Handsome men are to be avoided.
That's the topic at hand in a new clip from Whit Stillman's latest film, "Damsels in Distress," which is set to close the Venice Film Festival. Stillman's first movie in over 10 years, "Damsels" tells the story of two girls at a New England college obsessed with hygiene who end up volunteering at the campus Suicide Prevention Center.
The movie stars Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton as the anxious young coeds of the title, with Adam Brody also appearing. In the clip, Violet (Gerwig) comforts a girl who's just broken up with a boyfriend with some sage advice.
"I don't even consider good looks to be flattering in men, do you know what I mean?" she asks. "Cookie cutter good looking guys with their chiseled features, running around, full of themselves, getting everything they want, never suffering..."
If this scene is any indication, Stillman's still invested in the talky, neurotic dialogue that filled earlier films like "Metropolitan" and "The Last Days of Disco."
