Maryland Football Uniforms And More Of The Ugliest Jerseys In College Football (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/06/11 05:50 PM ET   Updated: 11/06/11 05:12 AM ET

On Monday night, the University of Maryland played a college football game before a raucous, rain-soaked home crowd. They won this game. But all of the touchdowns and co-ed enthusiasm seemed of little consequence compared to what the Maryland players were wearing.

The Terps uniforms, which were intended to look like Maryland's state flag, generated a Twitter maelstrom from fans and athletes alike ( the best of which can be viewed here). With so many people rushing to dub these the worst-looking outfits in the history of uniforms, we couldn't help but wonder what are the ugliest uniforms in college football?

Many feel the University of Maryland's uniforms shot them to the top (or bottom?) of the list of 120 division I-A football schools. But to their credit they may have given the Terps a distinct advantage that ultimately led to their 32-24 victory over the Hurricanes last night. After all, whenever the Maryland offensive players moved at high speeds in those jerseys, there was simply no way for Miami defenders to know whether they were tackling an opposing player, a referee or a misplaced courtier of the Queen of Hearts from Alice In Wonderland. In fact, the refrain of "off with their helmets" resounding across social media platforms could possibly have convinced Hurricanes players of the latter scenario.

Here is an unfashionable show that includes some of the bad, the banned and the downright ugliest jerseys in college football.

And of course there's the belle of the ball: The University of Maryland.

These uniforms set off quite a reaction in the twitter world, mostly negative, but we think David Nelson of the Buffalo Bills had the best insight when he tweeted, "Seeing a lot of talk about Maryland's jerseys on here.. I think Under Armour got what they wanted."

All last week my boyfriend's little brother (who plays for Terps) sent us pictures of what the new uniforms would look like, and to be honest I wasn't a fan. I thought that the uniforms had too many patterns going on and overall were too busy for a football uniform. Monday, when the team entered the field with split personality uniforms, my first reaction was hate. As the game progressed, I found myself more intrigued by the concept behind the uniform and by the end of the game fell in love with them. I enjoyed the display of state pride through the use of the Maryland flag pattern and love the concept that depending on whether the team is on offense or defense, the Terp uniforms can appear on TV as a completely different uniform. From what I can understand, Under Armour's concept behind revealing newly designed uniforms is to create an innovative look for football, a sneak peak into the future. Change is difficult for anyone to accept, especially for football fans who are used to seeing generic uniforms. Overall I appreciate Under Armour's innovative design of the new Terps uniforms, and look forward to the future look of football.

I've always wanted a team to wear strait black uniforms with White numbers... nothing else.

I'm glad the photos had commentary under each one. Otherwise I'd have a hard time figuring out what's so wrong with many of them. Petty.

I always liked watching Boise State home games, with the blue fielld. The only thing uglier than Nike U's uniform permutations is their recruiting practices.

Ironic they go after ISU for 'old style USC knockoffs' but they don't go after Iowa for "old style Steelers knockoffs"

Did one of the unpaid interns from HuffPost's style pages sneak into the sports pages while no one was looking, to try to emulate Tim Gunn?

If so, you didn't Make It Work.

Kudos to Maryland and everyone else for coming up with some distinctive uniforms.

I have to confess, I really kinda love the wyoming uni's. Maybe the molten mustard yellow has melted my good taste.

I like the Maryland uniforms. I'd like to see what they'd look like with both sides of the helmet with the yellow pattern and both shoulders with the red.

Glad Maryland won the game but my eyes are still burning from their helmets. These college teams should stick to one home uniform and one road uniform.Maybe a special home uniform once a year. But what Oregon and Maryland are doing with a different uni each game is ridiculous.Teams need an identity and that's what their uniforms should be.

What distinguishes Maryland more than their flag? Seems only right it's incorporated into their uniform, like the Ravens and Orioles have on their uniform sleeves.

Always did admire the Maryland state flag for its bold distinctiveness so I've got to go ahead and give the jersey a big thumbs up.

Seems like the editor wants conformity and not something to distinguish your team.
