Money also given to banks to lend...but they kept there's and gave it to themselves in the form of huge bonuses'. Then ofcourse we have Rick Perry who took his stimulus money and used a good portion of it to pay down his debt and steal jobs and workers fromother states whie making sure low wages and low expctations are held up as an honorable beginning to debt relief. How pathetic.

AN EASY CALL . . . . Obama will present his September Jobs Announcement on national TV and then, once again, hit the campaign trail until Thanksgiving . . . which will result in hitting the golf course due to becoming shopworn as a result of over promising and under delivering.

PREDICTION: Obama will retire in the golfing community situated near Jeremiah Wright.

pathetic post...but hey if you look throgh Boehner eyes(drunk)then I would suppose you could blame everything on the one thing you hate the most. That being Obama. Now if you had any ambition maybe instead of sitting htere in tht big ball of hate you can go run for office or join the military....something for the greater good. When you do that then you have a right to voice an opinion on an article about Veterans and what the government wants to do to help them.

Ok I have a suggestion stop giving thousands and what I am sure is millions of dollars who did not earn it. Every year I help prepare taxes for folks who get every penny they paid in taxes back plus thousand of dollars in EITC. WTHeck. Do you know how many people come into the tax office bitching and whining because they didn't get as much EIC as they wanted or trying to claim every brothers sisters kid so they can get more EITC. Millions could be saved by elimating this tax break. I love getting that extra money, but if we didn't I would understand. Of course how sad is it that my husband has given 24yrs of his life to the USAF and still he makes so little we qualify for EITC. Show how little we pay that 1percent who will die for us.
03:53 AM on 08/31/2011
What is "EITC"? I'd like to know so I can get mine.

I suppose if you have to ask, you don't qualify for it.

Earned income tax credit.

Democrats and President Obama consistently get much higher grades than do the Republicans from veterans' groups, like the Disabled American Veterans and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Democrats and President Obama consistently get A's and B's, while Republicans consistently get D's and F's.

"... Federal pay continues to rise even though Obama says he froze pay."

'"We froze federal pay for federal workers for two years,” Obama claimed.'"

"But even federal workers acknowledged at the time that salaries would not be frozen under the plan."

"In fact, under the measure the president dubbed a “freeze,” the Federal Times estimated that 1.1 million federal employees will receive pay bumps totaling more than $2.5 billion in additional salary through the standard “step increases” federal pay system."

I think I'm shocked! No, wait. It's just gas.

"He can take credit for Freezing Disabled Federal Employee pay and Disabled Veterans benefits. Those he did actually freeze."

Hosing the disabled; his mother must be SO proud.

The Obama administration said he froze Cost of Living increases because the cost of living hasn’t gone up."

Oh, really? He has GOT to stop snorting that pixie dust.

"This should show how out of touch Obama is with the real world. No one on disability is paying the same or less than two years ago."

"He can also take credit for freezing social security while Democrats point fingers at Republicans for wanting to throw grandma off the cliff."

01:40 AM on 08/31/2011
What is "Disabled Federal Employee Pay"? As a former Federal Employee, Daughter of a Federal Employee, and sister of a Federal Employee, I can tell you for a FACT that there is NO SUCH CATEGORY! A Federal Employee is a Federal Employee is a Federal Employee! Once hired, all are classified the same! Vets and the disabled get extra points in the hiring process, but that's ALL! Step increases and base pay has NOT increased! You don't know what you're talking about!
11:03 PM on 08/31/2011
I may not know what I am talking about when it comes to many things but I actually read the article that I linked in my comment. Furthermore, "I" didn't say it, whoever wrote the article linked in my comment (they didn't give a by line) said it.

I don't know for sure but what they meant by "Disabled Federal Employee" may be former federal employees who became disabled due to their work as a federal employee.

Yes, veterans and disabled veterans do get extra hiring points when applying for jobs with the state and/or federal governments. I haven't applied for such jobs in a while but when I did, veterans got an additional 5 points and disabled veterans got an additional 10 points. Other than that the only "perks" that veterans got were that they could claim their time in service towards time necessary for full retirement benefits.

As a Republican (Wendall Wilkie variety) I have to admit that President Obama-who I did not vote for-is on the right track of bringing these wars to a close. It reminds me of the smart way it was done when President Nixon was in office and how his outstanding Secretary of Defense, Melvin Laird, started to accomplish what most people thought couldn't be done in Vietnam.

It is time to slowly and cautiously bring our troops back home and let the countries we protected for a decade while teaching their soldiers to carry the fight-to do exactly that. Enough American deaths and now we have to really look long hard at how we will treat our Finest when they all return. Their health is primary along with employment. Say what we may about this President, and I may vehemently disagree with some of this President's policies, but as a veteran myself, who sincerely cares about our Military and is acutely aware of the great sacrifices borne by them for our very freedoms that we enjoy today, believe wholeheartedly that we must do anything and everything to get these brave Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and other smaller branches who sacrificed greatly in this war back on their feet again-in a big way!

