Tea Party Support Fuels Rick Perry's Poll Surge

Rick Perry Polls

First Posted: 08/30/11 06:20 PM ET Updated: 10/30/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- A new poll out Tuesday from CNN and ORC International shows Texas Gov. Rick Perry leading the field of candidates vying for the 2012 Republican nomination, confirming the trend shown on four more surveys in recent weeks. But a look past the horse race numbers shows that the real battle is yet to come.

Recent polls show Perry's surge coming mostly from the Tea Party, which was found by Pew Research Center surveys to be the Republican faction most engaged in the election. While that group will be critical, the underlying data shows Republican voters are still considering their choices. The crucial question is whether Perry or any other candidate can gain majority support and unite the Republican party.

The latest poll from CNN largely confirms results reported last week by Gallup. Both show that Rick Perry has emerged as the current favorite of Republicans, but indicate much higher support for Perry among Tea Party Republicans.

2011-08-30-Blumenthal-GallupCNNGOPPreference.png

A new Pew Research Center survey, also conducted in late August, presents a more nuanced view of the current state of Republican decision making, because the survey separated questions about respondents' familiarity with and willingness to support each candidate. On name recognition, Tea Party supporters were generally more likely to have heard of the lesser know candidates.

2011-08-30-Blumenthal-PewRecognition2.png

The Pew Research poll then asked about respondents' willingness to support each candidate. Again, Perry scores best among Tea Party Republicans in terms of hard-core support. Forty-two percent of Republicans who agree with the Tea Party say there is a "good chance" they will support Perry, although both Michelle Bachmann (37 percent) and even Sarah Palin (31 percent) are not far behind. The total number of "good chance" responses adds up to 235 percent, so many Tea Party Republicans are clearly still considering which candidate they may ultimately support.

2011-08-30-Blumenthal-PewResearchTeaParty.png

While Mitt Romney gets a lower "good chance" of support score (28 percent) among Tea Party Republicans, he does much better (75 percent) in terms of the total who say there is either a "good chance" or "some chance " they will support him. That combined score is slightly better than that received by both Perry (74 percent) and Bachmann (73 percent). So although Romney may not be the first choice among Tea Party Republicans, most are still open to supporting him.

The numbers are very different among Republicans who do not agree with the Tea Party. Potential support for all of the candidates is lower, partly because these voters are less familiar with most of the candidates. Romney ranks first on two measures -- those who say there is a "good chance" they will support him (24 percent) and those who say there is at least "some chance" they will support him (65 percent). Perry trails on both measures among non-Tea Party supporters, but much of the difference has to do with his lower name recognition.

2011-08-30-Blumenthal-PewResarchNoTeaParty.png

The Tea Party is not just a minor Republican faction. Recent surveys by the Pew Research Center found that Republicans who "agree with the Tea Party movement" (typically 40 to 50 percent of Republicans surveyed) are the "the most engaged and committed segment of the Republican base." In its July survey, Pew Research found that Tea Party supporters were more likely than other Republicans to say they have given a lot of thought to the 2012 election (44 percent versus 18 percent), are following news about the 2012 candidates very closely (36 percent versus 16 percent) and are very likely to vote in the Republican primary (83 percent versus 69 percent).

2011-08-29-Blumenthal-PewTeaPartyEngagement.png

So Rick Perry has emerged as the leader with the portion of the Republican party most likely to vote or participate in party caucuses.

But as the Pew Research findings demonstrate, the initial preferences expressed by Republicans on polls are not yet final decisions. Yes, Rick Perry has surged, especially among Tea Party Republicans, and is well positioned to dominate that wing of the party. However, other candidates -- especially Sarah Palin -- may still enter the race, Perry has not yet participated in a campaign debate and the initial “invisible primary” for endorsements and campaign cash is still very much underway.

The bigger issue is that the ultimate nominee will need to unite enough of the Republican party to win a majority of convention delegates, and no candidate has yet received anything close to that level of support on traditional poll measures. Rick Perry has an advantage for the moment, but we still have a long way to go.

Government Pensions are underfunded by TRILLIONS! Doesn't anyone have a stand on pension reform, or are they just too chicken to bring it up?

Can someone please tell me what Rick Perry's experience has been OUTSIDE OF the USA... possibly even outside of Texas and what his knowledge is with regards to that??.

The Rest of the World does not want another unsophisticated, ignorant-of-anything-outside-the-US president. The world is much too volatile for that kind of nonsense.

The federal government is like a giant sump pump – pulling dollars out of liberal enclaves like California, New York, Massachusetts, and Oregon – and sending them to conservative places like Montana, Idaho, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Old South.

As a practical matter, then, Rick Perry’s fight to save America from Washington is really a secret plan to save blue states from red states.

Perry, it turns out, is a closet liberal.

If the rich were going to "create jobs," they would already be doing it. They already HAVE plenty of money to do it with. They're not just sitting around, saying "Gee I need that tax-cut so I can go out and create jobs."

But they CAN'T just create jobs because there is a lack of consumer demand. And they can't change that. It takes government stimulus to do that. Just like the fantastically successful public works programs did in the 1930s. Let's do that, and let's do that NOW.

