Zooey Deschanel has never been afraid to speak candidly, as she did as a 17-year-old in a strongly worded letter to Vogue (a sample: "Why would you want to limit the spectrum of beauty to an "ideal" when you, as a popular women's magazine, have the opportunity to expand it?")
So when Deschanel says sweetly naive things like, "I wish everyone looked like a kitten," you better believe that she actually means it.
In this week's New York, Zooey shows that she really is as adorable as she seems -- and actually does talk about kittens, cupcakes and other girly things with total sincerity.
She also wears fab Fifties and Sixties-inspired dresses with no irony and clings to black tights for dear life. Her clothing routine is safe, comforting and low-maintenance... until it's not. Jada Yuan writes in New York:
She had to call on her stylist for emergency help, she explains. "I only found out last minute there were going to be cameras. I was going to wear this old dress I've worn to, like, eight events. Do you think this one is a little too ... sexy?" she pronounces it "sax-eee" and screws her face up into an exaggerated Lucille Ball expression of dread, as if she's uncomfortable with the word even leaving her mouth.
Which makes sense, given that Deschanel's outfit choices (such as this Moschino ensemble) can be described as stylish, cute, whimsical and retro... but rarely "sexy."
But the accompany photo shoot for New York, featuring the "The New Girl" actress in a thin gray tank, seem to hint at a sexier Zooey than we previously knew.