12:30 AM on 08/31/2011
"Obama pledged to protect programs that assist veterans from looming budget cuts."

Uh huh. In March 2009, our he explored a proposal to save $540 million by billing vet's private insurance for the cost of treating SERVICE CONNECTED injuries. Ignoring the fact that most such medical issues would limit or preclude vets from getting decent insurance in the first place. When the outrage started he and his lackeys backed off.

"We cannot, will not, and we must not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans."

TOO LATE!

In another move to "support" veterans, in 2010 the great and powerful OB froze COLA increases for VA disability benefits. The cherry on top came a little later, specifically there would be no COLA bump for an additional 2 years. 3 years so far but if this hypocritical hack gets reelected ...

Of course, "[He] supported a one-time $250-payment to [ ]military-connected recipients."

WONDERFUL! $250 instead of (a ball-park estimate of) $600 per annum or $1200 in 3 years.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

Oh, wait. There's no one there.

"He highlighted initiatives he proposed earlier this summer that would create new training programs for veterans and give tax credits to companies that hire service members."

Training programs and tax credits won't do anyone any good, if there are no jobs in the first place. Just more of the bait and switch paradigm.

I'd rather trust ruby slippers.

President Obama proposed $120 million in new tax credits for businesses that hire U.S. veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan at a time of stubbornly high unemployment at home.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/05/us-usa-economy-military-idUSTRE7740I920110805

Posted on Thursday, March 10, 2011

WASHINGTON — Top Senate Democrats raised loud objections Thursday to a plan by Republicans in the House of Representatives that they said would eliminate 10,000 housing vouchers for homeless veterans this year, an effort to save $75 million from the 2011 federal budget.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2011/03/10/110139/homeless-veterans-could-lose-10000.html

But as administration officials made clear at the time, there was no proposal to force veterans to pay for treatment for their own injuries, or to make them buy private insurance if they did not already have it. In fact, administration officials told FactCheck.org at the time that their proposal would have no financial impact on veterans at all.

"The idea … would result in no additional out-of-pocket costs to veterans even when their private insurance plans require deductibles before benefits are paid," one official told us in an exchange of e-mails.

As I said, tax credits for hiring vets don't mean much when there isn't any work for them to be hired for. Of course, if they're never used, Saint Obama would look even more saintly for his help and support of veterans and it wouldn't cost a dime.

If, as has been stated elsewhere, those vouchers go unclaimed there's no reason to keep them. Why tie that money up for homeless vets if it is not used.

Although it might be more cost effective to reopen the myriad of military and VA facilities that have been mothballed and closed down as housing for homeless vets. At least, the baracks and other residential buildings could be utilized, such would be similar to the domicilaries that some Va facilities have.

As for your attempt to put words in my fingers about the 2009 furor that stated that Obama wanted to make vets pay for their own injuries;
1. I said nothing about it. YOU brought that up, perhaps in an attempt to make it
look as if I, or someone else, was making up stories to discredit O.

2. I referenced a CURRENT non-Huff article about his ACTUAL hosing of the
disabled and the huge voting block of elderly on Social Security while still
indicting the Reps for it when they weren't guilty.

3. You made no attempt to respond to, let alone refute, my primary point namely
that he's bending the vets over once again.

Okay so when they send you your disability check I just bet you send it right back to the government.........oh maybe we should ask if you have ever served?
11:49 PM on 08/31/2011
I served.

I don't send my check back. Why should I? All of my disabilities, which have worsened over time, are directly due to my service.

Upon discharge, I was rated as 10% disabled & worked at least 3 jobs at a time while attending college. During summers, I worked construction as a concrete worker & hod carrier. The first two years I was in college I managed to finish two semesters (12 credit hours) each summer while working construction. I graduated with 2 bachelors degrees and became a child protection social worker.

Eventually, I chose to go back to construction. I did that for it 15 years, ultimately becoming a construction superintendent and contractor. However, after a while my VA care providers decided I am no longer able to work. Though I had fought it for years, it became apparent that it was no longer possible or safe for me to continue in the work force.

The VA has rated me as "totally and permanently disabled" due to permanent physical damage, chronic pain as well as a right nifty collection of mental health disabilities including PTSD. BTW, after paying into it for 25+ years, I have been repeatedly denied SSDI.

I started working for pay when I was 10 and, counting summers while in grade and high school, I was NEVER unemployed until 2002. I LOVED working, particularly in construction, and would forego my disability benefits and go back to building if it were at all possible.

So, bite
