Obama Weekly Address: President Calls For Unity On 9/11 Anniversary

Barack Obama

ERICA WERNER   09/10/11 08:03 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Summoning the nation to unity and service, President Barack Obama paid tribute to America's resilience and the sacrifice of its war dead Saturday as the country prepared to mark 10 long years since the horrors of 9/11.

A day before the anniversary commemorations, the president made a pilgrimage to Arlington National Cemetery, strolling with his wife, Michelle, among graves filled with dead from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. And he invoked the common purpose that arose from carnage a decade ago in telling Americans that the nation cannot be broken by terrorism "no matter what comes our way."

Obama also visited a soup kitchen, where he and his family helped prepare trays of gumbo for the needy in the nation's capital, underscoring the call to national service that rang so loudly after the terrorist attacks.

All this as the president and his national security team tracked the latest possible terrorist threat against the country, a tip that al-Qaida might be seeking to detonate a car bomb in New York or Washington. Obama met his senior national security team in the morning to review the latest developments and ensure the nation remains on a heightened state of vigilance during the anniversary commemorations. As of Saturday U.S. intelligence agencies had not found evidence that al-Qaida had sneaked any terrorists into the country to carry out an anniversary attack.

At D.C. Central Kitchen, Obama said projects to serve the community "are part of what the spirit of remembering 9/11's all about – the country being unified and looking out for one another."

In an email to supporters, the president urged others to follow his lead. "With just a small act of service, or a simple act of kindness towards others, you can both honor those we lost and those who serve us still, and help us recapture the spirit of generosity and compassion that followed 9/11," the president wrote.

Earlier, at Arlington, he and his wife held hands with each other and hugged other visitors among rows of white tombstones from the long wars that Obama is winding down after more than 6,000 American troop deaths.

"It's a reminder that our way of life is dependent on the incredible courage, the incredible patriotism of a whole host of people from all across the country, every walk of life, every ethnicity, every religion," the president said in an interview with NBC Nightly News broadcast later Saturday. "It's a somber moment when you think about all these young people who gave their lives so young."

Obama, a little-known state senator in Illinois at the time of the attacks, now has the responsibility to help lead the nation in remembrance of a trauma 10 years on. On Sunday, the president is scheduled to visit all three sites where hijacked planes struck – New York City, Shanksville, Pa., and the Pentagon – before delivering evening remarks at a memorial event at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama sought a balance between remembering the attacks and the nearly 3,000 people who died, and moving forward. He thanked troops who have served in the post-Sept. 11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and praised the military successes that led to advances against al-Qaida and the killing of the group's leader, Osama bin Laden.

"A decade after 9/11, it's clear for all the world to see – the terrorists who attacked us that September morning are no match for the character of our people, the resilience of our nation, or the endurance of our values," the president said.

"They wanted to terrorize us, but, as Americans, we refuse to live in fear. Yes we face a determined foe, and make no mistake – they will keep trying to hit us again. But as we are showing again this weekend, we remain vigilant. We're doing everything in our power to protect our people. And no matter what comes our way, as a resilient nation, we will carry on."

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who gave the weekly Republican address, said the terrorists achieved their goal of killing Americans, but failed to destroy the American spirit.

"The country was not broken, but rather, it was more united in the days after Sept. 11 than at any time in my lifetime," Giuliani said.

Without mentioning Obama by name, Giuliani also used his address to criticize the administration's policies, saying that America is safer, but not as safe as it should be. "Perhaps the most dangerous impulse we've developed since Sept. 11 is impatience demonstrated by the calls to put our armed forces on timetables," Giuliani said.

Leave it to a repud to spoil the unified feeling with partisan political bs. Giuliani the country IS safer, we don't have a warmongering hack at the helm anymore, we have a gifted man who had the guts to do the job your side let slide. Even on a day like 9/11, 10 years later, the repuds can't help but stir up more divisiveness with their jealousy and lack of class!

Thank you, Ghouliani, for a political attack, some good ole fear-mongering and wanting to spend, spend on wars--we are broke, remember?

If we are a resilient nation, let's clear the boards of the 9/11 "stories" and get something else.

