Joe Biden, John Boehner Joke About Golf, GOP 'Barbarians' Ahead Of Obama Jobs Speech

First Posted: 09/09/11 03:28 PM ET Updated: 11/09/11 05:12 AM ET

As they waited for President Barack Obama to appear before a joint session of Congress Thursday night to present his jobs plan, Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) got into a jovial back-and-forth.

"Hi, I'm one of those barbarians" Boehner jokingly greeted Biden, as the vice president reached his seat next to the House speaker, behind the president's podium. Biden referred to Republicans as "barbarians" at a Labor Day rally in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"Where's the gate, man, where's the gate!" Biden replied with a laugh.

After that, Biden turned serious. "We've got a heck of a lot of work to do," Biden said, shaking his head. But Boehner cut him off. "I went golfing in August," he told the vice president. "Seven birdies, five bogies. I shot two-under."

"The next day," Boehner continued, "I shot an 86!"

"One day I play great, the next day I play awful, but this was the round of the decade," Boehner bragged.

"That's incredible," Biden replied.

Boehner and Biden famously played golf together in June, along with President Obama and Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich, as part of the so-called "golf summit."

John switched gears on the dime soon as Joe mentioned the work that needs to be done. This says a lot about what their private meetings are like. The President comes in ready to work and the GOP wants to deflect and waste time.

anyone see the herman cain singing God bless America while showing 9/11 footage? was nice till the end when he shows herman cain for president 2012. Anyone besides me tired of Republicans using 9\11 as a campaign slogan? Didnt they learn anything from Rudy 2008? Its a damn shame.

To be honest, if the video was sincere I thought it was a nice thing to put out there, but the fact that he made the video as a campaign tool is disgusting.

Women's golf, like most female sports (except water sports and tennis), are truly laughable.

I MUST admit however, that women have progressed to the point that a good college basketball team could probably go 50/50 against the typical boys high school team. Progress is being made!

Boehner is not interested in working to improve America.

John looks and sounds terrible. And very telling that a leading politician is so focused on golf when Rome is burning. Pathetic.

He looks like he is also focused on a carton of cigarettes a day and a case of scotch.

Mr. Vice-President, you, Sir, are a lovable lunk, but standing there next to that robust boehner, you graphically illustrate the fact that you are both just a couple of gawddamned politicians ....

Oh He has and probably does,Repubs actually get a chance to drive some bills for the first time in at least 4 years, you should break out of the liberal bubble and ditch those talking points your media feeds you.

Didn't they run on a jobs platform last year? If so, where is the bill? They've been in power since January and have yet to produce any substantive jobs legislation. Instead, they've held the people of this country hostage over their political ideology...they're nothing more than overpaid grifters...maybe if you quit listening to Faux Noize and blab radio, your perspective on this issue would have some merit...

Nice to see Boehner turned the conversation from what he has no interest in - jobs for the American people - to what he has much interest in - his golf game.

Not that I like Boehner, but it looked to me like they both started talking at the same time...Biden about the amount of work they have to do, and Boehner about his golf weekend. Biden just deferred to Boehner and let him continue talking. It didn't look like a big deal to me.

But trolls are saying:

DEMS CAVE AGAIN!

John not interested in getting things done. He doesn't care about the unemployed or the deficit. He cares about seats. Period.
He figures and he is probably right that if his party can obstruct economic progress then the attention deficit American voter will just assume its poor governing from Obama. A very cynical approach to politics but Republicans have mastered it.

cut-cap and balance was a good way to get us back on track but the demos would rather play the game thier good at..demonizing the right instead of actually trying to work with them.

You cant work with these people. Cut cap and balance was a phony attempt to automatically cut retirement funding for deficit control while making any attempt to raise revenue require a 2/3rd's of the senate vote. The problem is when you say "work with" the republicans what you really mean is give them 100% of what they want and ignore your own constituency. Sorry bagger. Obama got 70 million votes in 08 and the GOP got just 44 million in 2010. I'd say Obama speaks for the American people and he will represent our interest as such. If you want right wing corporatism to rule then elect Perry or Romney. I doubt America will let you do that..
