First Posted: 09/08/11 04:11 PM ET   Updated: 09/12/11 01:15 PM ET

It's that make-or-break time of the year -- back to school and getting ready for the school picture. As you think about making your best and most creative effort, remember that this is the picture that will haunt you for years to come in the wallets of your family members, in your yearbook, and on the web. Our friends at Awkward Family Photos shared some of their most memorable.

That first photo doesn't look to be a school picture, but a dance picture. The girl is wearing ballet shoes.

Wow, some people need to chill out because you are missing the point of the "Awkward Family Photo!". It's an entire website dedicated to the awfully funny portraits that we all sometimes take. Most of the pictures are proudly submitted by the person in the picture - or by a family member getting one more laugh out of it. These are hilarious - and there's nothing wrong with laughter on any day.

When I was a child (over 30 years ago) the only prop they made us pose with was a globe. I have one of myself with my terrible overbite, my hair in Shirley Temple curls and me wearing my terrible cat eye glasses. It would definately be a contender for an award for an "awkard" school picture.

Working in a photo lab that does school pictures I can only ask "Where did you get these out-dated pictures from?" We in the business have NOT had those backgrounds and effects since the 1990's??? A little more research is in order for you and a great sigh of relief from parents that MOST studios provide excellent dropdowns and greenscreens for your child's portraits!!!

If I understand the 'point' of this article, the premise is that it is bad for children and young people to choose self expression over the perceived approval of others. A second point seems to be that everyone should look back on their younger selves with regret, chagrin and embarassment.
I hope the boy with the orange socks grew up to be a man who likes himself and who knows that he is the ONLY person whose approval is mandatory for a high quality of life. The idea that everyone ought to grow up to be a pathologically self conscious approval junkie is a pathetic one.The truly well adjusted person is one who is more interested in being true to him/herself than in constantly altering his/her views and tastes in the hope of gaining a popularity that will inevitably prove to be as synthetic and insubstantial as the persona they have manufactured.

What's with the posed photos with the theatrical props ? We didn't have to worry about that when I was a kid, b/c they just took standard photos. And the photographer tried to make you look nice.
The goofiest pics of the above are the one with the kid who's dressed like Gilligan ( on Gilligan's Island ) and the boy or girl that's got long hair with an Indian headband, and her / his broken arm with cast is posed up front and conpicuous----across her/ his body on the rung of a ladder.

Ok.. These pics are professionally taken. Someone paid for them and someone put them online. and now they are complaining?? LOL.. I think all the kids are cute and adorable. My favorite is the little girl in pigtails and cap. She is so cute!!.. And about the guy with the orange socks? When my daughter started dressing herslef she always picked out NON-MATCHING socks. She kept it up even when I explained the art of matching. Ok.. I am all for self-expression so I finally found a site that sells un-matched socks in "pairs" of three. She is now 16 and still wears them. So!.. you in the orange socks.. Good for you!!!.. :)

It wasn't the orange socks (plus he was a guy), as much as the fact that he was laying on his stomach with his feet in the air and his shoes to the side. That's just awkward...

This is how parents get even for their kids being jerks. In a couple of years, when they bring that special someone home to meet the parents- out comes the photo album.

Ahhh, sweet revenge.

No no no! Try the 60's and 70's ! I gave my tie-dye and bell bottoms to my daughter and she wore them!! Funky... We had toe socks, bell bottoms, elephant bells, saddle shoes(yeah, those were horrible!) and the list goes on! I was 6' shorter than my older sister and I had boobs and she didn't, but I had to ware her handmedowns! I looked like a frump for years! We had underware that were all cotton and went to your waist! Maxi Pads with a belt you had to have to keep them on! I wish I had been born in 1990!

My daughter wore saddle shoes for years! Nothing goes better with mandatory school uniforms. She was born in 1989. And wore uniforms until she got into high school.
