Cyndi Lauper Flubs National Anthem At U.S. Open (VIDEO)

Cyndi Lauper

Earlier this year, Christina Aguilera infamously flubbed the lyrics of the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and now Cyndi Lauper did the same at the U.S. Open in New York.

The iconic singer took to the microphone Saturday night after a moment of silence in honor of 9/11, but got the lyrics of "The Star-Spangled Banner" a bit mixed up.

“O’er the ramparts, we watched as our flag was still streaming,” Lauper sang, when the line is, “O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming.”

Lauper sang before the semifinal match between Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, in which Williams won.

Watch a video of Lauper's not-quite-right anthem below.

OK, Cyndi mixed up 2 words - and feels bad about it. Why does that justify these vicious personal attacks? So she is in her late 50's ? She looks good and frankly has never been associated with substance abuse or bad personal behavior.

And btw, a has-been is not someone who was a massive recording star in the 80's, an MTV music video pioneer and had the #1 selling BLUES album (and a grammy nom) in 2010 - 26 years after her award for best new artist. I guess that may be why she was invited to sing the national anthem.

This happens time after time...

Not to those who "practice" it just like ANY other song.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

They think they can do it off the cuff --- then the nerves hit & they FLAKE OUT.

Hey, girls just want to have fun, and that's about it... This is unacceptable from anyone given the privilege; especially from a so-called/self-proclaimed "Professional."

The fact is everyone is so upset shen someone makes an INNOCENT mistake but NOONE gets upset by people putting their own personal flair on the national anthem! This song IS a national anthem and SHOULD be sang as it was written. If you want to add flair to the song DO NOT SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM! I have no problem with adding their own flair to America, The Beautiful or My Country Tis Of Thee at all, but STOP STOMPING ALL OVER THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AND SING IT THE WAY IT IS WRITTEN!

The problem with a LIVE performance is there is no do-over. I think the singers they get to sing the "National Anthem" all believe they know it (we've all sung that song) and don't have to practice. Memory can be a tricky thing, so it's safer to practice in private so one can sing flawlessly in public.

That's EXACTLY what I said.

That could be the case. But sometimes, no matter how much you practice, you can still forget. Brain f@rts happen...to EVERYbody.

It is very sad. She used to be hot and now she is just an old bag. Women don't seem to hold up very well after their 30's.

Can't believe some of these comments. So the lady messed up ONE line of the song. She IS human. No performer is perfect...heck, no PERSON is perfect.

No "excuse" is required. She messed up. We all do. She didn't murder anyone, she didn't even purposely disrespect the song (think Roseanne Barr's performance). She made a MISTAKE. There's no reason to crucify her, insult her, or even be upset with her, IMO.

Do kids still have to sing the National Song at school or start their morning with the Pledge?
So many people don't know the words to our Country's song. Didn't someone else recently sing the song wrong too. Christina? Not good....just not good..

I remember learning all the different Military songs...Memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution, Gettesburg Address. Paying honor to the unity of our Country, to me, is
so very important..To instill pride and honor in our kids while they are kids helps strengthen the bond of our relationship with each other and our Country..IMHO..peace
