Chick Beer, Yet Another Beer Targeted At Women

First Posted: 09/07/11 01:41 PM ET Updated: 11/07/11 05:12 AM ET

We wish we could be snarky and critical about Chick Beer, the newest attempt to market alcohol to women. After all, we've previously decried all this light beer/low calorie/fancy packaging nonsense seen in products such as perfume-inspired wine, a beer that "needs no makeup" and a beer from Molson Coors that offers women a "less gassy" product. But we're just too tired to rehash the argument about how some women actually like to drink real beer.

The Chick Beer website explains:

Chick Beer finally gives women a beer choice that suits their tastes and their style. The bottle is designed to reflect the beautiful shape of a woman in a little black dress. The six-pack looks like you are carrying your beer in a hip stylish, purse. Chick's unique reflective bottle blings you up! It's fun, fabulous, and female!

The beer has 97 calories and 3.5 carbs per bottle. Five percent of the profits will go to charities that empower women. We can get behind that mission, but that's sadly not enough of an enticement to get us to try this beer.

The marketing angle makes sense. They keep trying to push those malted, fruity drinks like Smirnoff and Mike Hard Lemonade on guys. I guess it goes both ways.

I would have gone a whole other way with the marketing. I would not market it like it is meant for a 14 year old girl. They should have emphasized a more woman empowerment angle and used labels that reflected that. They are hoping for cheap publicity and lots of feminists and anyone with common sense will say this is stupid as most beers are this low calorie. Chick Beer, enjoyed with a nice Virginia Slim. :(

I enjoy home brewing and I have a brew that the ladies just love. Most women do not like highly hopped beer as it can be very bitter so what I do is reduce the amount of hops I use. I like to experiment with different flavors so I’ll add lavender flowers and orange zest to the boil. I like Cascade hops as they add a citrusy twist to this brew.

Another technique I use is to brew with both pilsner barley malt and honey. Honey does two things for the beer, first honey is very fermentable and almost all of the sugars are converted into alcohol reducing both the calories and carbs of the beer, second the honey makes for a very dry and crisp finish with no aftertaste. Six weeks of bottle conditioning will give the Lavender time to calm down and mellow a little.

My Lavender Honey ale has won “Best of Show” at my local county fair and went on to pick up a blue ribbon in the spice beer class at the state fair. I’ve had many females tell me that they don’t like beer only to come back asking for more after they try some of this. Prost!

As a woman who enjoys barley wines, imperial stouts and the occasional IPA, I wouldn't even think of drinking that. I have never really liked lavender in my food. But, hey, if they like it, I'm glad they do, I just couldn't drink it.

If you have nothing nice to say, flip a table.

No matter how hard they try to pretty it up, a woman will always look manly holding a beer.

Most women I know like a nice White beer with some flavor and depth to it. I actually like them as well for most occasions. Wine has it's place but nothing beats a nice cold beer in a can or bottle to end the day. Wine just doesn't do it.

Blue Moon has some popularity with women and I can see why. It's decent tasting beer and it has a soft and charming design to the case and bottle. That's how you market to them.

I think it's marketing folly to box yourself in a beer for girls. It would seem the smarter thing to say "here is one that both men and women can enjoy equally"

If they just want to create a small gimmick beer that's whatever, though.

A carton that looks like a purse??? Uhmm, don't think so.
I'll have a Snow Cap, or a Black Butte Porter. In summer a Negra Modelo or Corona with lime.

Although lately it's been Mojito time....

It would REALLY make me happy to find an outlet for Innis & Gunn somewhere in NW (within driving distance preferably). Anybody?

According to their website, they seem to be in Connecticut and New York only.

Thank you for checking. That's what it said last time I checked their website. It's one of the best tasting full bodied beers I've ever had. Had some in Scotland; I keep hoping.

Marketing beer to women is old (the real reason light beer exists in the first place). Creating a beer product specifically for women is fairly new. All the same, charity or no, I would feel like a tool if I bought this stuff, regardless of gender.

I'm a girl who likes beer, and I can't really even picture the type of person who would drink this stuff.

Not to mention it is pretty condescending and ridiculous, but really, there are so many types of beer that are readily available these days that even someone who "doesn't like beer" can find something to drink without resorting to this gimmicky stuff.

If I didn't like beer, I'd either have wine or a mixed drink instead anyway.

I can. Teenagers. That's who this is really targeting. It's not aimed at adult women who know better. The packaging seems to be designed to appeal to them.
03:51 PM on 09/08/2011
Ugh, no. As a self respecting woman I wouldn't be caught dead holding one of these bottles... why don't I just carry around a glass of puckerz and giggle incessantly?

Reminds me of ads for American light beer - millions spent annually on advertising however the product sucks.

All these low-calorie products ignore the most important aspect: they have LESS alcohol. You don't hear them touting that some watery product that has only 64 calories only has 2.8 % alcohol. The lower the calories, the less the buzz, and let's not fool ourselves into thinking there is any other reason to drink it.

I don't even drink beer and I find this offensive. What's next chick scotch!

Well they already make chick rum (Malibu) and chick tequila (tequila rose) so why not. : )

What a condescending product and ad campaign. Any woman who drinks and enjoys beer will not buy this stuff. "Diet" beers usually suck. I drink IPAs and damn the extra calories.

Yep, I don't mind eating a few extra calories if they come with extra flavor.
