NBC-Politico Debate Time In Flux After Obama-Boehner Rift (UPDATE)

Gop Debate

First Posted: 08/31/11 07:12 PM ET Updated: 10/31/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK -- NBC and Politico will co-host a Republican presidential debate on Sept. 7, shortly after President Obama addresses a joint session of Congress on jobs and the economy -- or, depending on the timing for Obama's speech, maybe a day before instead. (Update: With Obama now moving his speech to Sept. 8, the debate will presumably air as planned at 8 p.m. on Wednesday).

It's unclear because the White House, House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) office, debate planners and television executives remain entangled in scheduling mess that began after Obama requested to speak before Congress at the same time as Republican candidates were scheduled to hit the stage at the Reagan Library.

Following Obama's request on Wednesday morning, an NBC spokeswoman confirmed that the debate -- which airs on MSNBC -- would still take place on Sept. 7. While the date wasn't changing, the network didn't say whether or not the start time might get pushed back.

But Politico editor-in-chief John Harris, who’s co-moderating the debate with NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, told The Huffington Post in the early afternoon that the debate's start time would be "adjusted slightly" until after Obama's done in Washington, D.C. (On MSNBC's "Hardball," Harris wouldn't commit to a specific start time: "I’m not really clear on precisely what the logistics will be," he said.)

Harris and others involved may not be clear on the start time, but Harris is convinced of the debate's importance in the election cycle. "This is effectively the first general election debate of the 2012 cycle," he said.

An NBC spokesperson similarly noted the benefits of two major political events taking place on the same night (without confirming any possible time change). "We are thrilled that we now have a terrific opportunity to hear from national leaders of both major parties about the most pressing domestic issues facing the country," the spokesperson said.

So for a while, it looked like Obama would get to have his say at 8 p.m., followed by those hoping to unseat him. But then House Speaker John Boehner turned down the president's request and urged him to give the joint session speech on Sept. 8.

NBC and Politico originally planned to co-host the debate last May, but there were still few confirmed GOP candidates. They first postponed the debate until Sept. 14 before moving it up a week to Sept. 7.

Press Secretary Jay Carney fielded several questions about the date selection in the briefing room and repeatedly said they did not pick Sept. 7 in an attempt to upstage the GOP contenders.

"There were a lot of considerations that once you decide you want to do a speech to Congress, and you have to deal with Congressional schedules and there are many other factors here," Carney said. "And obviously one debate of many that’s on one channel of many was not enough reason not to have the speech at the time that we decided to have it."

Later, Carney said that "whatever the competing opportunities on television are, whether it's the wildlife channel or the cooking channel or political," before being cut-off with a question about whether he's making a specific comparison to Republicans. “Maybe the wildlife," he joked.

Still, there's another specific "competing opportunity on television" taking place next week that could add to the scheduling conflict: The Saints and Packerssquare off Sept. 8 in the NFL season opener.

Hypocrisy is prevalent in BOTH parties!

Obama’s re-election chances depend on painting the Republicans as disrespectful. So why would the White House act disrespectful by scheduling a speech to a joint session of Congress at the exact time when the Republicans already had a debate planned?

Interestingly, if the President had planned on having the speech the day after the debates in the first place, the teapublicans would have cried foul and accused Obama of playing politics. By doing this, the teapublicans will look foolish by triyng to accuse him of political grandstanding. Of course, looking foolish has never stopped them from doing dumb things.

People are saying the president caved. With everything going on around the world and the problems within the United States do you really want to see the president get in a rift over something like a date? The speaker knows what he did was wrong and he should be called out on it but the problems at hand are much bigger than something like this.

The speaker says no once again. He is writing his own history. History will remember the Obama Presidency and it will also remember the GOP. When it come to Civil rights history people remember Martin L. King and Bull Conner...History will remember President Obama and John Boehner to a lessor extreme but Boehner will be remembered for the total disrespect for the office of the President. Yes it will make a difference that the President is a man of color.

The name Boehner will be remembered for generations. Not Limbaugh, or Hannity, or at this moment Cantor or McConnell or any of the others. It's all on John Boehner The Speaker Of The House..

Well, at least we won't be wanting for the laugh entertainment value on the 7th. Should we laugh at the debate or weep on POTUS job front speech? Tough choice that.

These silly rabbits. The President planned this the entire time.

What better audience than to have the tube one hour before the NFL kickoff season game - and between two very well liked teams?

They "got had" - again.

So the sponsoring stations were more than willing to move the time for theprsidnt to speak, but Mr.B. the arrogant said no ?? Well now we know exactly why it wasput off and it wasn't because of a time conflict..the repub/tp did not want him pseaking on the same night..what were they afraid of..it is not like very many ar going to watch this blustering fools and their religous rhetoric..or if they it would for entertainment value only.,the comedians are going to have a field day after this debate..more material and don't even have to amke it up..

Yep. The Republicans are REALLY putting a LOT OF PRESSURE on RICK PERRY. He's going to have the whole country watching to see what's so SPECIAL about him participating in the debate that Boehner could not accommodate the President's request to speak.

PERRY's gonna have to VERY, VERY GOOD. Tough call for him.

Wouldn't it have been nice if Boehner had accomodated the President's request? They could have moved the time, and the Republican candidates could have discussed Obama's speech during their debate, i.e., ripped it to shreds. It would have shown mature reasonable men looking out for the good of the country, instead it shows playground politics.

I understand 44's aversion to crassness. It is one of the many traits of civility, dignity, and yes even intelligence that it appears many do not respect nor share. A self aware man finds some things not worth attacking especially with the problems facing Americans today. A point that should have not been lost on NBC. This is a statement about priorities and we see once again whose in charge. Not to be confused with who can act out, the President is bound by procedure to ask for a joint session and to speak to them but not to the American Public. Those interested in a pre-early GOP debate could watch, Boehner can account for this gridlock later. Remember this tackless public airing is intentional and sickening! The talking heads are having a field day. Pettiness is not the battle President Obama would take up. He keeps his head when all about him seems to have lost their minds. None of the GOP behavior is shocking; it is expected. There is a tinge of ugly familiarity about this congress. Another freedom on the auction block, another foot on the necks of workers, a dark passage of sorts for all the immigrant descendants who populate these shores. Disrespectful yes, a hostile take over for sure, an unmistakable crime against the state of the union maybe. Albeit predictable wrong! NBC should not air this pre-early faux debate. Debate WHAT WHOM?

Obama might lose some to the football kickoff, but now he has a chance to hit back at all rhetoric and (mis) facts from the debate. The media will be analyzing every word, every nuance from each and every participant of both camps......... for the entire weekend. Unless you are deaf, dumb and blind, there will be no escaping it. Let the games begin!!!!
