Texas Wildfire's New Path Helping Firefighters In Possum Kingdom Lake Area (VIDEO)

ANGELA K. BROWN   09/ 1/11 07:47 PM ET   AP

POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE, Texas — Crews battling a wildfire that destroyed dozens of homes in a North Texas lakeside vacation community doused flare-ups on Thursday, hoping to keep the blaze from threatening any more neighborhoods before the typically busy unofficial end-of-summer weekend.

The blaze that started Tuesday in the Possum Kingdom Lake area was about 50 percent contained on Thursday, and it was still feasting on the bone-dry vegetation that blankets much of the drought-stricken state, authorities said.

The fire in the lakeside community 75 miles west of Fort Worth had destroyed at least 40 homes and blackened 6,200 acres, and it comes on the heels of a much larger, more destructive blaze that destroyed 160 homes in the community this spring.

Knowing just how quickly a wildfire can spread, some residents of one subdivision decided Thursday to leave their homes after flames flared up nearby.

It's hard enough in a down economy to find buyers for the vacation homes that make up a large part of the area's real estate, but even more so when you have to drive them through neighborhoods of rubble and scorched earth, said Jackie Fewell, an agent in the area.

"How do you get past that? Sometimes it's showing by boat. But you do have to learn how to share the vision of what this (community) will be in the future," she said.

Some of those whose homes burned down in April have decided not to rebuild because their insurance payouts wouldn't cover the construction costs, and others had been planning to sell, anyway, Fewell said.

Despite two devastating fires in four months, though, locals expect the community to recover soon. While firefighters worked to contain the blaze Thursday, at least one construction crew was hard at work rebuilding a home that had burned down months ago.

David Nicklas, Palo Pinto County's chief executive, said it may take years, but Possum Kingdom Lake area's once-picturesque beauty will return.

"The vast majority will rebuild, and there are opportunities for people who want to buy property from those who don't want to come back," said David Nicklas, Palo Pinto County's chief executive. "I think five years from now, this will be just a bad memory."

Ann M. Brown, 46, said she and her husband decided to rebuild their weekend home because they love the area and believe it will recover soon enough.

"We really love the people out there in addition to the beauty," said Brown, of Dallas. "The beauty is the lake and the limestone cliffs. Fire cannot take that away."

Texas is enduring its most severe drought since the 1950s, with bone-dry conditions made worse by weeks of triple-digit temperatures in many cities. Blazes have destroyed more than 5,470 square miles since mid-November, the typical start of the wildfire season, which usually wanes in spring but has persisted this year because of the unusually hot, dry conditions.

Fewell remains optimistic the community will recover, and despite the challenges of trying to sell homes under the current conditions, she's managed to find a few positives.

"After the fire in April, it looked shocking, but then we saw views of the lake that we'd never seen before," Fewell said. "There are actually a few positives if you look for them."

According to the US Census, Texas had received $35,329,797.00 in Federal Funding in 2009 compare to $9,658,650 for the District of Columbia. You are right Mr. Perry..The Federal Government spends too much money.....On your state.

I am totally against Texas from receiving Federal Aid, just due to the fact they want smaller government. Why is it that a Republican State even bothering US Taxpayers for help?

These people just need to pray a little harder.

If the power in DC had permitted Obama to stop buying all that USAF gasoline from EXXON and dumping it on the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, the US oil industry would go belly up in 60 days... and Texas would revert to dry-dirt clod-kicking and taco stands.

That's one of the silliest things I've ever read.

About that hurricane, do you suppose it was God's way of telling the Washington DC He does not approve of their half-drowning people on those WATERBOARDS? All we need to do is vote for a President who will make laws in Jesus name to stop the rain..... www.postpubco.com/anticyclops.htm

Stop bringing your christian values to the tables. TX didn't want federal funds. They want smaller government. Why is it that TX wants the money when THEY want it? Republicans didn't want to give Joplin MO any money. They wanted to fend for themselves. So Texas, Fend for yourselves.

So, here's the question: how many years of "unusual" weather will it take for man-made climate change deniers to change their very closed minds? Like any rational scientist, the climate change hypothesis (that man made CO2 is creating a greenhouse effect) is not "proven," and recent climate anomolies are all anecdotal. But, just as evolution is still a hypothesis posited to explain...well, the obvious evolution of species over time, eventually a rational person will reach a rational conclusion. How long should that be?
05:23 PM on 09/01/2011
I haven't seen any unusual weather. I see what I've seen every single year for decades.

How old are you?

Some people require such massive evidence that massive damage is done before they admit the evidence. That's especially true when there is something at stake - in this case, a lifestyle that requires gasoline at every turn. It's like cigarettes, only easier to rationalize. "I NEED that SUV..." etc.

