GLENDALE, Ariz. — Cam Newton's NFL debut was as magnificent as they come, except for the outcome.

Instead, another rookie scored the game winner.

Patrick Peterson made amends for a long afternoon at cornerback with an 89-yard punt return for the go-ahead touchdown and the Arizona Cardinals escaped with a 28-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Newton, the No. 1 draft pick playing on the same field where he led Auburn to the BCS championship in January, completed 24 of 37 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, the first rookie to throw for more than 400 yards in his NFL opener.

The Panthers had first down at the Arizona 11 late in the game, and even got an extra down on an offside call, but failed to score. Steve Smith, who wore red-white-and-blue gloves and cleats, had eight catches for 178 yards for Carolina, including touchdown plays of 77 and 26 yards.

Kevin Kolb was 18 of 27 for 309 yards and two touchdowns in his first game for Arizona. Peterson, the fifth overall pick victimized by Smith most of the afternoon, hauled in the punt and broke a tackle and darted downfield on the long run but almost paid dearly for a showboat move at the finish.

He began to strut, not realizing Carolina's Mike Goodson was gaining on him. Peterson glanced around, realized the error of his ways, and sprinted away, diving over the goal line to put Arizona ahead 28-21 with 7:15 to play.

With the help of a roughing-the-passer penalty against Clark Haggans, the Panthers drove downfield and had first down at the 11. Four consecutive passes were incomplete, but an offside penalty on fourth down moved the ball to the Arizona 5 and gave Carolina one more chance. Newton threw over the middle to Goodson to the 2, but he was a yard shy of the first down and the Cardinals ran out the clock.

Both of Newton's TD passes came in the first half as Carolina took a 14-7 lead at the break.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, drove inside the Carolina 6 twice in the second quarter and came away with nothing.

On second-and-goal from the 4, Beanie Wells, who rushed for 90 yards on 18 carries including a 7-yard touchdown run, muffed a pitch from Kolb and Carolina's Thomas Davis recovered.

After forcing a punt, Arizona drove to the Panthers 5, but a crackback block penalty against Andre Roberts drove the team back, and Jay Feely's 36-yard field goal try was wide left. Feely was 14-for-14 from inside the 40 a year ago.

The Panthers took over at their 36 with 1:03 to play in the half. Daryl Washington intercepted Newton's pass over the middle, but the play was nullified by a roughing-the-passer penalty against Peterson.

Moments later, Smith beat Peterson in the corner of the end zone and Newton lofted the ball perfectly in place to give Carolina the lead in front of the stunned crowd.

Arizona went 54 yards in six plays on its first possession, with Wells scoring on the 7-yard run.

After the subsequent kickoff, the Panthers had a third-and-7 from their 23 when new defensive coordinator Ray Horton called a blitz.

In a mix up in the secondary, Smith was at least 20 yards behind the nearest defender, safety Kerry Rhodes. The Panthers' star receiver ran untouched to the end zone to tie it at 7-7 with 7:11 left in the opening quarter.

Kolb's pass under duress to wide open tight end Jeff King for 48 yards and a touchdown tied it at 14-14, but Carolina took the kickoff and went 80 yards in eight plays to take a 21-14 lead, Newton leaping over the line for the score. His air-guitar strum of the football in celebration drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Kolb found Early Doucet over the middle and the receiver broke a tackle then dashed 70 yards for the tying score with 10:48 to play.

If Cams really is as good as it seems he is, I think it's time to start thinking about redesigning the divisions... All teams in NFC South are excellent, and as a Saints fan I think Brees could use some rest. Move Tampa to the NFC West and bring in the Cardinals or some crappy franchise in the AFC. It's just not fair! :D

Let's get real, If Tebow had put up these numbers, there would be tons of press. I guess this is just the difference between BLACK AND WHITE.

Very impressive performance, but the yards are a bit inflated due to Arizona's terrible secondary play. I DVRed the game (Cardinals fan) and rewatched it. Tons of blown coverages and mental lapses in the secondary.

Great (and unexpected) performance from Cam. I'm curious to see how he plays against better secondaries.

Definitely proved me wrong. I wasn't a hater, but I thought he'd have his struggles (mostly due to the new system/coach/complexity of an NFL offense).

I expected this to be the leading headline for HP and all other sports sites. Cam Newton is the player I am most intersted in following this season. I loved watching him last year (never followed Auburn before) and it looks like he won't disappoint. Come on. He broke all records in his rookie debut, and nobody wants to talk about it? Why is that?

Only 24 comments? I could only imagine all of the haters on here chomping at the bit if he had flopped. Little known fact--Cam Newton's brother and father played in the NFL. Any other time "experts" would be touting his "NFL-pedigree". Funny how the media tried to present him as just another running QB that probably couldn't "grasp the playbook"...haters!!!

I didn't know Cam's dad played NFL ball. Very interesting.

Yea he played Strong Safety for the Cowboys for 2 seasons

If Cam threw for three INTs and had 80 passing yards this board would have to be closed down due to overflow bandwidth traffic.

I hope he keeps this up so the haters can continue to be silenced. I can't recall the exact article from a month or so ago, but the comments were filled with ignorant posts. I realize it's early, and as a rookie he will undoubtedly have his stumbles. However, this guy is a proven winner at every level, a monster athlete, and to top it off he seems to possess the necessary leadership skills to take this team to the top for years to come. As a Panther's fan from day one, I cannot be more excited. Even though we lost, I think I saw more legit highlights in that one game than all of last season combine. I'll go out on a limb and say we'll have a winning record this year, in spite of all the commentators' predictions. I also see a division title next season (barring major injuries, of course). Go Panthers!

I don't know about a winning record this year, but next year watch out for the Panthers! Cam didn't even get a full offseason with the lockout, next year I say Playoffs! Go Panthers!!!:)

Might be a little early - but if this game is any indication, the future looks bright in Carolina.

Cam Newton is awesome! He's proved he has a great career ahead of him as an NFL quarterback. The Panthers could have kept that final drive alive if the receiver had taken just one step further toward the goal line. I'm very optimistic about the Panthers chances to have a winning season.

Cam looked very good and hope he stays healthy, because this defense is going to give up a lot of points, so, he will be passing more than neccessary and with the strain of the NFL season let's hope he gets through without injury. Good job.

Ja Marcus Russell played well in a few games too. I agree. I'm all LSU where he's from. But 1 things about it. Look at all QBs that have Quaterbacked in Oakland. Insult everyone of them. CAM is in the NFC SOUTH a Division with teams that play well together. Not individual all alone. But hats off to Patrick Peterson on the 89 yd Punt Return for that TD that ended up being the winning points of that game. Don't insult either SEC Player. The #1 & #5 overall picks of the 2011 NFL Draft. Picked up by 2 NFC teams.

It's too damn bad that Ja Marcus went to the Raiders.

I think he could have been a very good QB with the right team.

Maybe Cam will get the help he needs to mature where he is.

Who knows???

He damn sure ain't JaWalrus Russell.
