Firefighter Cancer Tied To Ground Zero Exposure, New Study Says

Cancer Ground Zero

Firefighters who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, selflessly exposing themselves to the toxic dust that clouded Ground Zero, were 19 percent more likely to develop cancer over the subsequent seven years compared to their unexposed colleagues, according to new research conducted by the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY).

"The study clearly shows that World Trade Center exposure in these firefighters led to an increase in all types of cancer," said David Prezant, FDNY chief medical officer and one of the co-authors of the study published Thursday in The Lancet. "But this is not an epidemic -- thank God."

Cancer is not currently among the conditions covered by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which was signed into law in January to provide health care and compensation for New Yorkers sickened by the dust from the World Trade Center attacks. Over 50,000 workers were exposed while responding to the incident as they rescued survivors, recovered victims, and cleaned or cleared the site and surrounding buildings.

The findings from the largest post-9/11 study of cancer don't come as news to many people who have been closely following the issue, including Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), who co-sponsored the Zadroga Act. "Sadly, I'm not surprised by the Lancet study," Rep. Maloney told The Huffington Post in an email. "The doctors who have been treating 9/11 responders and survivors have told me for years that they expect to see cancers caused by Ground Zero toxins."

Researchers have long known that the cloud of dust and debris included a myriad of recognized carcinogens, including dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. But to establish a link between such exposures and cancer requires actually observing more documented cases of cancer among responders than would have been expected had they not breathed in the toxins. Until now, the only significant supporting evidence was a small study of eight multiple myeloma patients.

A review of the limited evidence by John Howard of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in July led to the decision to initially exclude cancer from the Zadroga Act's list of covered conditions.

Collaborating with colleagues from New York City's Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, FDNY researchers looked to a much larger source of data: nearly 10,000 male firefighters, all with health records dating back to well before September 11, 2001.

Among the 90 percent of the firefighters studied who were exposed, a total of 263 developed cancer. After adjusting for factors such as age and race, the team found that that figure represented a modest increased risk of 19 percent, or an additional 38 cases that wouldn't have otherwise occurred and could be attributed to 9/11 exposures. Although the difference fell short of statistical significance, Prezant noted that this is only the "start of the story."

The researchers emphasized that many cancers, including mesothelioma and other malignancies related to the known toxins found at Ground Zero, can take decades to develop. What's more, the study already misses three years worth of cases that may have developed since 2008.

Dr. Prezant noted that his team plans to continue following the firefighters over time, as well as look at cancer rates among EMS responders. As the current study lumped all cancers together, he also anticipates that the accumulation of additional data will allow researchers to tease apart rates of individual cancers.

"We're pleased that additional peer-reviewed studies are being added to the body of knowledge related to the question of potential World Trace Center-related health effects," Fred Blosser, public affairs officer with NIOSH, told HuffPost. "We will closely examine new studies along with the larger body of knowledge as we conduct the second periodic review."

He added that NIOSH expects to conduct that second periodic review in early to mid-2012.

Yet James Melius of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, who authored a commentary that accompanied the new report, suggested that a reevaluation of the evidence should be conducted "sooner rather than later."

"I believe that evidence from this study, plus what we know already about the exposures experienced by people involved in the rescue and recovery effort, certainly justifies the addition of cancer to that list of covered conditions," he said.

"Now that there is new evidence of an increased rate of cancers among 9/11 responders," added Maloney. "I hope that Dr. Howard will reevaluate adding coverage for cancers under the Zadroga Act, which the legislation empowers him to do."

Asbestos is really nasty stuff.
07:39 AM on 09/05/2011
Remember the twin towers were filled with asbestos and the EPA said the air was safe afterwards. The EPA should be sued.Bush and Cheney and the rest of neo cons need to be held for murder. It is one reason the twin towers and bldg #7 were imploded along with the pretext of starting wars in Iraq to steal oil and in Afghanistan for a gas pipeline and to control the opium trade.

asbestos causes mesothelioma and ONLY mesotheliomas.

