'Chinese Fire Drill Dance Party': Hud Morgan Takes Post-Men's Vogue Viral Video Turn
Some people quit journalism to write novels. Others to save the whales. Former Men’s Vogue editor Hud Morgan left to become a screenwriter — and apparently, a music producer/rapper on the side.
Last week, the Hollywood-based scribe — who wrote a column for Mogue that took him everywhere from St. Barts to North Korea — released a music video called “Chinese Fire Drill Dance Party,” a song about, well, pretty much what it sounds like: dancing at traffic lights. In its first few days online, the video was picked up by Fresh New Tracks (they liked it) and Gawker (they didn’t), and already has more than 12,000 views. Not bad for a band — or rather, a “band of reprobates” as Morgan calls them — composed of a screenwriter, a director, and only one actual musician, Courtenay Green. (The group’s name, for anyone keeping score at home, is Moral Vacation, and the song is actually available on iTunes.)
“It’s just a thing we decided to do for fun after having a Chinese Fire Drill Dance Party on the way home from a bar a couple months ago,” Morgan told The Huffington Post. “Obviously I don’t have any expectations other than a major record deal, an appearance in the Sahara Tent at Coachella 2012, an incredibly messy breakup, a failed solo career, a stint in rehab, and an eventual comeback tour in a South Bay yacht rock group.”
