Labor Day 2011: Obama Celebrating At Detroit AFL-CIO Rally

DETROIT (AP) — President Barack Obama is previewing his ideas for job creation and economic growth at a Labor Day rally with union members in Detroit.

Obama's speech at the annual event sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO was serving as a dress rehearsal for the jobs address he's delivering to a joint session of Congress on Thursday night. He arrived in Michigan mid-day.

The president's appearance follows last Friday's dismal jobs report, which showed that employers added no jobs in August. It was the first time since 1945 that the government reported a net job change of zero. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, held steady at 9.1 percent.

The disappointing report sparked new fears of a second recession and injected fresh urgency into efforts by Obama to help get millions of unemployed people back into the labor market — and help improve his re-election chances.

Polls show the economy and jobs are the public's top concerns. Public approval of Obama's handling of the economy hit a new low of 26 percent in a recent Gallup survey.

The unemployment report also gave Obama's Republican critics, including those who want to challenge him in next year's presidential election, fresh ammunition to pound him with.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney called the report disappointing, unacceptable and "further proof that President Obama has failed." Romney is scheduled to outline his own job-creation plan in a speech Tuesday in the battleground state of Nevada.

In the speech to Congress, Obama is expected to call for a mix of individual and business tax credits and public works spending. He will also press lawmakers for swift action on those proposals.

The day after his address to Congress, Obama plans to visit Richmond, Va. — part of which is represented by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., one of the president's fiercest critics. Obama plans to spend a "decent amount of time" traveling the country to encourage support for his job creation plan, said deputy White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

"These are bipartisan ideas that ought to be the kind of proposals that everybody can get behind, no matter what your political affiliation might be," Obama said last week. "So my hope and expectation is that we can put country before party and get something done for the American people."

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said Monday that both political parties should get behind Obama's efforts to improve the hiring picture.

"We do need everyone to be on board," she said on NBC's "Today" show.

Solis said Obama "is very mindful of what the needs and concerns are of those individuals who have been out of work for so long." But she also said the jobless have a responsibility to seek training in new skills, if necessary, to better prepare themselves for the kinds of jobs available in today's economy.

Obama spent part of the holiday weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland "putting the finishing touches" on the proposals and the speech, said spokesman Jay Carney.

"That process continues over the next few days, but he's very far along," Carney said.

In Detroit on Monday, Obama was also expected to tout his efforts to save the auto industry and millions of jobs by providing federal bailouts in 2009 for General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group LLC. The AFL-CIO rally was being held in a GM parking lot.

Obama won Michigan in the 2008 presidential election and the economically challenged state is crucial to his re-election prospects. The state unemployment rate was 10.9 percent in July, above the national average for that month. The Detroit-area jobless rate was even higher, at 14.1 percent in July.

I just scanned down the 'politics' topics and there was not one story in the list about a Democratic legislator. Sure there's stories about our "ersatz Democrat" president but otherwise it looks like a recruiting poster for the GOP. People are posting "the parties this" and "the parties that" and claim that there's no difference between them. How can you tell, considering that the Democratic worldview gets  Read More...

Did anybody listen to the speech?

Anybody who ever went to a black church, or probably any Southern religious gathering, will notice the men and women in the audience egging Obama on with "well's" and "speak's!" "amens!" "yes!" "that's right!" I heard a hallelujah too. lol

Just that little bit of call and response put some flavor in that speech. Lately I've been wondering what was so good about Obama's oratorical style and this Labor Day speech kind of answered the question. It was a down-to-earth speech.

"Public approval of Obama's handling of the economy hit a new low of 26 percent in a recent Gallup survey."

Looks like some of the shine is coming off of the 'Glorious Leader's' immage. Maybe if he had spent all of the effort and political capital he and his minions (Pelosi, Reid, etc.) spent on jobs in lieu of ObamaCare, people would be working, the economy would be better and he would be guaranteed of re-election. Let's look at the results of ObamaCare passage:

"Gallup: Uninsured Have Increased Under Obama and Since Obamacare Was Enacted
Tuesday, September 06, 2011
By Terence P. Jeffrey

The percentage of American adults who lack health insurance coverage has not only increased during the presidency of Barack Obama, but it has continued to increase since Obama signed his signature piece of legislation last year mandating that by 2014 every American carry health insurance, according to a Gallup survey released today.

In 2008, when George W. Bush was president, according to Gallup, 14.9 percent of adult residents of the United States lacked health insurance coverage. That increased to 16.2 percent in 2009, the year that Obama was inaugurated, and to 16.4 percent in 2010, the year that Obama signed his law requiring that all Americans have health insurance.

In the first half of this year, according to data released by Gallup today, the percentage of adults in the United States lacking health insurance ticked up to 16.8 percent."

Actually I know many Union shops that are practically 100% against Obama. The Union Workers are not the Union Heads. Public sector Unions are another story.

Or a 6, even 7 figure salary; dining on lobster and filet, staying in 5 star hotels and traveling on private jets...just like the labor union bosses do. Where do you think they get the money for their lavish lifestyle? From the factory workers they steal from.

‎"Now everyone knows that the labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them." Martin Luther King Jr.

If you think President Obama is bad try RIck Pery on for size. Imagine all the thing the repubs could accomplish. Or how bout mitt, If we cut our own throat by not supporting every dem and that includes President Obama we deserve worse than George Bush, and believe me we will get it!

It is interesting that we Democrats now find ourselves addressing voters with your argument -- "If you think he's bad ...." How disappointing is it that the campaign and administration that began with such hope and promise is now reduced to being sold as simply the lesser of evils. We did not take our opportunity to propose long-term solutions to problems, to end our wars and foreign commitments that are draining our budget, to lift up people from their lowest depths. I agree that we are better than the Republicans, but it is unfortunate that our argument this time around has to be cast in these terms. It is an opportunity missed.

I don't cast it in those terms at all. I have listened, I have read, and I have stood by President Obama the whole time. If people would just become informed they would know better. I ask simple questions to republicans and they have no answers.
