Former Star UC Berkeley Golfer Found Dead In Parking Lot

The Fremont Police Department is investigating the death of former UC Berkeley golfer Diane Kwon, whose body was found in a Fremont parking lot at 11pm on Monday evening.

Kwon was discovered behind an empty storefront near the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Fremont Boulevard that previously housed a Barnes & Noble.

CBS San Francisco reports:

Kwon played two seasons at Cal. As a freshman in 2008-2009, she helped lead the Bears to a top-25 ranking and a spot in the NCAA West Regional. The following season, she played in four tournaments for the Bears, contributing to the team’s top-10 ranking, an athletics spokeswoman said.

Before her time at Berkeley, Kwon won two consecutive golf championships and was ranked as one of the top ten amateur high school golfers by Golfweek.

Alameda County officials have not yet publicly released the cause of death.

"We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the loss of Diane," Cal coach Nancy McDaniel said in a statement released by the school. "Diane was a fierce competitor while still managing to be a gracious sportswoman. What struck me most was her vivacious personality and the friendships she forged wherever we went."

Fremont police are asking anyone with information regarding Kwon's death to please call (510)-790-6900.
