Exeter UFO Sighting: An Unsolved Mystery, 46 Years Later

Exeter

First Posted: 09/08/11 12:03 PM ET Updated: 11/08/11 05:12 AM ET

In the predawn hours of Sept. 3, 1965, Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking home, when a brightly lit 90-foot-wide object silently approached him from the sky, leaving him terrified.

At about the same time, a woman called the local police station in Exeter, N.H., to report that a large, silent craft with flashing lights had followed her car for over 10 miles before vanishing in the night.

Thus began a series of UFO sightings that evening that would forever change the New England town of 7,000 people.

After Muscarello told his story to local police, he and Officer Eugene Bertrand drove out to the area where the UFO had been spotted. Within minutes, both Muscarello and Bertrand watched as a huge object rose up behind the trees, giving off a reddish glow.

During the night, several witnesses -- including another police officer -- reported seeing the mysterious object, and a subsequent Air Force response to the sightings indicated it was "unable to identify the object."

Nearly half a century later, nobody has been able to explain that strange evening.

The events sparked widespread media attention -- including a two-part article in "Look" magazine -- and became the subject of the John G. Fuller book "Incident at Exeter."

"Not only is this a fine example of a close encounter of the first kind, but it is a showcase illustration of [the Air Force's UFO Project] Blue Book negligence, put-down of witnesses, attempts to explain away the testimony of responsible witnesses with a parade of 'official' explanations, and of capitulation on the part of the Pentagon which, months later, had to admit that the case should have been carried as 'unidentified,'" wrote astronomer J. Allen Hynek in his 1977 book, "The Hynek UFO Report."

The late astronomer served as scientific consultant to Project Blue Book, the official Air Force study of UFOs conducted between 1952 and 1969.

To commemorate the Sept. 3 UFO incident, the town of Exeter held a festival over Labor Day weekend, featuring a UFO building contest, alien pet costumes, a children's ET costume contest and several key speakers, including UFO historian Richard Dolan, author and lecturer Kathleen Marden and former nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman.

Friedman recalls the significance of the original 1965 Exeter UFO incident.

"There were police officers involved as well as independent witnesses," he told The Huffington Post. "It was a well-documented case and one where there was no reason for anybody to think that this was anything other than a very legitimate event."

Friedman, ever the pro-alien reality advocate, told the large festival crowd that it's not impossible that the technology needed to travel the vast distances between star systems exists and is already being used -- an idea which UFO skeptics have long debunked.

"This is a very special time," Friedman said. "Our society has opened Pandora's Box. We figured out nuclear fusion. And nuclear fusion -- which you can use for H-bombs -- also can be used for propulsion. So we have to be concerned [about] anybody else in the 'neighborhood.'"

"I worked on nuclear fusion propulsion systems which would allow you to kick particles out the back end -- having 10 million times as much energy per particle as they can get in a dumb old chemical rocket. Therefore, anybody in the neighborhood would be certainly concerned about these idiots who killed 50 million people in World War II."

Whether or not extraterrestrials may consider Earthlings using nuclear fusion propulsion systems as any kind of threat, the fact remains that of the huge numbers of UFO sightings that occur around the world, approximately 5 percent are still not fully identified.

The possibility of there being extra-terrestrial life forms in the vast galaxies out in the our universe, most certainly cannot be 0%. That they are at levels of intelligence greater or lesser than that of homo sapiens, is something that only time will reveal. That some extra-terrestrial life forms may have mastered space travel, we can only speculate about, until direct contact is one day made.

But what exactly is a UFO? Is it simply a craft capable of flight through space, or is it a time travel machine in addition to its extraordinary flight capabilities, based upon eyewitness reports? In all probability, 99% of all the UFO's encountered, may actually be "Intra-Terrestrial," rather than Extra-Terrestrial, meaning that they could be arriving from a point in time either in the past or the future, where time travel has actually been "invented," but from right "here" on this planet. Impossible? Maybe, maybe not! We may not know yet, but time almost always does bring to light the answers to today's mysteries.

The truth may not necessarily be out there, but right within here..

I read the "Exeter UFO Incident" and very interesting. In my book Proof of Extraterrestrial Intelligence: The Cape Canaveral Apollo Program Chronicles, I documented numerous events involving aliens and several rendezvous (liaisons) with a certain black sedan during key Apollo Programs.
I also documented 12 communications with the aliens before their liaisons with the dark sedan.
The liaisons occured before Apollo 6 (umanned test flight) and ended before Apollo 7 (first manned test flight).

All these UFO sightings over the years and no contact or physical evidence. One thing that explains the mystery is that possibly these things are from our own future and they can't interact with us for fear of changing their own present. They needn't travel all those light years through space, just open a worm hole and come for a vacation and watch the primitives. What a show! They may be drones as their manuevering produce G's that would kill.

Time, the 4th dimension, is altered in a gravitational vortex, according to Einstein.

There are many UFO cases that are clearly unresolved, this is just one example. To read about a personal UFO experience, some well researched cases and many extremely credible cases with pictures and video go to

Aliens are a mathematical certainty. The only caveat is if they can exceed the speed of light to get here. Assuming 25% of the sightings/encounters are real; the aliens have found some way to "fold space" and/or use Wormholes, etc. to get their ships here in a matter of days/months rather than years. Since many of the ships sighted are too small to contain abundant supplies; it follows that they are not far from their bases. So the ships we are seeing are local in a sense. Some of the ones that have crashed have apparently been struck by lightning ( very hard to get out of the way of; especially since it's randomly generated ) ; like Roswell. In a 1950's published book; a woman who was abducted described the alien as putting a shiny disk into his control panel to bring up a star map which displayed holographically. What she was describing was a CD/DVD.

I have never been attracted to the story of UFO's although my father and sister were. I don't understand why the deniers are so strong in their conviction that there are no UFO's. From the photos I have seen of "outer space" I have decided that the Universe could contain other realities and therefore there could be UFO's whatever that may mean to us, the citizens of our own reality.

The theory I particularly like, is that the genuinely non-human UFOs aren't flying craft with beings inside, but are actually the beings themselves.

For all the newbies into the ufo phenomena, check out "Out of the Blue" documentary. Thats a great place to start your research.

and the book "UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials go on the record" by Leslie Kean, and the subsequent documentary "I know what I saw" by some of the same people as "Out of the Blue" and that new documentary on the History Channel "Special Access: UFOs on the record" (I haven't seen it (no TV) but pre-ordered the DVD due out in October. Also check out mathematical physicist Ruggero Maria Santilli who has a theory that we have two universes co-existing, one with matter and one with antimatter - in the antimatter one we have antigravity and causal time going backwards and negative energy and so on - he talks about the possibility of a "space time machine" that has exactly the properties of UFOs - doesn't involve inertia so can jump and turn on a dime and travel vast distances in minutes (ever wondered why aliens don't stop to pick up candy and bottled water and just stretch their legs? they must be only minutes from home).

It's a good documentary. Also, some governments like Belgium and the UK have already released some or all of their 'secret' military UFO files which include great irrefutable and reliable material.

I never used to believe aliens were coming here but now that I listen to some of the crazy politicians (Sarah, Michele, Rick, etc.) aliens are one of the few possible explanations. An experiment gone awry perhaps?
