Remembering 9/11
by conversationwithnoam
Dear Prof. Chomsky,

Today is the tenth anniversary of September 11th. I remember being woken by a call from my mother. In a panic she screamed, “We have been attacked!” We watched the second plane crash together. It was horrendous. We didn’t know anyone who died that day, being a native Texan, New York seems so far away, but it devastated my mother and I. My entire city was in ‘shock and disbelief’, companies in downtown Houston released employees from work and evacuated office buildings, I didn’t go to school that day. When I did return to class, I asked my teacher how she was doing, she started crying.

It was days before I heard any laughter. I spent most of that time watching continuous news coverage, flipping the channel when the on-air personality began to irritate me. I was glad when SNL returned for their first show after the national tragedy. The country needed to hear a joke.

We also needed answers.

I am particularly moved by those memorials displayed in France and Japan. To all of those people and countries that marked this date, i am most grateful.

Thank you all the countries that did a tribute for 9/11. Best allies anyone could have.

When wil the US start commemorating the 100,000 (say it aloud: hun-dred thou-sand) Iraqi deaths? Untill then, please stop picking nits on flag protocoll when others commemorate 3,000 (three thou-sand) US deaths.

wow, I never thought I'd see the day where my fellow Americans would dishonor themselves and their country by not honoring innocent lives lost.

I don't want to read the negative comments, so I won't. Personally, I am touched and heartwarmed by the show of rememberence from these countries. I did not expect that kind of compassion from the rest of the world. Thank you to all countries who showed their respects to the USA.

As an American, I am embarrassed and ashamed of the comments here complaining about these tributes. No wonder most of the world thinks we're a bunch of jerks.

the world thinks we are a bunch of jerks because we kill people, invade counties illegally, and think we are above the law.

Amazing how so many Americans in these comments cannot seem to accept what an honor it was for all of these countries to pay their respect to our country on 9/11 - something of which they DO NOT have to do each anniversary but choose to do so. The flag is on the ground? SO WHAT. Do any of you know to properly display a flag from other countries in respect for their lost loved ones? Of course you don't. The only "ungrateful" country I see is this one.

The French are standing on our flag. Is it because Obama went over there shortly after his election and bashed us. He mentioned how arrogant we were while ignoring the U.S. cemetery full of crosses of our men who died while saving that ungrateful nation.

People from 90 countries died in the attacks. They were WORLD trade centers. Its a tragedy for those who lost loved ones, but the real NATIONAL tragedy was the reaction of the Bush government.

The alternative would have been the reaction of the... Gore government? I can't stop shuddering.

09:50 AM on 09/12/2011

I personally dislike the Truther and Inside Job memes, not because they do not raise some interesting questions, but because they raise more questions than they evidencarilly answer and more importantly, obscure the indisputable fact that this happened on the Bush/Cheney watch. Never mind the implicit questions raised by the fact that they so shamelessly exploited this tragic event to enabled them to mislead the country into two ruinously costly and deficit creating wars.

The simple fact that this occurred on their watch should have been enough in itself to bring down their regime in the 2004 election. They were able to deflect this well diserved anger into hatred of Iraq and compound the long term misery of the event.

The remembrance of 9/11 is closely entwined with the ensuing war-hype which, tragically, precluded any normal healing / mourning process. Now Americans are seemingly forever stuck in self-pity and victimhood, with an unbelievable blind spot for the 100,000 deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. How can you commemorate 3,000 US deaths without thinking of the 100,000 the USA caused later? That's just sickening.

Not all Americans are playing it up. Some heeded the warning, and woke up on 9/11. Those of whom you speak are still extremely confused, wallowing in hatred and flailing about in fear. And they're getting left behind. :)