All I ask...."AM I BETTER OFF THAN 2009? NOOOOO. I lost my job in 2010. Obama's watch. I am hurting and I blame Obama. Go on your great vacations Michelle. I hate reading about you and seeing your scowling smile.

Well I AM better off under Obama than I was under Bush. Sucks for you, though.

The Republican Party would suggest that you pull yourself up by your bootstraps and quit whining, no matter who is in the White House. So. Leave Obama out of it and get on with your life.

This is sad! Hate, racism, prejudice, anger and pain! This is America the greatest country STILL! This is still the land of rights and free speak in spite of K--- brothers and others who are attempting to hijack our freedoms. This is America remember why our flag has never stopped waving, its because of the things the President said when he said this nation would rest easier knowing that no matter what else comes the evil that brought 9/11 is gone! This is America be an American not a Republican, Democrat, TeaPartier, AN AMERICAN if you remember what that means!

The dust hadn't settled from 9-11 before the Liberal Democrats began their continuous vicious attacks on the Bush Administration. The New York Times printed articles that were untrue, but did print small retractions in fine print on back page later.

LOL...Who'd expect a liberal to be trust-worthy?

Once he took office, Obama had to face some realities about national security. It is economic realities that he can't face.

Well, considering the month he started we lost 820,000 jobs and that he has created 2.4 million since; more than twice in his 2.5 years than Bush did in 8, he's faced them rather well.

Oh, yes, those states sucked up the money- look how that Governors like Perry used the Stimulus to balance their budgets while railing against the money. Daniels even had a website about what the Stimulus was doing for the State until the GOP position was to oppose the money.

The latest poles and research finds that Repubs, (conservatives) donate two to three times more than Dems; maybe you could go out and live by your own standards. Don't let your idiology get in the way of your commmon sense, logic, or whatever your using to try and make a point. Really !

Those "poles" you refer to were taken two years ago. If you feel that this is the latest word on charitable giving; so be it.
Charitable giving is hard to quantify; so I don't understand how a "pole" can have any real reflection of reality.
This is one subject that's too hard pin down by a poll.

I noticed the comments of hatred and people responding to these hateful remarks. Hatred is a disease that takes the mind, body and soul of these people. Let them wallow in that dark place and do not lower yourself to their level by responding.

When Pearl Harbor was attacked the Country was galvanized. The unemployment went from 13.3% to 1.9%. That was a real show of call to action.

The day before 9/11 the unemployment rate was 4.2%. Today it's 9.1%. That does not reflect a call to action, only the reverse.

Payday for the Rich and Memories of the tragedy for everyone else, of "the way we were".
06:28 PM on 09/11/2011
Excellent point, with two very big differences. Pearl Harbor marked the turning point where the US had no choice but to get in the war and fight. It was also the spark that kicked off factory production for the war apparatus that WE NEEDED rather than making and selling them to the allies and whomever. We were in it chest deep at that point.

Can we do it today? Not a chance in my books. First off, a war of that magnitude today will be nothing short of an apocalypse. As for cranking up factory production of war machinery - you'd better find a factory capable first off. Then you'd better find out if it has simply been mothballed, or was it abandoned and demolished, never to run again. The US has spent itself pandering to special interest groups (one in particular) that have all but rendered this country defenseless in the event that we need to get the war machine going. Perhaps we can contract with China to produce the stuff for us. Hey, GE is over there making jet engines. They are one of us - aren't they?

There will never be unity, as long as people(and you know who you are) hold on to their hatred, racism, predjudice, divisiveness ideas and thoughts, and because you refuse to let go of these putrid, sad, and pathetic ideas, you are no better than the people who were responsible for the 9-11 tragedy, the only difference is you have not acted on your hatred. Some may think this is a bit extreme, but think about it, those people acted out because hatred was their driving force. We as Americans are and can be so much better than that, if the hate is allowed to be replaced with love for fellow man, no matter, creed, color, religion. Today is a day to reflect, and be aware of what the destruction hatred is capable of creating. We are all human beings, children of God, let us unite today and forever to conquer hate, not one another. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
