The Maggot Sandwich At The Colorado State Fair (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/06/11 03:50 PM ET Updated: 11/06/11 05:12 AM ET

We're getting pretty exhausted by all the crazy fried fair food this year, but lucky for us, now we've moved away from batter and toward...fly larva.

At the Colorado State Fair, George Sandefur, of Jungle George's Exotic Meats and Bugs, explains that his maggot sandwich "isn't bad." The maggots are USDA-approved and grown on an insect farm in California. Sandefur went through 23,000 critters at the California State Fair and about the same amount for Colorado.

Quick Poll

Would you eat a maggot sandwich?

Hmmph! How much is he charging for that maggot burger? I'm sure it's safe and it might be tasty, but I would still likely vomit after a bite.

Hey down south they eat deep fried cow brain sandwiches. And eating bugs and worms is common in Asian countries.

Yummy!
Reminds me of a childhood treat; Angleworms, creamed on toast.
Just like Mom used to dig up and make.

I've thought about trying fried crickets. We have a lot of them around our property, but i don't know that frying them is safe enough if pestisides are involved. Might go to the pet store and buy some of their crickets to try. Yum?

These aren't the same kind of bugs you find in your yard. They are professionally grown in an FDA approved type of environment. Also they are not fly larvae but beetle larvae.

I think most would be surprised at how great bugs taste when you get over the foreign western concept of eating them.

I personally find it no more or less visually offputting than crustaceans.

Those aren't maggots, they're meal worms. USDA probably wouldn't approve real maggots since you have to harvest them from some bloated dead animal carcass on the side of the road!

Yep I was going to say those are meal worms. Maggots look like grains of rice.