Hey where is Perry and what is he doing about the wild fires? And this is a prelude to him being President. Do nothing about emergencies of this magnitude? We have to come expect that from the right. As the people of New Orleans.
05:40 PM on 09/01/2011
The people of New Orleans were done in by an incompetent Democratic Mayor and Governor. How many died because of their inaction?

so even though the democratic mayor asked the republican president for assistance and the republican president said no, does that still count?

Perry is SO doing something about the wildfires. He's praying.

Wow, God is speaking to Rick Perry again......

According to Michele Bachmann, these wildfires in Texas are a SIGN FROM GOD, and they are telling Rick Perry to get out of the race and get back to Texas and try to BALANCE THE 24 BILLION DOLLAR DEFECIT in Texas.....ooops, I forgot.....Perry took 17 BILLION in FEDERAL STIMULUS to TRY and balance some of his MASSIVE State defecit, but he campaigns that the Feds are spending too much.

SO........first, Mr. Perry........GIVE THE MONEY BACK! Send 17 Billion back to Washington IMMEDIATELY.....the Government CANNOT AFFORD to bail out YOUR state.

Second, don't expect ANY Federal Aid for your massive wildfires. Your residents can help each other and pay for their own reconstruction. The Federal Government CANNOT AFFORD IT. That is what you SAY in your campaign speeches, and I think it's a good idea. We can try it in Texas and see how long it takes to totally DESTROY the Texas economy.

God is definitely sending a very strong signal and these fires may envelop the entire State! Listen to God Mr. Perry. Why are you in Iowa and South Carolina campaigning when your State is being TORCHED?????? Geez, not a very good Governor.

And don't forget, Glenn Beck would say this is a "blessing", too! F&F

Clearing brush, grass, weeds....is required in California ( For sure in Big Bear) or one gets a fine and the fire department makes sure it is done. Who cares about how much one gets for the job,
it is necessary!!!!! During large fires, we have helicopters taking water from the Lake, and dropping it on the fires. We have to landscape with thought to fire. No scrubs near the house.
09:05 PM on 09/01/2011
Supposed to do that up here in Alaska, but some don't. We have wildfires up here, too, people just don't hear about them as much.

I think its God telling Rick Perry to quit prostituting religion for political gain.

I have found that the internet loves to convey two myths. The first is by Republicans. They propose a love of fellow man as God wish's it. This is a LIE. Too many Republicans, especially those on the internet love to snicker and insult behind their belief system in order be mean spirited but not feel guilt. Then there are the Democrats. They claim a natural love for their fellow man. This too is a LIE. On the internet, they enjoy hurling snarky hateful insults at people they have never met, especially if they are in a more religious area in order to cover up for their own inadequacies. This of course doesn't cover the non religious republicans and religious democrats who are just as mean and nasty in mind, body and spirit.

So I instead make a proposal to both parties. If you are Republican and religious, pray for the people you can't help, and if you aren't religious be nice or SHUT UP! If you are a Democrat and are religious, pray for those that you can't help, and if you aren't religious, be nice or SHUT UP! he last two natural disasters have shown the absolute hatred that we seem to have for each other, and it's sickening.

Or, you could look at the science and see that devastating TX-centered droughts are associated with strong La Niñas, as we saw back in the 1950s and earlier decades. The recent La Niña was one of the strongest on record.

So Texans you just keep praying to God like your Governor and I'm sure he'll jump you to the top of the list over Haiti, Somalia and other such disastrous areas around the world, The only thing I believe about God is; "That those who require help help themselves before asking a non-existing God for it" You might start by accepting the fact that Global warming is not a hoax and causing primarily by mans action, A good start would be to park those gas guzzler trucks and drive something a bit more sensible and then perhaps elect a Governor with brains instead of a six shooter. You also might want to place education of your children on top of the to-do list as they are the future.

educate yourself as to the extreme differences between haiti, somalia and TX,USA--according to you....is it possible that they have the same economy ? and as for globull warming/climate change whatever you want to call it today, man does not control it or else we would have been extinct at the time of the industrial revolution, never mind the era in the USA when we made steel, mined extensively, manufactured everything etc. As for education ? LOL==take a good look at any inner city schools their budget per student and their graduation rates. and last but NOT LEAST ? God will not be mocked.
05:42 PM on 09/01/2011
Texas economy! wasn't it Perry who used stimulus money to balance the states budget. Global warming! your right man does not control it but he such as hell contributes to it. Education! I believe it was your Governor that gutted the funding to use somewhere else. God! How can you mock something that's nonexistence.
