deadline.com:

But when the studio is financially on-the-fence The Weinstein Co, and it acquired U.S. rights to Madonna's first feature-length directorial effort W.E., and the subject matter is Wallis Simpson, and its debut is at the unforgiving Venice Film festival which has panned far bigger and more influential big names in filmdom -- then not even the PR maestro Harvey Weinstein can downplay crushingly lousy reaction and reviews.

I think that Madonna brain has turned into swiss cheese for not catching her syphilis in time years ago

I bet the headline: " Death in Venice" was prepared before the
film was completed. She always pulls in alot of comments because
she is so yesterday. Oh yeah. Apparently she had been working
on this project for years. Who knew? She appears to be doing
exactly what she wants to do. Have you ever heard of a woman
living that way. Oh my. Futhermore, her projects are always so
complex and challenging and exhaustingly hard, not to mention
laying her reputation out for everyone to take a bite. If she could
have phoned in her career, the 80's would have been it for her.
But no. Add the 90's and the first decade of this new century.
A film yet to be seen and a new album and tour next year.
It is so fun being a Madonna fan and clearly she will decide
when it all ends.

We'll have to rename "The Peter Principle" for Madge. She reached her upper limit years ago.

True, she isn't an employee and hasn't been promoted, except by herself. "The Madge Principle" still applies.

I can't believe someone gave her money to do this job.

Did we actually believe she could direct a decent movie? And sleeping with actors and directors does not magically give you the capability to act or direct. If that were true, she'd be Meryl Streep by now. This is a woman, after all, who recorded her own farts for an MTV commercial back in the day. Her vanity gets in the way of any objectivity.

To be fair, remember how Sofia Coppola was universally slammed for her awful acting performance in Godfather 3? People said she only got the part because she was Francis Ford Coppola's daughter (probably true). But she went on to become an Oscar-winning screenwriter and director in her own right.

I'm not a Madonna fan at all but she's obviously got some kind of talent that's kept her around this long. One thing I've observed about her is she has always had a knack for working with the best music producers and video directors du jour, so maybe she should think about producing movies and helping new talent get their projects made.

I think you're on to something there. She should focus on producing because that does seem to be her forte.

Oh dear I just watched the clip… the film will continue to flop and embarrass Madonna and it should not have to be this way. I can’t believe how bad that clip was and yet so short. We say in India ‘What is the use of counting the mango trees, eat the mango’. She must rest her music laurels now and stop chasing the respect for film she will never achieve. I see her talking at Venice like an aged prostitute and I feel so sad for her. I have edited her wikipedia pages for a few years. Legolas2186 and I think I am done with her now. Just sad.

The best thing about the film is Madonna is not in it and with dialogue.
08:22 PM on 09/02/2011
Madonna should stick to her roots.. music is her venue She's a smart business woman.. she's good in the music biz, but at acting and movies in general, well.. she sucks..
01:37 AM on 09/03/2011
She has given some truly awful performances but she has also given some very good ones. Most "acting" is really just looking at ease on screen. Julia Roberts plays the same character in EVERY movie yet because she is at ease on screeen she is considered good when really, she isn't. Madonna should have stuck to movies where she is more natural esp musicals.

Acting is more than just looking cool, calm and collected. If that's what it was all about we'd still be watching silent films. The last film of Madonna's I ever saw as "Shanghai Surprise". She couldn't act and was miscast and came off more than ridiculous. The only reason she got away with "Evita": was because she had no dialogue. Let's just hope that if this Wallis Simpson film is as bad as they say, at least it might serve as a bit of high camp, unintentionally of course but if the Weinstein Company has to publicize it at all, it should publicize it that way. They might just break even at the box office.
02:43 PM on 09/03/2011
At least Julia Roberts knows what works for her and sticks to it instead of trying to branch out into other areas of entertainment where she isn't likely to do a good job. As far as I know, she's never tried to sing or dance. Madonna keeps trying to succeed in movies and she should stop because she has shown time and time again that she is not good at it aside from small supporting roles such as Desperately Seeking Susan or a movie that was essentially one long music video such as Evita.
