Supervisor Scott Wiener Introduces Nudity Guidelines In Public Health Legislation

San Francisco Nudity

First Posted: 09/06/11 01:46 PM ET Updated: 11/06/11 05:12 AM ET

As District Attorney spokeswoman Debbie Mesloh famously proclaimed in 2004, "being naked in San Francisco is not a crime." But if District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener has anything to say about it, it might be a crime if you don't at least put down a towel first.

At today's Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Wiener, whose district includes the Castro, will introduce legislation to protect public health standards from potential problems with public nudity.

The legislation would require nude people to cover public seating (for instance, a seat on MUNI) with a layer of protection before sitting down. This can include a towel, a blanket or a Folsom Street Fair party flier. The legislation would also require people to put on clothing before entering a restaurant. Public nudity will still be ok in other establishments, but you'd better grab some shorts if you want fries with that.

"San Francisco is a liberal and tolerant city, and we pride ourselves on that fact," said Wiener in a statement. "Yet, while we have a variety of views about public nudity, we can all agree that when you sit down naked, you should cover the seat, and that you should cover up when you go into a food establishment."

In the same way that non-smokers constantly b*tch about second-hand smoke, nudists should be aware that most people do not want to have to see them naked.

... and have you noticed that the people who walk around naked are the ones you DON'T want to see naked?!

talks about false equivalency, when was the last time looking at nudity gave you cancer? And I mean literally. Also, you can turn your head and not look, something that won't protect you from second-hand smoke...
03:10 AM on 09/12/2011
If you have to turn your head to "not look", that means that you've already SEEN IT!
Otherwise, how would you know to turn away?

Being forced to view other people naked is offensive and sociopathically rude.

We are talking about creating a big hoopla and legislation for about 4 people who go nude in the Castro and are always cleanly and courteous. I have never seen any of them in a restaurant anyway. This is a poltical move by a conservative who brings shame to Harvey Milk's District.

Yes now that I think of it, you're right! There's only about 4 of them and they are clean and courteous. Maybe it's just a safety measure. I mean, the nudists are local and that's why they are courteous; what happens when others decide to make the Castro their hang out? They might not be like the locals.

i thank God where i live they dont do these things in public.and where i live it is a crime to go around naked.

Just as most places ban shirtlessness or talk tops in restaurants because of safety reason I would also ban total nudity. You have to watch out for McDonald's hot coffee, you know.

I live in San Francisco. Hardly do any traditional minded person visit the Castro except they are forced to do so. As much as I for a ban on nudity in San Francisco, I believe this provision in the law is misplaced. There are more pressing issues in S.F at the moment like the exploding welfare/ low income housing programs and the ridiculous high wages for city employees. And all these programs are payed for with taxes, fees and parking tickets. I don't mind the taxes and fees, but $65 for a parking ticket is ridiculous considering a good amount of that money is going to feed, cloth and house a homeless dope phene who will buy his drugs from another welfare low income housing recipient (Who uses his subsidized home as a meth lab and a indoor farm for marijuana)

That $65 is actually $90 and most of the money doesn't go where you think it does. The comment crowd here aren't rocket scientists but the may be a little too smart for you I think. Check the budget sometime.

Why is it the ones that shouldnt be naked at home are the ones that want to be naked in public?

1. Don't we all share public restrooms in restaurants? 2. I'm assuming Wiener is proud of the "fact," not that "face," that SF is liberal and tolerant.

San Francisco will not allow Wallmart in our city. Main Street mom and pop businesses are more important.

Forcing other people to look at nasty, fat, tattooed and pierced, naked people is apparently "ok", but "big box stores" are apparently extremely offensive.

Seriously? What is the point of introducing legislation for something that doesn't happen anyways? This is pointless and a waste of time. C'mon Sup. Weiner, focus on the real problems of your district. Like the rise in muggings and anti-gay attacks in the heart of the Castro. Like the far-too-long empty storefronts in the neighborhood. Like busses turning down streets they have no business going on and running over innocent bystanders. Stop trying to turn the Castro into Disneyland for just the A-Gays and the tourists.

I do think it's a good idea to require some type of seat covering before sitting one's naked behind on seats that are used by the public. Public bathrooms have seat covers for toilet seats and the same should be available for nude people. All nude people are not clean or healthy just like all clothed people aren't clean or healthy.
