AMHERST, Mass. — It wasn't just a record, it was delicious and nutritious.

Staff and students at the University of Massachusetts celebrated the start of the new semester on Monday by making the world's largest stir-fry.

Using a custom-built, 14-foot-frying pan, the 4,010-pound meal included 800 pounds of chicken, 500 pounds of onions, 400 pounds of carrots, 300 pounds of broccoli as well as peppers, green beans, bok choy, peanuts, basil and garlic. It was cooked in 50 pounds of canola oil.

Ken Toong, executive director of Auxiliary Enterprises at UMass-Amherst, says the purpose was to stress sustainability and promoting healthy eating as many of the vegetables were grown at a student-run farm.

A Guinness Book of World Records representative was on hand to certify the record. The previous record was 2,319 pounds.

UMass Amherst has gone overboard with discipline in order to shake that image and time. It's too bad. Good times were had by almost all.

are you crazy? each year, extravanganja gets bigger and bigger. umass amherst trolls the local news to make people think its safer after getting the covated "most violent school" and out of control protests by drunk idiots in southwest, but hippies, drugs, music, and art are at an all-time high for amherst. it makes me want to go back!

My alma mater. All we got (way back when) were beanies (required at all times) and a plastic sign to wear on our backs stating our home town and major.

800 lbs of chicken? If they wanted to promote "sustainability," they wouldn't be using meat.

Did the University of Shanghai welcome students with a world-record deep fry?

Naw, the executive chef involved from the Food Channel seems to favor the UMass for his attempts to break records. He, as the story told; also used the campus and student body to assist with his breaking the record for sushi.
