Runaway Cow Tracked Down In Germany

BERLIN -- A cow named Yvonne whose escape kept a corner of Bavaria on tenterhooks has turned herself in after three months on the run.

The Gut Aiderbichl animal sanctuary, which now owns the errant bovine, said Thursday that a farmer had called to say Yvonne had shown up on her farm in the Muehldorf area, near the Austrian border. One of the sanctuary's employees was able to confirm Yvonne's identity with the help of her ear tag.

The brown dairy cow escaped from a Bavarian farm in May, then hid in forests. A few days later, she was involved in a near-collision with a police car, and local authorities labeled her a public danger.

Gut Aiderbichl bought Yvonne from her former owners and took the lead in trying to find her.

The six-year-old cow "apparently got tired of the loneliness," the local council in Muehldorf said in a statement, adding that she had jumped over a fence to join her fellow bovines.

Yvonne is now grazing contentedly with four calves and appears "healthy and calm," it added. Her owners were on their way to pick up the cow.

This article failed to mention some key elements of this story....Yvonne escaped while she, along with her other cow-girlfriends, was being sent to a slaughterhouse. While wandering around alone, she ran across a road in front of a police car and was then deemed a danger to traffic and a license to shoot (her) was granted. While hunters were the on lookout, animal-friendly people put up an outcry and the license was rescinded. In the meantime, an animal sanctuary bought her from the original owner and once she was found, they intend that she be left to pasture. Oh, there were several attempts to capture her by attracting her to a fellow bovine - notably a bull, Ernst, and her sister (I forget her sister's name). And yes, it's been an interesting story to follow, over these several months.

my nephews fiance is a vet at the sydney oz zoo. a chimp figured how to trip a relay on electric cage locks using a twig. She didnt make it past the second barrier she assured us.

Truth is, as we all suspected, there was a guy involved.

i'm glad it 's a dairy cow. i'll take a few cold glasses of milk over a steak any day. milk and booze. that's good food !!
