Saturn In Front Of The Sun: Cassini Spacecraft Captures Breathtaking View Of Ringed Planet (PHOTO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/09/11 02:58 PM ET   Updated: 11/09/11 05:12 AM ET

This is a photo of Saturn, not an artist's futuristic sci-fi rendition.

NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which continues to orbit Saturn, captured this picture in 2006 as it floated in the planet's shadow for about 12 hours. The sun illuminates the giant gas mass from behind, giving it a semi-transparent look. Perhaps most stunning is the view of the planet's rings, which appear to glow in the light.

According to NASA, the photo helped scientists discover rings they didn't know existed:

Saturn's rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the image. Seen in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn's E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, at the left, just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth.

The photo was recently featured here, as NASA's "Astronomy Picture of the Day."

During Cassini's time orbiting Saturn, it has captured some stunning shots of the planet. Notably, Cassini sent back pictures and data on a storm that measured aproximately eight times the size of Earth.

Exquisite! Breathtaking! Isn't it exciting to know that someday, we'll have the opportunity to trash the surface of Saturn too?!

Kudos to all the science geeks who made the pics from Cassini possible. Beautiful pics.

This picture is stunning, but it's been around for a few years now, they have another version of this picture where they pinpoint earth's location as it is "cradled" in the rings of saturn.

Cassini also gave some amazing pictures of Enceladus and the water shooting out of it. As well as the Huygens probe which landed on Titan.

NASA's recent picture of the day was taken in 2006? Did they have 5 years worth of better stuff prior to this?

Some of the newer pictures are too mind-blowing to be released to the general public.....would cause major panic & upheaval in the country.....you know..... questioning the authority of religion and High School Principals; Democrats & Republicans actually working together for the best of the country; dogs sleeping with cats.....the whole nine yards.

I always found that amusing...According to the bagger party any image from space is photoshopped but Jeebus face in a grilled cheese sammich...that's gotta be the real deal.

I guess you don't understand the idea of Boldly Going Were No One Has Gone Before? It would make more sence doing more of that than just having unending war and blowing stuff up and killing people.

Obama only seems God-like in comparison to the GOP line-up and the previous president.
12:54 PM on 09/12/2011
That's inappropriate. There might be kids reading here. Saturn and its rings naturally emerged and are real, not magical. No gods were involved in their making. Just one day after the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and already these people are spreading religious thinking again. God fans really have no shame.

When Rick Perry saw this, he stopped smashing the skeleton of some random mammal into pieces, and hurled a bleached thigh bone up into the air in a rage.

Actually when he saw this he first took time to look coiffed and well attired, he made sure the his mastodon bone buttons matched his nose ring and stone studded bear skin sandals.. then he had one of his ever-present "manly" assistants smash the skeletons and, though he did hurl the thigh bone "from a very male" beast into the air - first he licked and kissed it for manly good luck - and he did it with such style....