What about all the people who worked nearby and the citizens of NY down wind, shouldn't they also be entitled to $Millions? Shouldn't the citizens of DC also be entitled to $Millions? Hey we are a rich nation with $ Billions unaccounted for in Iraq, we can afford to throw money away,
the taxpayers don't mind and anyway our security and highly paid Govt lawyers make our elected leaders unaccountable to the citizens of this great nation. Hey, God bless America

Um, no Clergy allowed to speak on 9/11/11....are you kidding...I would much rather hear the uplifting soul southing words of the Clergy than one word from a Politician and I'd bet the
family members feel exactly the same way!

Tears flowed as I watched the days unfold on and after 9/11. My thought was we are
watching the 'walking dead'...not just the responders, but all the souls covered in and
inhaling the toxins and the continued exposure in the days that followed. There will be
thousands of additional deaths over a period of 5 through 20 years from 2001.
My heart breaks for them and their families. These results must be included in the fund
and it should be expanded to include the unfortunate souls exposed that day and the
days that followed of those living, eating, working in the area that were caught in the
horror! There should be no question regarding the first responders having this help!

What many don't realize is that most cancers are only 10 to 12% genetic (inherited traits) whereas the majority of cancers (aproximately 90@) are from environmental factors specifically toxins in our air, water, food, and stress. Those wonderful souls who worked so selflessly (from fire fighters, police, & EMS, to citizens who were good samaritans) to help others in the 9/11 tragedy were obviously exposed to all kinds of environmental hazards - many not even mentioned in this article or the research. The IOM, CDC, etc., etc., all KNOW these facts AND they all KNOW that it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 years for cancers to develop to the stage of detection from this type exposure. For John Howard of (NIOSH) to exclude cancer from the Zadroga Act's list of covered conditions is outrageous (and SO typical of researchers who are paid to research by the people who don't want to be held accountable!). As US citizens/voters, we need to speak up and insist that cancers be added to the Zadroga's list...and maybe instead of paying for government reps to attend the 9/11 Memorial they can put that money into a fund to treat the real heros who have (or will have) cancer!

Why isn't the government helping the first responders with their medical care? They worked tirelessly to debride the gash left by 911. They cleaned out the wound dressed it and cured it in 8 months. We can't help them?

I'm sorry, were we supposed to be surprised by this? Because no one wold suspect that anyone could possibly develop cancer when mucking about in burning carcinogens for a day to two, mm?

Well, at least we can count on our government to aid and help these brave heroes who thought of the lives of others when they

OH WAIT.

From personal experience, Cancer can be caused by environmental exposure to chemicals. I know this one for a FACT!!
I was exposed to Chromium Plating Carcinogens from a manufacturing plant in our neighbor. It wasn't until years later that rare forms of Cancer started appearing in the neighbor. We lived up on a bluff and had constant exposure to fuel and liquid had also leaked into our water system. Can toxins case Cancer.... You bet!! All information was covered up for years and nothing was mentioned to the general public.

During the time the exposure was going on. we had a meeting and discussed the sickness the neighbors, school children ( two schools in the area ) and other problems with leakage of waste products on the ground surrounding the complex.

Comes to find out... the city permitted them to operate without Enviroment Impact Study for a period of two years... that's just government for you... if they can get away with it.. they will.

The manufacturing company has since moved to another area because the adjoining city threaten to sue the city. The damage had been already done and we now live with our health problems. Our city has a higher rate of Cancer than others.... Rare forms... I Know I one of the Victims.

Redevelopment at it's best.... It's all about the MONEY!!

Increased rates among firefighters but LESS than normal for demolition workers. Compare apples to apples not apples to oranges.

Seriously, it's time.

The Lancet article has nothing to do with demolition workers, just exposed and non-exposed firefighters.
03:44 PM on 09/03/2011
Big surprise... They should all be covered if there is any proof at all that it was caused or could have been caused by the relief work at ground zero... Why would any one question the coverage needs for those who broke their backs to help? Sometimes i am very puzzled by our goverments decisions.....
