Pop Music Lyrics More Sexualized Than Ever, According To BYU Study

Pop music lyrics are more sexualized now than they were in 1959, according to a recent BYU study of Billboard Hot 100 songs from 1959 to 2009. That means research started around "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" and ended up at "Birthday Sex."

Regression analysis was used to compare song lyrics from 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, and 2009. Of all years, 2009 was significantly more likely to contain sexualization, as published in the journal Sexuality & Culture. Other highly sexualized lyrics were by male artists and non-White artists in 1999 and 2009.

The research was designed to alert sexuality educators "desiring to improve sexual health outcomes and promote healthy adolescent sexual development."

So all you sexuality educators, dust off your vinyl for the next big dance. And the rest of us can only look forward to 2019.