Yes, increasing consumer demand is probably our only way out of this mess.

But instead of trying to do that, Washington is going the opposite direction, arguing over whether to enact massive spending cuts, or super-massive spending cuts.

To the righties that endlessly blame Obama for the ever-increasing DEBT, remember these?

(A) unfunded wars (Bush)
(B) unfunded tax cuts (Bush)
(C) lengthy recession, ca. 2007 (Bush)
(D) deregulated financial markets (Bush)

As for Obama, and claims of his "Obamacare" bankrupting the country:

Nothing happens for three more years. How does a FUTURE health care program affect present-day economics? Are Republicans in some sort of time warp?

In a letter dated 4/6/93 Perry wrote to Clinton, “I think your efforts in trying to reform the nation’s health care system are most commendable."

In an LA Times report from 4/5/93, the plan was designed to:
* Guarantee a uniform package of basic benefits be available to everyone, although not all the uninsured will get this coverage right away. Among the basic benefits would be hospital & doctor services, including mental health care, & some prescription drug coverage.
* Create a standardized insurance form & bar insurers from refusing to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions.
* Impose a price freeze on private-sector medical providers while the system of cooperatives is phased in, a process that could take 3-5 years.
* Phase in a requirement for employers to provide workers with health insurance, with government subsidies to help smaller businesses.

What does it mean to be a middle class wage-earner and consumer in Texas?

For too many families, it means a struggle. Much has been made lately about job growth in Texas. For for middle class Texans, the so-called “Texas Miracle” has been more myth than reality.

How about those jobs? Texas has the highest rate of workers paid at or below the federal minimum wage and our median hourly wage is 10% lower than the national average. Dead last in the percent of individuals with health insurance and near the bottom in the percent of workers with employer-based health insurance.

9 Texans die on the job every week, making Texas the deadliest state to work in, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. As a percentage of workers, we also have the highest rate of workplace fatalities among the 10 biggest states. Also, we are last in workers’ compensation coverage, lagging far behind the rest of the country.

Home ownership? Texas ranks near the bottom in the rate of home ownership, and a high rate of subprime mortgages. The highest home insurance rates in the nation.

Comfortable retirement? Texas ranks near the bottom in median household net worth and personal savings and investing behavior. Nearly half of middle income Texans report having less than $5,000 in total savings – over a quarter have less than $1,000.00.

jobs were filled by illegal immagrants. Middle class is different per area in each state. One can not take the total and average per household. ( erxample: one person is jobless with absolutly zero income and zero social program assistanc. one person happens to earn $ 9,000 per year and one person is a ceo earning $ 1,000,000. GUESS WHAT THE PERSON THAT EARNS ZERO INCOME APPEARS ON REPORTS AS EARNING OVER $ 336,000 A YEAR. wow!
That is averaging for you. But in texas the middle class is those earning 50,000 to 70,000

So...let me get this straight...the tea party is backing the guy (Perry) who ran Al Gore's campaign and praised Hillary Clinton's healtcare plan.

Really?

True Republicans and conservatives better find a way to shake off the tea party or they are doomed to losing elections. Perry is as phony as they come.

I am loving these ultra left comments!!! Our country in the past there years has racked up more debt than Bush did in 8 years. Guess what? You can't blame that one on Bush. By no means am I claiming that Bush was a good president, he pushed us to the edge. Now Obama is spending money that we don't have like it's going out of style, and for what?! Is our economy better than it was when Bush left it? Do we have a lower unemployment? NOPE!
06:55 PM on 08/31/2011
Well I am an independant I did the research and voted Bush. I do not think he was the greatest prez ever but I did feel safer with him in charge. do I feel safe with obama in charge...yes sorta there is a lot of Bush programs still there that he has not wiped out yet. To bad Obama is going to fight Carter for bottom feeder. I think if he had some more experience befor being nominated and elected he could have been better.

Sorry let me rephrase, Bush debt in 8 years 3.8 trillion, Obama in 3 years over 4 trillion. So if this keeps going for another 5 years where will the debt be? I don't know about all that liberal book learnin' but it looks like Obama is on track to add 10 trillion at least to our national debt, which would double it from when he started.

Now I knew I threw a lot of tough math at you, but do you think he will blame Bush when our economy crashes again? Maybe we should all deal with our problems the same way our fearless leader does.......... Blame it on someone else and go on vacation.

Ricky Bobby, when you make up your budget shortfall with federal stimulus funds, I'd say it's pretty disingenous to say that you balanced your budget. If you can balance your budget, and don't take in more money than you pay, I'd say that is balancing your budget.
06:19 PM on 08/31/2011
Here is a good way to balance your budget. My husband and I have tried it at home!
Here is what Obama has done for the US. $4,247,000,000,000 more in debt in just 945 days. That's the fastest increase under any president ever.

If you take a lease on a property and find out that the previous tenant left repairs undone, trashed part of the place and created a lot of ill will with the neighbours, it's going to cost you more money and work than anticipated, isn't it?
