Economic Observer/Worldcrunch:

BEIJING - Lady Gaga, the goddess of oddness, super sexy Beyonce, Taiwanese singer Lin Yu Jia, hot American band Owl City, evergreen Japanese R&B singer Ken Hirai, not to mention the Backstreet Boys who haven't been seen in awhile...this would have made up a fantastic lineup for an all-star concert in China, even the "Bird's Nest" (the National Stadium that held the 2008 Olympic) would have sold out its 100,000 seats in no time. Seeing Gaga strut and Beyonce' sway, that alone would have guaranteed three months of conversation material for China's trendy set.

Prostitution is 'illegal' in China, but guess what, its everywhere.

Pornography is 'illegal' in China, but guess what, its everywhere.

Lady Gaga has been 'banned', but guess what, its everywhere.

If anyone has been to China they would know that Lady Gaga is so popular that her name is in Chinese lexicon 'Oh my Lady Gaga' is a often spoken phrase used by Chinese youth.

I saw Beyonce in concert in Beijing.

But the Ministry of Culture - someone tells them to come up with a list of 100 songs to ban and they do it. Everyone will ignore it.

Now, I lived in Singapore some years ago.  They banned Puff the Magic Dragon.

Why do the unelected, dictatorial bums and thugs who illegitimately run China get to make decisions as to what people may like or see or partake in?

Is this government any different in this regard than the governments that are being overthrown in the middle east?

Difference is it's one party communist chinese rule, and they hold the firearms.
You can bet those same prudes probably have some illegally downloaded copies of their music on their home computers. Now if there were to sing about the glories of the Chinese Communist Party it might be different. And if they would see that somehow if would make the Chinese lots of money (or conversely if at a private chinese communist function they paid enough for said 'forbidden' artists to appear, would said 'forbidden artists' do it?-apparently in some cases altho for other dictators THEY HAVE!!!!!!!)
